If Texas scraps the state lottery, you can always play another state lottery.

The Massachusetts State Lottery offers a subscription service, which is open to all residents across the USA.

Players can subscribe over the phone and your Season Tickets will be mailed to you.

Players can purchase Season Tickets for 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months.

We all get a lot out of lotteries!

Well for me it would be a long drive for lottery tickets from another state:

    485 miles to Louisiana

    550 miles to New Mexico

    585 miles to Oklahoma

    630 miles to Arkansas

So a subscription service like that would be an option.

Not keen on buying a static set of tickets for months on end, though.

I would drive to OK, which is only about 45 minutes.

As far as subscriptions for MA lottery, I think you still have to reside in the state of MA to buy MA tickets, even by subscription.

I would think you would be getting a LOT of border crossings, and I don't mean the illegal kind...

There will be very angry Texans, If they do scrap it, it won't take long for the masses demanding it back.

            I'll be one of those!

However, I really don't think they will be stupid enough to scrap it.

            I think.

            Maybe.

Here in Oklahoma we also have casinos so you can come get your lottery tickets and then really let off some steam at the slot machines.

I'd buy them for Powerball because I have a set I always play anyway.  Can an Idahoan get the Mass discounted tickets, I wonder?

Edited to add:  Do they sell them online?  I don't see that option.

I asked the lady who sold me the tickets and she said no they can't sell MM & PB & L4L season tickets to a person from another state. It must be something the states agreed to to protect their backyards. She said they could only sell you the Megabucks Doubler (Lotto 6/49) if you want.

Do they sell them online?  I don't see that option.

                  No you have to call.

                    Well............

Critics have long sought to end the Texas lottery, and the issue came to a head last year when members of the Texas House, in an unexpected move, voted to do so. Within hours, as questions arose about how to replace the money that flows from the lottery into the state's public schools, legislators shifted gears and continued the lottery.

I thought the title "Is it game over for the Texas Lottery" was to get people to read the article and not an accurate assessment. Each state with a lottery has opponents and they will always be the most vocal, but at the end of the day common sense usually wins out. Many states lotteries are discussing online play and the same critics will come out of the woodwork there too.

Critics say they fear that the game financially hurts some of the most vulnerable Texans and doesn't do enough to help the state. Supporters disagree and question where $1 billion a year can be found to replace revenue lost if the entrenched business is shut down.

When I lived in Ohio, the pros and cons of casino gambling was discussed by state legislators almost daily, but the in the end it was extra revenue without taxing that got it passed. I just can see the Texas or any state legislators abolishing a $1 billion plus source of revenue and then raise taxes to make up the difference.

A lottery isn't bad, a few other things can be bad, like sex without condom, working for little money, drinking alcohol and using drugs, also not being paid out enough when winning. The lottery was for the poor to finance organizers' interests (war, guns, vacation, hookers, sports cars, houses ...). A modern lottery should finance the poor?

From the Mass. lottery FAQ page:

Can non-residents play the game? If so, how do they collect?

Yes, anyone 18 and over can purchase any Lottery product at any agent location. All players can collect their prizes at the same locations referenced in the "How do customers collect their winnings" FAQ. Season Tickets can be purchased directly from any sales agent while in the state, or from out of state by calling l-800-222-TKTS. The ticket can be registered in the owner's name by completing and returning the registration form to the Lottery. Season Tickets are available for Lucky for Life, Mega Millions, Megabucks Doubler and Powerball.

Mega Millions Season Tickets CANNOT be purchased via phone or by mail from out of state.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.
