30 people from an office chip in $1 dollar to buy megamillion tickets. Mary volunteers to buy the tickets. She brings the tickets the next day and they see that they won a few dollars on the mega ball. They decide to use the winnings to buy powerball tickets for that night. Mary again volunteers to buy the powerball tickets.

In the parking lot on the way home, Mary bumps into Bill who says, "Don't forget to get the powerball tickets." Mary had forgotten about it and also remembers that she left the winning megamillions tickets in her desk and does not know how much they won. She also doesn't have any  money on her. Bill gives her $20 and says. "This should cover it. Use this."  Mary buys $20 worth of powerball tickets with the $20 Bill gave her.

The next day the group finds out that they won the jackpot. They also realize that the original winning megamillions tickets were worth only $6 dollars. They had used the $20 Bill gave them to buy their jackpot winning powerball tickets. Here's the question...Is Bill entitled to a bigger cut of the pot since he provided more money to cover them than needed?  Yes? No? Why? Why not? If you think yes, how much more should he get?

Bill gave her money knowing she was purchasing money for a group.  He is entitled to an equal share and no more. It is not an issue of the "right thing to do" but more likely what a court would do based on the law and equities.

Bill is entitled to his $20 back along with the gratitude of all his coworkers regardless of what they win.  If they win nothing Mary could be stuck for the extra $14 Bill is entitled unless her coworkers are willing to contribute the extra bucks.

       * you don't need to buy more tickets, just buy a winning ticket *

No one knew the exact number of Mega wins in the parking lot.  Bill did a nice favor.  But, he should get an equal share and his $20 back.  They might also want to consider using the remaining $6, and buy $6 worth of MM.  Perhaps, they might win for the second time.

Mary should never volunteer to do this again!

            That's an understatement!

Mary had no idea of how much they won and not only forgot the winning tickets, forgets to buy the PB tickets too. Bill seems to be the smart one, although giving Mary $20 with her track record wasn't very smart either. The story said the MM tickets were worth $6 and Bill gave Mary $20 and said "This should cover it. Use this."

It could be worse; Bill could have given Mary $100.

LOL Stack yeah Mary sounds a little ditzy, they'd be lucky if she remembeed where she even put that jackpot ticket. Yeah Id have to relieve her of her lottery ticket buying duties
