They've been trying for years to get people to buy tickets earlier.  This year they're offering a $5,000 prize (awarded in a drawing) to someone who buys a ticket in the first 10 days.  And they are giving an instant $1,000 prize to the person who buys each 25,000th ticket.

I coulda sworn there used to be a two or four $25,000 prizes, but none this year.  I don't like the prize matrix at all.

Man I am glad I don't live in idaho that raffle is no bueno!  The lower prizes are horrible.  At least in oregon their is $500 and $100 prizes to go along with the million prize.-weshar75

I'd so much rather see them cut the $25 prizes way back and use 2000 of those for two $25K prizes instead.

I for one do not look at the list of prizes and see all those $25 level prizes and think "Ooooh, maybe I'll spend $10 for a chance at THAT!"  Nope, I look at that and think there are probably better things to spend my ten bucks on.

I was planning on buying several tickets this year, but I think I'll stick with just one with that matrix.  Looks like Oregon will be getting my raffle business too.

Been awhile since Michigan had a raffle, they used to have some with almost the same format.

Good luck to you HoLeeKau, no matter which state you play.

Here lately my lottery has only been adding instant lose components to their games.

If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?

I just thought of a way a retailer could game this instant win.  Our state website has a countdown of tickets sold that's updated very frequently.  It looks like every minute or two.  A retailer could keep checking and when it gets close just keep printing tickets until the 25,000th one is sold.  Maybe their machine would be the one to print it, maybe not.

Then they could do like they always do with mistake tickets.  Put one in the machine and sell it to the next person who wants a raffle ticket.  Most could sell 20 or more in one shift.  So they could gamble and not even have to pay for it.

I hate playing games that rely on the retailer's honesty.  Maybe I just have trust issues, but I think there are a lot of clerks and store owners who would do this in situations where they could get away with it.  Most of them are generally honest people in life, but just take a look at the news stories on this site to see what lottery winnings do to the character of many people.

So, I've given up on the idea of trying to win the instant $1k on tickets with multiples of 25,000.  I'm just going to buy my one ticket before the 30th so I can enter the 2nd chance draw for $5K and call it good.

Definitely way too easy to game, especially for retailers. A better way would be selecting a random ticket out of every 25,000 sold. Very easy to program, and difficult to abuse. As it stands now, a retailer can wait for low as 24,950 (or multiple of) and then hit the machine hard and buy 50 tickets and double their money, plus have 50 raffle chances too. In reality, most retailers seeking to abuse this would likely buy a few tickets or less, and yet still have a decent chance of getting the $1000 golden ticket.

All in all, very poorly thought out. As Texas Lottery All or None saga illustrated (they had no prize cap in the beginning; many players choosing same sets of numbers resulting in a potential prize liability of upwards of 100-250 million!), many lotteries don't perform sufficient research nor testing of their games.

If the clerks at the retailer actually buy the tickets, I really don't have a problem with it.  I or any other random player could stand at a vending machine when the lucky number is close and do the same thing.  Feed hundred dollar bills in and keep pushing the button.

My problem is that the retailers could do it without risking any money, by selling the non-instant win tickets to their unsuspecting customers.
