Powerball

Rumors were wrong

Update: complete raw video of press conference added

By Todd Northrop

Contrary to rumors swirling in the media and on Web sites this morning, the New Jersey Lottery announced this morning at a press conference that the winning Powerball ticket for Saturday's $338.3 million jackpot was sold at a liquor store in Passaic.

New Jersey Lottery Executive Director Carole Hedinger announced Monday morning at a 10:00 am press conference that Eagle Liquors, located at 126 Passaic Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey, sold the winning ticket.

The liquor store will receive a bonus of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

When Hedinger announced the location of the winning ticket, an audible gasp could be heard among the media attending the event.  Probably as they were face-palming themselves for spending so much time early this morning reporting on the false rumors that the ticket was sold in Bordentown.

The New Jersey Lottery does not know who the winner is at this point, since the winner has not come forward yet.

After a brief statement about where the winning ticket was sold, Hedinger fielded various questions from the media, mainly covering topics such as the ability (or not) of the winner to remain anonymous, and tax issues.

The annuity value of the jackpot is $338.3 million, although most winners choose the lump-sum cash payout.

The approximate cash value of the jackpot is $211 million.  According to Hedinger, the federal taxes withheld from the cash payout will be $52,750,000 and New Jersey state taxes withheld will be $6,330,000, leaving a net payout of $151,920,000.

A complete raw video of the New Jersey Lottery press conference can be found below and on Lottery Post's You Tube page.

I got no problem with a winner staying anonmous, in fact whenever I see a winner having a news confrence and and holding interviews like they are famous I cringe and say a little prayer for them and their family that they don't end up cursed by the win.

So many stories in the media are claiming that this was the "6th largest jackpot ever".  I don't know who came up with that, but it seems that someone made this wrong claim, and the rest of the media continues to parrot it.

For the record, it is the 8th-largest annuity jackpot, and the 7th-largest cash value.

the winning Powerball ticket for Saturday's $338.3 million jackpot was sold at a liquor store in Passaic. The liquor store will receive a bonus of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

I am sorry but $10,000 bonus is ridiculous. We have a lottery winner in CA who won merely $6.5 millions but the retailer from where the winner bought the ticket got $32,500 bonus check.

That's a pretty fat paycheck for 30 seconds of work you were already paid for. Lottery retailers seem to be perfectly happy to sell tickets for a modest 5 to 7% commission, so I don't know why lottery commissions pay bonuses for selling big winners. Did the retailer do something to deserve more for selling this ticket than they did for any of the losing tickets they sold?

Pat Battle reporting for NBC was outside the Liquor Store and the winner is a Passaic bodega worker who was working all day and didn't realize the winning ticket was purchased at his regular lotto / liquor shop. He actually took out his ticket and gave it to the clerk to run through the machine and a jackpot message was indicated! I'm surprised no one followed him home....

I propose states should have a four part press conference after a win. (On seperate days of course)
1. Declare that your state sold the winning ticket
2. Declare what retailer sold the ticket
3. Whether it was a quick pick or self pick
4. Who the winner is, unless they can claim anonymous

Todd, when i heard bordentown on the news this morning, first thought was, out of state winner,

PA. turnpike, NJ. turnpike, US. 130, interstate 95/295 ppl. from all over the place in that area everyday,

it's like when a winner is sold at an airport.

I bet Jersey can't wait for their 10.8 %

The strange thing is that the NJ Lottery director said in her press conference this morning that NJ is only withholding 3% from the payout for state taxes.  I am not aware of any changes to the tax law in NJ, so my guess is that they take the rest later, but I need to check on it.

After NJ take their share, do they have to pay the IRS money also?

They both simultaneously get their share.  Both withhold fixed percentages of the jackpot upon initial payout, and then the winner will likely owe some more taxes by the end of the year.

Thanks for the reply Todd, seems pretty confusing if I was a US citizen and won first thing I would do is seek financial help from a lawyer or something. I guess most winners do that anyway.

Isn't this that woman who called a Press Conference to brag about her winning the jackpot while those in the pool she was a part of- did not? If it is her, she was a few fries short of a " happy meal".

She is a example of why I wouldn't want to be in a pool.

Uhm yes....the IRS (Internal Robbery Service) gets 25% off the top then you owe them another 15 -20% at tax time....Gotta love the private bankers looting the world....<snip>s.  The IRS is the collection arm of the private Federal Reserve.  The "Federal Reserve" is about as Federal as FEDEX.

That sucks, must be annoying if you won 500M and then they come along and take all 150M straight away. I would rather it go to charity than them taking it.

Yes, that is strange, maybe they already know that the winner is a resident ?

the winning Powerball ticket for Saturday's $338.3 million jackpot was sold at a liquor store in Passaic. The liquor store will receive a bonus of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

I am sorry but $10,000 bonus is ridiculous. We have a lottery winner in CA who won merely $6.5 millions but the retailer from where the winner bought the ticket got $32,500 bonus check.

Imagine if the winner is also the owner and gets the 10k. Drinks are on him.

Yeah, especially not with the Sweet Swine lady.

She hides the tickets and can't remember where she put 'em.

15-20 %? You mean state taxes? If so it's less. I am still confused why she said 3% instead of 10.8% for NJ state taxes.

Come hell or high water, jersey will collect 10.8%

3% must be w/holding, the winner is a resident.

Wow, that's good amount of bonus to the liquor store. For sure it will motivate them to sell more powerball tickets! :)
