Less than 24 hours after lottery officials were forced to raise the Wednesday Powerball jackpot estimate, they have done it again — now to $500 million.
The current jackpot is the third-largest in Powerball history and the fifth-largest jackpot of any lottery game in U.S. history.
It is only the fifth time in history that lottery players have been able to play for a half-billion dollars. It could all go to one person.
The new estimated lump-sum cash value of the jackpot is $337.8 million.
Early Sunday morning, around 5:25 am Eastern Time, USA Mega announced the new record Powerball jackpot of $450 million after nobody won in the Saturday evening drawing. Then, on Tuesday afternoon lottery officials raised the jackpot estimate to $485 million on bigger-than-expected sales.
Now, less than 24 hours later, the jackpot estimate for Wednesday's Powerball drawing has been raised yet again to $500 million, with a lump-sum cash option of $337.8 million.
That's an increase of $105.5 million from the Wednesday jackpot of $394.5 million. And yet, the jackpot will probably be even higher by the time the drawing occurs at 10:59 pm Eastern Time (7:59 pm Pacific Time) tonight.
Surely, tickets are being sold at such a rapid pace that many of the possible number combinations are being covered — multiple times for some combinations — but one still has to ask: what if just one person wins $337.8 million in cash? It's hard for most people to even picture a number that large, let alone manage that much cash.
Perhaps more interesting to imagine is, what if nobody wins Wednesday?
Lottery players seeking to check the winning numbers Wednesday night are urged to use USA Mega (www.usamega.com). State lottery Web sites are normally brought to a standstill during busy periods, while USA Mega normally remains responsive.
Powerball drawing results will be posted immediately after the 10:59 pm drawing at USA Mega. The number of winners and new jackpot will be announced after all participating Powerball states have reported their data, which normally occurs within a couple of hours after the drawing.
Tickets will remain on sale typically until 10:45 pm Eastern Time on Saturday, although players should check with a lottery retailer in their state for the exact sales cutoff time. Players are advised not to wait until the last minute.
The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 175 million. The odds of winning any of the Powerball prizes are approximately 1 in 32.
Lottery players can see an after-tax analysis of the current Powerball jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Jackpot Analysis page.
Powerball features nine different prize levels, ranging from $4 all the way up to the jackpot. Players can win even if they just match one number — the Powerball number.
States also offer the Power Play option for an extra dollar per ticket purchased. The Power Play multiplies any non-jackpot prizes won by a fixed amount, depending on the prize level won.
Players who purchase the Power Play and win second prize will automatically have their prize increased by 2x to $2 million.

The 25% federal tax is not complete. You are correct to view your federal bill as 39% of your winning. Plus state tax. Do the math that way and you will not have shock when they come for a bigger slice of the pie.

It depends on how many tickets are sold when it's all over and done with. I'm assuming that MUSL has a decent handle on it by now, but are being deliberately conservative. I'll guess that it will definitely reach 510 or so, and maybe a good bit higher. These numbers have been rounded a bit, but are fairly close:

I always see news stories of major long lines and big waits for tickets when a JP gets this large. I must live in a state with a huge amount of lottery vendors. I've never had more than 1 person in line ahead of me at a lottery terminal no matter how big the JP gets.

I don't wish for 5 winners at $40 million, but I would for 5 winners at $400 million. I just like the idea of having more winners rather than larger jackpots. Those 5 winners at $400 million would also have a lot more money per person than if they all won at the same time for a $40 million jackpot. In fact, I'd be happy if odds were made better for players and jackpots never went over $40 million.

FYI- Gloria Mackenzie the $590 million Powerball winner from Florida was not the least bit wealthy when she won. There have been plenty of winners in their 20's and 30's as well as some in their 70's and 80's.
Winning a jackpot is not based on age or financial status, if you have a ticket you have a chance just like anybody else.

I am generally not a share the wealth type person (let's have 100 winners for a million $ each!) but when the Jackpot is this high, I always feel there is more protection (or less of a potential threat) for the winners when several split it. Why not play 104 tickets in 1 drawing, instead of 104 drawings a year? Not only do you have a higher probability of winning (assuming the goal is to win at least once), but you don't waste your time playing lowball jackpots. If you're gonna play, go big!

Do you really think 1 or 104 tickets makes that big of a difference when there are 175,000,000 possible numbers? What you're saying would make sense in a raffle, but not the lottery where there is such a high number of possibilities.

After all, the goal is to win at least once, and the probability of doing so is highest with the "all-in" method. I got the 650 from the Puerto Rican lottery website, they always update as soon as they get the new jackpot.
I think the Puerto Rico site is wrong, at least one winner tonight. The fun's over. At least the site won't melt down Saturday night.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. I enjoyed playing "what if" and looking into private jet cards and new houses but, honestly, I would be just as happy to win "only" enough to retire early and maintain my current middle class lifestyle.

You're focusing on the jackpot, but I forgot to mention that the math is the same for lower prizes too. You are more likely to walk away with more prizes. Don't be fooled by the idea that more draws gives you more chances. If the lottery drew 104 sets of numbers for a draw and you bought 1 ticket, it would be the same as you buying 104 tickets and they drawing 1 set of numbers. But 104 separate draws is not the same as 1, due to independence. In fact, you can guarantee some winnings by playing multiple tickets in one draw, but you cannot guarantee anything by playing a single ticket in many draws. And you have virtually equal chance of getting multiple prizes as you would playing multiple draws. 1 ticket may win 104 draws, but 104 tickets could win in 1 draw too...however unlikely both!
Regardless, playing more draws is probably more fun.

People always say there's no such thing as a free lunch, and that's the trade off for increasing your chances of winning a jackpot (or any other prize) by playing all of your tickets for a single drawing. Of course, with odds of 1 in 175 million and 1 in 5 million, buying 104 tickets for 104 different drawings gives you only an infinitesimally small chance of winning one big prize, let alone 2 or more.
What is a free lunch is the option of getting the same chance at $564 million for $2 as other people get at $40 million. I don't imagine very many people would have the discipline to not buy any tickets in the other 103 drawings during the year, and I really don't see many people risking their $208 budget on a single drawing, but there's plenty of middle ground between playing just one or all 104 drawings.
