When I went out to cash my $30,000 ticket, they said they only tax $601 & up.   They took the highest bracket tax cut & then gave me a check. The next year, I had to file my winnings & got $5,000 back because I wasn't working that year, lol.

When/what game did you win 30K?  Was it a qp?  Where did you buy it??

That was on May 24, 1994. That's what 594 on my username is about. I hit the jackpot with F5. At that time, they only had 26 balls for a short period of time. They were getting too many winners so they jack that up to 36 balls.

Your mom is correct. But, in order to use your losing lottery tickets against your winnings, you have to itemize your deductions.

Most people without a home mortgage or business, don't itemize.

Yes, I got a W-2G form. I have all my losing tickets to claim against the winnings.

No, you don't need to itemize.  That is a myth.  Just use the same Schedule form for the itemized deductions, and there is a line for gambling winnings/losses.  If you can show enough losses to equal your winnings, you do not owe tax on your winnings.   I did that several years ago from my casino winnings.

Somebody's gonna win tonight  I Agree!
