I have an awesome story to share but I want to hear of others first. Were you ever really that close that you almost  cried? I will share a ticket and my story later when I post my ticket.

What? You've been mislead by your mind if you think you've almost Won: Either You Won or You Lost!

A mind once stretched by a new idea never returns to its original dimensions!

Everyone have their own ideas about what is close but the only ones that count are the ones the lottery pay for.  Any numbers other than the winning numbers isn't close even if they are only one digit off.

       * you don't need to buy more tickets, just buy a winning ticket *

I don't have any tales of woe about the Mega but I'd love to hear yours!

Yes, it's sad tiggs, but nobody wants to hear about how you won that Charleston Dance Contest back in the flapper days in the 1920's.

Nobody even knows what the Charleston was anymore.

People just got no respect for you old geezers.

Threads like this one seem to workout better when the person starting the thread tells their story first: The story you tell will be an inspiration to others to share their stories too!

To me really close to winning Mega Millions would mean matching 5 + 0 or 4 + 1. Since the least I could win is $10,000, I could either whine for a couple of months or brag about winning. A few years ago when I matched 5 out of 6 playing for a $24 million Ohio Lotto jackpot, I had no choice because it was the lowest match 5 payoff to date. It was pari-mutual and had averaged about $1500 before and after I collected $862 and had to pay taxes on that.

Haven't whined about that in years; thanks for bringing back a bad memory.

I wrote down the winning 5+0 for MM one day, a couple months after I turned 18, but never played it.  I was so suprised when I checked the numbers (I had 2 QPs) and saw that I wrote down the first 5 numbers.  I wrote down 4-19-26-28-39 * 41, the result was 4-19-26-28-39 * 14.

I wouldn't necessarily have to have won anything at all to think I was close to winning the Jackpot.

Not that being one digit off on all the numbers means I was close to it.

But knowing that if I had picked one up or down on all the numbers I picked I would have won.

That information and $3.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

That Ohio win must have been quite a few years ago because when I matched 5of6 in 2002 in Ohio Super Lotto, the payout was fixed at $1500 and the game had been running a few years then.

Ohio Classic Lotto is the same game with a few changes like the amount added to the jackpot after each drawing.  Ohio wasn't making much money when they were adding a million or two dollars to the jackpot after each drawing and changing that was easier by discontinuing the game for a year and bringing it back with a new name as an improved version of the old game.

The closest I have ever come to winning a jackpot prize was when I was up in front of the cashier to get a MM or PB ticket quick pick. At the very last second I said nah. I seen the results after the draw and says to myself, I betcha those were the numbers the quick picks would have been. DARN IT I lost by not buying that quick pick.

I matched 5 numbers in 1984 and I thought it paid $862 but I think it was under $700 because I remember whining not only about the low payoff but having to pay taxes on an amount barely over $600. I'm pretty sure the lotto was 6/44 then and the jackpot that night was an all time record. I can't remember if it was before or after they raised the ticket price from 50 cents to a dollar. A few years later they added numbers and made matching 5 numbers a fixed $1000 payoff.

I do remember how I picked the numbers; put each number on a piece of paper, mixed them up, and pulled out 6 at a time.
