CALIFORNIA LOTTERY

So today i decided to be crazy and buy a whole book of 2$ scratchers. there are 100 scratchers to a book.

Normally, I buy 10-20 at a time and make out either doubling or tripling my money.

So I buy the book and start...this is where it gets misleading: on the back of each scratcher it tells you the odds: odds of winning ANY prize: 1:4.33

odds of winning a CASH prize: 1: 7.62

So technically every 5-6th one should be a winning ticket and every 8-9th one, should be a cash prize, correct?

WRONG.

I went through 17 straight tickets then hit a free ticket. I went through the next 11 and 4.00...out of the 200 I spent, I won 90 dollars..only 1 ticket was 20.00, 1 ticket was 10.00 the rest were 4$ and free tickets.

Out of 100 tickets, there were no 3X's , no top prizes, not even a 50$ prize.

So I took the 90 bucks, and decided to play the 5$ scratchers, why not?

I went through 9 and got...FREE TICKET...the rest were losers. odds on the 5$ ticket were 1:3.35 for ANY prize and 1: 5.37 for a cash prize.

So my question is, is this misleading? False advertising thinking the player will win at least a free ticket out of every 5-6 they buy...I saved all of my losing tickets and they are all still connected, so I have proof to show them, just curious if anyone has ever sued the lottery over these circumstances and actually had a case?

The odds on the tickets applies to all the tickets printed for that game, you just had a sampling of 100 tickets which doesn't represent the distribution of prizes for the thousands of tickets printed.

     * you don't need to buy more tickets, just buy a winning ticket *

Im sorry to say this but you did well. You have to expect a 40% return and you did get that.

      2014 Highest Winner: $500

This is the misconception for many scratch off players....Although the odds are 1 in 4 for example, that doesnt mean out of every 4 tickets there will be a winner. There could be 20 losers in a row, then on the next book of tickets there could be 5 winners in a row. Like others stated above, the odds posted are for the entire pool of tickets created for that game.

I think thats what the lottery wants people to think =)

Congrats on your wins posted above!. Ive never bought a whole book before, but Ive been thinking about it for a while now. Im going to a race in March for a guys vacation, I think I might buy one on my trip to splurge a lil bit. Havent decided which game I want to get yet

Buying at random has always worked out decent for me, but I at least once want to buy a book.

                Good luck to you Andrea

You should try a book of FMC 30 tickets $600 bucks. I have not had any big winners yet but I have a feeling $3 Million will be won soon.

                    2014 Highest Winner: $500

Thats what I was thinking also. The $20 "BDB" and $20 "200K for life" & $20 "$3 Mil Monopoly" are all $1,000 books which is steep. I can swing the $600. Im planning on doing this in about 3 weeks when I head out for my trip, so if the 1st $3Million top prize hasnt been claimed by then I will go with that one.

Ill post results after I do.

I really wish I had the cash to buy 3 or 4 BOOKS to test the theory, not just one book to test with 3 or 4 tickets in a row, for example.

I mean, if you apply the odds to books at a time instead of tickets, it makes me wonder if on average every 4 books would net you a profit.

Then again, this could also work against you. Just as there can be scores of losing tickets in a row, there could also be scores of losing books in a row.

however it would be fun to try it, particularly if you could manage to locate CONSECUTIVE books in a row, i.e. books numbered 101200, 101201, 101202, 101203 etc. The only problem is these are usually scattered to the 4 winds but I have noticed many shops with 2 books right next to each other such as 101200 and 101201. Maybe if its a big shop they might could get several in a row.

Ah well, I would litterally have to hit the lottery just to be able to find out ha ha

WELL The Other One, I tested that theory today...

Bought 1st book...5$ Stacks of cash...80 tix in a book = 400.00 , when all said and done, didn't even break even...165.00...no 100.00 scratcher or even higher, the highest ticket was 30.00...most were free tickets and 6 dollar amounts..these are supposed to have 20X too, no 20x, no 10x...nothing.

tried a 2nd book...100,000 Riches...same thing...5$ scratchers...also supposed to have 2x, 5x, 10 and 20 x...highest amount I received on one ticket was 100.00. there are also 2 boxes for a fast 20 or 50, not ONE card had it in the book.

Off of that book, 295.00...so just on that book, didnt even break even.

Went one more time on 3$ Poker...100 in a book...highest ticket amount...10 BUCKS.

Only had 1...when all said and done, cashed them in and had 145.00

so book one: spent 400.00 - got back 165.00

second book= spent 235.00 plus my 165.00- got back 295.00

third book- spent 300.00 and got 145.00...so after 3 books

so I didnt even make all of my money back

then bought one 2$ ticket and one 5$ ticket at random:
