$HALF-BILLION! Powerball raised again on monster sales

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

Less than 24 hours after lottery officials were forced to raise the Wednesday Powerball jackpot estimate, they have done it again — now to $500 million.

The current jackpot is the third-largest in Powerball history and the fifth-largest jackpot of any lottery game in U.S. history.

It is only the fifth time in history that lottery players have been able to play for a half-billion dollars.  It could all go to one person.

The new estimated lump-sum cash value of the jackpot is $337.8 million.

Early Sunday morning, around 5:25 am Eastern Time, USA Mega announced the new record Powerball jackpot of $450 million after nobody won in the Saturday evening drawing. Then, on Tuesday afternoon lottery officials raised the jackpot estimate to $485 million on bigger-than-expected sales.

Now, less than 24 hours later, the jackpot estimate for Wednesday's Powerball drawing has been raised yet again to $500 million, with a lump-sum cash option of $337.8 million.

That's an increase of $105.5 million from the Wednesday jackpot of $394.5 million. And yet, the jackpot will probably be even higher by the time the drawing occurs at 10:59 pm Eastern Time (7:59 pm Pacific Time) tonight.

Surely, tickets are being sold at such a rapid pace that many of the possible number combinations are being covered — multiple times for some combinations — but one still has to ask: what if just one person wins $337.8 million in cash? It's hard for most people to even picture a number that large, let alone manage that much cash.

Perhaps more interesting to imagine is, what if nobody wins Wednesday?

Lottery players seeking to check the winning numbers Wednesday night are urged to use USA Mega (www.usamega.com). State lottery Web sites are normally brought to a standstill during busy periods, while USA Mega normally remains responsive.

Powerball drawing results will be posted immediately after the 10:59 pm drawing at USA Mega. The number of winners and new jackpot will be announced after all participating Powerball states have reported their data, which normally occurs within a couple of hours after the drawing.

Tickets will remain on sale typically until 10:45 pm Eastern Time on Saturday, although players should check with a lottery retailer in their state for the exact sales cutoff time. Players are advised not to wait until the last minute.

The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 175 million. The odds of winning any of the Powerball prizes are approximately 1 in 32.

Lottery players can see an after-tax analysis of the current Powerball jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Jackpot Analysis page.

Powerball features nine different prize levels, ranging from $4 all the way up to the jackpot. Players can win even if they just match one number — the Powerball number.

States also offer the Power Play option for an extra dollar per ticket purchased. The Power Play multiplies any non-jackpot prizes won by a fixed amount, depending on the prize level won.

Players who purchase the Power Play and win second prize will automatically have their prize increased by 2x to $2 million.

Just over 253,000,000 dollar bills after tax, that's a lot of shoe boxes to fill.

I'd have no problem picking 4 other family members to share the ticket with at this amount (heck, even if there were another winning ticket).

This is not news. It is nothing more than a ploy to get a lot of people spun up over nothing. Only Uncle Sam, the eventual winning ticket holder(s), and their advisors care about the jackpot amount. I play the same whether it is $40 million or $500 million. I just give myself a chance every drawing.

As is written elsewhere on these forums, the numbers on the balls are meaningless to which get sucked up. 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 are just as possible as the previous winning numbers.

But yea, news sites would crash and social sites would burn with the attention those numbers would bring if they ended up being drawn.

just federal and state taxes. also as far as federal it's 25% off the top for lottery winnings.

delS

The 25% federal tax is not complete. You are correct to view your federal bill as 39% of your winning. Plus state tax. Do the math that way and you will not have shock when they come for a bigger slice of the pie.

It depends on how many tickets are sold when it's all over and done with. I'm assuming that MUSL has a decent handle on it by now, but are being deliberately conservative. I'll guess that it will definitely reach 510 or so, and maybe a good bit higher. These numbers have been rounded a bit, but are fairly close:

500   53%
525   46%
550   39%
575   33%
600   29%

go read the federal tax form the default tax they remove off the top is 25% not 39%. i did not say you would not owe the other 14% later when you file at end of year.

I always see news stories of major long lines and big waits for tickets when a JP gets this large. I must live in a state with a huge amount of lottery vendors. I've never had more than 1 person in line ahead of me at a lottery terminal no matter how big the JP gets.

Yes, mrlottojackpot, your research is correct.  Some folks may also owe that "city/municipal tax rate" and all residents owe the 'highest tax bracket charged Medicare tax rate' (which I think is apx. 4%); which you also wrote of.

Good preparations you've been making! Cheers

They take 25% off top first to make sure you cant spend it all without getting there cut first. non-usa residents pay 30% off top plus state. after that you full tax bill of ur 39.6% is due because you will def make more than $406,751 for single tax fillers

I have been playing since i was 19 and have a good plan for diff size jackpots and always have a good idea on total taxes due so i know what i can spend and not owe anything besides sales tax on all my homes and lamborghini's. and i thought medicare tops is almost $8,000 no matter if you make a million or a billion. was just unsure if city and others get a cut to

mrlottojackpot

And my wish is even if i dont won this one i like huge jackpots to go to one ticket

The only reason i can think of as to why they don't pull the whole 39.6% (capital gains rate) is so you can do things for write offs like charitable donations etc.

Do I WANT more than 1 winner?  or do I think there will be more than 1 winner.

If I got to choose - I would select 325 1M$/2M$ winners and 1 JP winner.  Can you imagine?  325 winners of 2nd place - with 318 of them slapping their foreheads for NOT paying the extra 1$ to have doubled their win?  And 1 happy JP winner - who is smart enough to stay anonymous.  Keep the mystery alive!

And when its 40M$?  1 winner - definitely 1 winner.

so question to all the people who say they want more than one winner. do u buy your ticket in hopes to win it with 5 person spilt even at $40 million start jackpot? if so u should just play for second place and leave the jackpot for the big dreamers. if u want 100 to win a million wish for a 100 people to win 2nd place and they can be happy.

I don't wish for 5 winners at $40 million, but I would for 5 winners at $400 million. I just like the idea of having more winners rather than larger jackpots. Those 5 winners at $400 million would also have a lot more money per person than if they all won at the same time for a $40 million jackpot. In fact, I'd be happy if odds were made better for players and jackpots never went over $40 million.

Not really sure why it matters what someone's opinion on the matter is. Neither one is right or wrong, just different.

Since California has been contributing the Lion's share of the jackpot, well all jackpots up till now, it seems only fair that California claim the entire jackpot- l mean the whole enchilada.Fair is fair.Big Smile

Gotta just love how the media likes to focus on the long odds of winning the jackpot. Yes you're more likely to be struck by lightning than win the jackpot. But people do get struck by lightning every year and people do win the jackpot every year.  And last time I checked, the odds of winning the jackpot are zero if you don't buy a ticket. So I'm going to improve my odds by buying a PB ticket.

I'm always annoyed with the you're never going to win and if someone wins it's more likely to be someone else comments. That may be, but isn't that exactly what every winner is told before they win?

I mean, you may not wake up tomorrow and find you're holding the winning ticket, but someone else might. And that person had the same chances you had at winning. There is almost zero difference between the person who wins and the people who don't.

Hate to break it to you Jack but you have been locked up too long in that box of yours.

FYI- Gloria Mackenzie the $590 million Powerball winner from Florida was not the least bit wealthy when she won. There have been plenty of winners in their 20's and 30's as well as some in their 70's and 80's.

Winning a jackpot is not based on age or financial status, if you have a ticket you have a chance just like anybody else.

Jackie - one of the reasons " Old" people win is because we have more Old people playing. The " Old" people are living longer and enjoying life. Many have traded in Bingo for the lottery. I would rather read of Old people winning than shaking my head at reports of a " Young" winner who used his/her wealth to shove needles in their veins or powder up their noses.

I am generally not a share the wealth type person (let's have 100 winners for a million $ each!) but when the Jackpot is this high, I always feel there is more protection (or less of a potential threat) for the winners when several split it. Then no one, even the press, is all so intently focused on one winner. If I won a large JP, I would hope several others won as well to take attention off of me.

because you can only play 104 times a year. you only have so many years left to live so why not play every drawing and hope you cash even a 40 million jackpot which is enough for anybody regardless of the masses who only play if it's 200 million or more thus diminishing their chance to win anything.

Why not play 104 tickets in 1 drawing, instead of 104 drawings a year? Not only do you have a higher probability of winning (assuming the goal is to win at least once), but you don't waste your time playing lowball jackpots. If you're gonna play, go big! Wink

Personally though, I am fine playing one wee little ticket, since that's all it takes.

Unequivocally, there is no chance of a roll over.  Every time I finally buy a lottery ticket, someone that is not me wins on that drawing.  I just bought one.

According to my calculations there is about a 48% chance of a rollover and 52% chance you are right.

I've got a ticket but secretly hope it rolls over, just to see how high we can get this thing. It would be a new record for sure.

Dang.  Is that a great pic or what?  It makes the mouth water haha.  Id say we need at least 5 or 6 numbers coming out of the hopper to be 32 or above to roll again.  The self pickers have the birthday combinations covered up multiple times.  Higher numbers drawn could produce a single ticket winner.

Do you really think 1 or 104 tickets makes that big of a difference when there are 175,000,000 possible numbers? What you're saying would make sense in a raffle, but not the lottery where there is such a high number of possibilities.

Whether it's 1 line for each draw of the year or 104 lines for one draw, your chances of winning are pretty much the same. If you have $416 you want to use for research, go buy 104 lines for tonight, and then a single line ticket for tonight and for the following 103 draws. In a year, calculate your numbers and report back. And be aware, though almost literally impossible, only the 1 line ticket has the potential to win 104 jackpots or 104 second place prizes.

Mathematically it is still better to play 104 tickets in 1 drawing rather than 1 ticket in 104 drawings. After all, the goal is to win at least once, and the probability of doing so is highest with the "all-in" method. If you win once, then you could easily use those winnings to win as many more times as you can afford. Thus, the idea of 104 jackpots or whatever is unnecessary.

It doesn't matter if the difference is small, the fact is there is a difference. Most people don't have the restraint to play one draw a year. Almost everyone doesn't get entertainment out of the idea either. But it doesn't change the math. If I buy 104 tickets for a draw, I have a 1 in 1.752 million chance of winning (assuming all unique tickets). If I buy 1 ticket for a draw, I have a 1 in 175,223,510 chance of winning. And it's the same for every draw. That's math.

If i remb right, that was due to fortune cookies coming up and hitting 2nd place, the poor lottery folks was like wtf with all these winners.

Then the  lottery folks kindly asked the fortune cookie makers to change there lottery numbers around more often rofl.

The lottery has reserves built in for such fortune/lost happen chance numbers coming up so they be alright if fate kicks them again.

If I buy 104 tickets for a draw, I have a 1 in 1.752 million chance of winning (assuming all unique tickets). If I buy 1 ticket for a draw, I have a 1 in 175,223,510 chance of winning. And it's the same for every draw. That's math.

If you buy 1 line, you have a 99.9999994% chance of losing that draw. If you buy 104 lines, you have a 99.9999406% chance of losing that draw. So by playing 103 more lines, you have increased your chances by 0.00587999999%.

Like I said, the difference isn't that big.

I'd rather have a bad chance to win in 104 draws than having a slightly better, but still bad, chance of winning in 1 draw and zero chance of winning in 103 other draws.

That's the spirit lottolucy! I always buy a powerball and mm ticket for ever draw my self!

Even the starter jackpots offer you all the handful of millions in cash you ever need to invest towards stocks of like coca cola  & nestle to be set for life....

You never have to even touch the principal amount, as you get enough in dividends each year to live in a upper class lifestyle if you was smart with it!

It would be based off the same game plan am doing for my normal life atm, it's just a middle class lifestyle retirement plan

While any jackpot win would turn it  into 0.01% retirement plan LOL

Higher jackpots are just like you said, for buying items like a private jet card and a insane nice house, etc.

I'd rather have a bad chance to win in 104 draws than having a slightly better, but still bad, chance of winning in 1 draw and zero chance of winning in 103 other draws.

You're focusing on the jackpot, but I forgot to mention that the math is the same for lower prizes too. You are more likely to walk away with more prizes. Don't be fooled by the idea that more draws gives you more chances. If the lottery drew 104 sets of numbers for a draw and you bought 1 ticket, it would be the same as you buying 104 tickets and they drawing 1 set of numbers. But 104 separate draws is not the same as 1, due to independence. In fact, you can guarantee some winnings by playing multiple tickets in one draw, but you cannot guarantee anything by playing a single ticket in many draws. And you have virtually equal chance of getting multiple prizes as you would playing multiple draws. 1 ticket may win 104 draws, but 104 tickets could win in 1 draw too...however unlikely both!

Regardless, playing more draws is probably more fun.

"only the 1 line ticket has the potential to win 104 jackpots or 104 second place prizes."

People always say there's no such thing as a free lunch, and that's the trade off for increasing your chances of winning a jackpot (or any other prize) by playing all of your tickets for a single drawing. Of course, with odds of 1 in 175 million and 1 in 5 million, buying 104 tickets for 104 different drawings gives you only an infinitesimally small chance of winning  one big prize, let alone 2 or more.

What is a free lunch is the option of getting the same chance at $564 million for $2 as other people get at $40 million. I don't imagine very many people would have the discipline to not buy any tickets in the other 103 drawings during the year, and I really don't see many people risking their $208 budget on a single drawing, but there's plenty of middle ground between playing just one or all 104 drawings.

In a typical year there are 10 to 12 winners, so there are typically 10 to 12 periods where the jackpot is less than $100 million for at least 6 drawings. Last year it was 64 drawings, with an average jackpot of about $60 million. That left 40 drawings with average jackpots of about $160 million. The closest you can get to making logical bets on the lottery is by spending your money on the chances that offer bigger jackpots.

While that strategy would make it impossible to win multiple jackpots, it doesn't eliminate your chances of winning multiple prizes of lesser amounts. Playing 104 unique combinations in a single drawing could theoretically also win 34 2nd place prizes, 2 3rd place prizes and 68 4th place prizes, totaling $34,026,800. That's more than the cash value of the roughly 20 to 24 $40 and $50 million jackpots you'll be betting on by playing every drawing.

Turbo996

@Thrifty: Thank you. Played the numbers in you post and won $4. Had another play with the same PB #19 and won another $4. And I won a $1 playing Super Lotto (CA).
