Does this have something to do with the lottery?  If not, it should be a blog topic.

                  Good point Todd.

It does stretch the imagination of the lottery discussion forum by lack of context.

The only context I can think of is the dream sold by lotteries to step aside of the Rat Race.

You have my vote to remove it (the thread). Thanks for the question, and keeping things in order here.

A rat race is a fierce competition to maintain or improve one's position in the workplace or social life. This term presumably alludes to the rat's desperate struggle for survival.

The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.

Life Is A Perception Of Your Own Reality: Change Your Perception, Change Your Life!

Ancient Toltecs realized two things First, the reality you perceive is something you learned, not necessarily what is. Second, by simply changing your perception, you can change your life in amazing ways, and empower yourself.

A rat race is a term used for an endless, self-defeating or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape whilst running around a maze or in a wheel. In an analogy to the modern city, many rats in a single maze expend a lot of effort running around, but ultimately achieve nothing (meaningful) either collectively or individually.

The rat race is a term often used to describe work, particularly excessive work; in general terms, if one works too much, one is in the rat race. This terminology contains implications that many people see work as a seemingly endless pursuit with little reward or purpose. Not all workers feel like this. It is the perceived Conventional Wisdom, for example, that those who work for themselves are generally happier at work.

The increased image of work as a "rat race" in modern times has led many to question their own attitudes to work and seek a better alternative; a more harmonious Work-life balance. Many believe that long work hours, unpaid overtime, stressful jobs, time spent commuting, less time for family life and/or friends life, has led to a generally unhappier workforce/population  unable to enjoy the benefits of increased economic prosperity and a higher standard of living.

Escaping the rat race can have a number of different meanings:

A description of the movement, of either the Home or Work Location, of previously City Dwellers or Workers to more rural  locations, possibly beyond the "urban growth boundary".

Retirement in general or no longer needing / having to work (Winning a Jackpot Lottery).

Moving from a high pressure job to a less intense role either at a different company or within the same company at an alternative location or department.

Changing to a different job that does not involve working 9 to 6 and a long commute.
                    Working from home.

Becoming financially independent from an employer.

A mind once stretched by a new idea never returns to its original dimensions!

I'd say the poll has to do a lot with lottery. Don't most people play because they're trying to get out of the rat race, hoping to hit a jackpot?

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

                      Lep

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

I'm 24, in graduate school, and living off my dad's money while in college (I don't have an assistantship). However, I will start making my own money this fall when I start teaching.

Today's winning 3-ball is going to be a number between 000 and 999.

In a lot of states, lotteries benefit education. That makes the REAL winners the only people who can't play!

Good points, the thread seems to have waxed philosophical and I enjoy the perspectives.  The rat race is about self preservation. Good or bad, it's a fact we all think and act that way to a degree.

I think I will change my view as one who despises all the trappings of a complex world to Resistance is Futile: Just when you think your out, they drag you back in.

Quality of life and living is important to most everyone. That can mean different things to each one's perspective. I think the lottery sells the dream (the sizzle) and the possibility that a new quality of life is available and attainable. People need hope, that's why they fall for scams, ponzi schemes and get rich plans. That is why against enormous odds many play the lottery. It gives them hope for a new quality of living, a Utopian dream.. Everybody needs hope of some kind and action toward that hope produces results. You gotta play to win. Resistance is futile.

Now excuse me while I look for some cheese,...
