Submitted for your approval:   Your boss has multiple businesses and among them is a store with a lottery terminal and scratch-offs.  He gets the state commission on every sale so it's like paying 95 cents for every dollar in tickets he can give out instead of cash.

Stipulated:  You can select your own numbers or choice of scratch-off.

How many lottery tickets would you accept as a percentage of your pay?

My household bills come first, and you never know whats going to happen , so i'd have to say , if i was going to be paid in lottery tickets it would maybe be 5 dollars.

I voted none, because if he is going to do this:

He gets the state commission on every sale so it's like paying 95 cents for every dollar in tickets he can give out instead of cash. "

In essence every ticket used as pay has cut that dollar of wages by 5%.

What is he going to do next?

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

I would go along with sully and get maybe 5 bucks worth once in a while just for the "you never know" factor. It just might be that little thing that throws a monkey wrench into the curses that so many of my ex-wives have put on me.

I would also say none. I work for money so I can pay bills, buy food and help take care of my family. I always buy lottery tickets anyways, but I don't want to be paid with them.

Since the average overall odds of a lottery ticket being of any value are 1:50, it would be like getting $50 of worthless paper with him getting a 5% commission or $2.50 for getting you to take it, so I would say none.  Lottery tickets represent a gamble and a dream and I can't pay my bills with that.

It would appear that the answer to this question is coming down along the lines of whether you like your boss or not.

It would seem to me that if you like your boss or are ambivalent that it wouldn't make any difference whether he gets the profit or Sahib down at the convenient store.

Unless the situation is one of being locked into something and not being able to change your mind should financial obligations change - that's different.

That's why I said 5 bucks once in a while would be fine with me because I'm going to buy that much anyway and more.

When you start doing that "every now and then", you open a door that you might want to keep closed.  What happens when he insists that you accept 25% of your wages in tickets?  If you don't ever start it, you don't have to stop it.  It has nothing to do with liking him or not.  It is not your job to help him to "manage" HIS money.  If he can't pay regular wages then he  needs to close the doors.
