And at the end of 11 months and one week into the year the score in jackpots paid out is Powerball 11 and Mega Millions 12.

I think it's the MM website says that it averages 2 to 15 jackpots a year.

      Imagine that!

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

      Lep

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

The PB ticket is twice as much so the jackpots should be two time higher. PB starts at $40 million so their jackpots should average over $100 million.

5 PB Jackpots won at 50m is very telling then.

I agree, powerball is a terrible game at $2 with a $40M starting jackpot. I am not playing powerball like I used to.

Powerball had a way better year than mega millions.  One jackpot for the record is all mega millions could muster in 12 months because the mega millions will not be that high bye the end of the year.  Powerball ruled 2012 with 2 $200 million plus jackpots and 2 $300 million plus jackpots not mega millions.  Who cares if it is a dollar to play.  I would much rather pay the extra dollar for a shot at a nice prize than play for jackpots that can't even break $100 million.  Plus I usually only buy one or two lines of powerball with powerplay so I don't mind spending $3 or $6 on a draw.  I don't even play mega millions because it has not gotten high enough this year to make me want to play.  I think they should increase the mega millions to $2 a ticket and add the megaplier for another $1 like powerball and see how big their jackpots get to.  Just my two cents.  Good luck to all who play!-weshar75

personally, I like the Oregon MegaBucks when the jackpot is over 9 million.

I play it when it gets to $8 million and higher because of the better odds.  Good luck to you whiteballz!-weshar75

The PB ticket is twice as much so the jackpots should be two time higher. PB starts at $40 million so their jackpots should average over $100 million.

Assuming you're using the advertised annuity value, the average payout should be a lot more than $100 million.

With odds of 1 in 175 million we should expect 1 winner for every 175 million tickets sold, as a long term average. With about 64 cents from each ticket going toward the jackpot, selling 175 million tickets puts about $112 million in the jackpot prize pool. Interest rates were higher at the beginning of the year so annuity values were a bit lower than right now, but based on the current ratio $112 million in cash would be advertised as a $169 million jackpot.

So how has PB fared since they went to 175 million to 1 odds and $2 per ticket? The jackpots that have been won since then are:
                                 336
                                  70
                                  60
                                  70
                                173
                                240
                                  60
                                337
                                202
                                  50
                                 588
$ 2186    million total annuity value

2,186 million divided by 11 jackpots = $198.7 million average annuity jackpot payout (about $130 million cash).

The average MM jackpot should be just about half as much, since the odds are essentially the same, but tickets and the amount going to the jackpot prize pool are half as much.  We should then expect average jackpots of about $56 million cash, with advertised annuity values of about $76 million (a bit less than 50% of the PB annuities because it's paid out sooner).   The actual jackpots so far this year have averaged about $109.8 million annuity, or about $81 million.
