Hey folks, lets use some common sense here.

If.    2 = 6        3 = 12        4 = 20        5 = 30        6 = 42 Then 9 = ?

2 x3 = 6

3 x 4 = 12

4 x 5 = 20

5 x 6 = 30

6 x 7 = 42

9 x 8 = 72

Got is?  LOL  love y'all

The left side is going up in increments of previous increment plus 2

he's not putting up a multiplication table

Hi timmer,

Your suggestion is +2 added to the increment on the left hand side. You probably meant the right-hand side.

So, re-running the sequence, we have:

2=6

3=12                (6)

4=20                (6+2)=8

5=30                (8+2)=10

6=42                (10+2)=12

7=56                (12+2)=14

8=68 ?            68=56+12, i.e., 14-2=12 (-2 on the previous increment) ?

9=74 ?            74=68+6, i.e., 12-6=6 (-6 on the previous increment) ?

I do not mean to antagonize or argue with any of the good fellows on this site. I’m just curious to see, if we put our heads together, what we come up with.

Now, I see the problem differently from before: if I’m setting focus on the right side without considering what’s happening on the left side, then 9=56 is just as good an answer. If we take into account a +1 progression on the previous value on the left side and, simultaneously, a +2 progression on the previous value on the right side then the answer would be 9=90. However, we assumed the “presence” of 7 and 8 on the left side, which is nowhere stipulated that we can do. It is like one of those IQ test entries where lateral thinking is required. But what the good choice is, for the life of me, I don’t know.

Best regards,
