I will never be one of those people who find out two months later that I've won the jackpot when I find an old ticket in my glove box. I take photos of all my tickets and usually check my numbers the same night. What I do have trouble with some times is managing my small win tickets. I often play multi-draw tickets so I will forget which small win went with which ticket or my personal assistant (OK, my husband ) will stop to get my tickets for me and I don't want to burden him with turning them in so they pile up.
I was really excited to see that the Maryland Lottery has a new My Lottery Rewards App that reads the bar code on your ticket and tells you how much you won. You can also scan to enter tickets for reward points. While I did have some issues with the app crashing (which might have been due to my ancient iPhone-- not sure) it did work and I went through my piled up tickets and found $119 worth of winning tickets since April.
Washington State has a similar app for their games as well that I have also found useful.
I like that I will now be able to go into a store, hand the clerk my tickets, and know exactly what I have coming back without having to use the in store scanners.
