Oh, I didn't mean to sound ungrateful to the lottery gods! ;) I was happy to cash in that sucker of course.
But normally a $2 Scratcher game has top prizes in the range of $10,000 to $20,000 or so, and only around 25-50 of them. This Hot 500 game is very unusual prize odds in that it has over 9000 top prizes of $500 each instead. So with this game, you have a decent chance of hitting the top prize.
Normally I only play $5 Scratchers, the top scratch card in CA, but made an exception for this one, just to go for a top prize. And I hit it well before I spent the amount of the top prize, so I can walk away from this game net positive, that is always nice.
This Seems like tough odds to beat for that scratchoff game when you compare it to the Pick 3 game.
Put $1 Straight on ANY pick 3 number and your odds of a straight hit and $500.00 payout will be 1 in 1,000 which are easier odds to beat than 1 in 1,622. In addition you are also spending $1 instead of $2.
Put $2 straight on the same number and increase your prize payout to $1,000 with the same 1 in 1,000 odds. So the top prize for spending $2 in pick 3 is $1,000 with only 1 in 1,000 odds of a straight hit, while your top prize for spending $2 on this scratchoff is half that amount at only $500.00 with more difficult odds of 1 in 1,622.
SO Basically if trying to win a $500.00 prize you'd have a better chance of buying a Pick 3 number for $1 straight, than you would of buying one of the Hot 500 scratchoff games.
You would also have a better chance of winning a $50 prize in Pick 3 or Pick 4 than you would of winning $50 in the Hot 500 scratchoff game. Play a Front pair or back Pair for only $1 in either pick 3 or pick 4 and your odds of hitting that front pair or back pair & getting a $50 payout are only 1 in 100 since there are only 100 front pairs and 100 different back pairs to choose from ( 00 - 99 ). Again better odds of winning for less money as the odds of winning $50 in the Hot 500 scratchoff game are 1 in 320 compared to the 1 in 100 odds you have of hitting a front pair or back pair in pick 3 or pick 4 and winning the same $50.

Scratchers have better return than pick 3, at least here in CA.
I've plopped down several hundred on pick 3 and got nada, zip, squat. Here in CA we only have straight and box, no other prize options which makes it harder. With Scratchers, you always get some money back on the many lower prize options with some degree of regularity, and on this game I only spent a few hundred and got $500 and more.
If you keep playing pick 3 thousands of times over and over again, your return with average out to a little over 50%.
You play scratchers over and over again, and your return is more like 60-70%.
Taking all the other prize options and overall odds into consideration, you have a lower house edge on Scratchers. Plus most Scratchers, unlike this one, have big top prizes way above and beyond pick 3 $500 or $600 amount to sweeten the deal.

Nice Wins! Congrats on hitting two consecutive days
Also be sure to try 227 in NC! Usually the doubles will drop down when the Triples are drawn close together and I know the Triple 222 and 777 were drawn close together in NC Earlier this year. THat makes two double combos a good bet, 772 and 227.
Thanks NYSlugger! make that 3 wins in 3 days now.......hope I can keep it up!...congrats to you on your great scratch win!
NC had 179 today & so did I...got it for $80...it's a long lost pet so should have kept it in the way I've been playing it but was expecting something else today...thought I had it 50/50 but forgot it.

You are welcome. I wish you continued success at hitting the numbers!
Congrats on hitting a number 3 days in a row now!
It's ok You didn't get it for 50/50 or straight a win is a win boxed or straight! I'd trade $1 for $80 anyday!
I actually didnt have the Big scratch Win, that was Jon D who hit for $500.00 off a $2 card. My win was the 164 straight for the May 2nd Evening Draw in NY!

MattfromPA congrats on your $100.00 win from the $5 scratchoff game!
THRIFTY congrats on your 2nd Prize win in Pick from from the June 23, 2010 Take Five Drawing in New York!
( one question THRIFTY was that 4 out of 5 win on a Quick Pick or did you select the numbers yourself? If it was quick pick I might consider playing a few Take 5 Quickpicks Myself. I've done it a few times and the computer selected 3 of the 5 winning numbers for me once so I had won about $24.00 However the quickpick has never gave me 4 of 5 or 5 of 5 .)

I caught "4567" .50 cents boxed twice for a $200.00 win!
It hit tonight in New York as "4657"(5/07/11 Evening). Scratchoff ticket in the background is NOT mine I took this pic inside the store on the counter. Most of the times after I cash a ticket they say I cant keep the copy of the ticket because they need it as proof that someone won and thats why a specific amount of money has been subtracted from the register or something like that. I'd rather keep my winning copy of my tickets but it's whatever.I'm satisfied with the win and will put the money towards some pick 3 triples. The triples are way overdue to hit in New York
