I always assumed they deposited the money electronically for someone who wants to be paid in a lump sum. Am I wrong?

I read in the Calif rule book, it is by check. They will provide a security guard to accompany you to your bank, though.  I never read press coverage about people picking up the check so at least they allow you privacy in that regard.

Thanks  I Don't even know why I'm researching this stuff as I've never won more than $10 but for most of these cities to not protect winners names in this day and age is beyond pathetic.

Why would anyone even need a security guard? The check is only payable to the winner and if lost or stolen will be cancelled and a new one issued.

If you go to the Calif lotto site, you can read or download a copy of their handbook for winners.

Because the check they give you is the same giant one you hold at the press conference. The guard is just there to help you carry it.

It's just another part of their marketing plan.

Then mail in the check/ use a courier?

Does the bodyguard live with you after?

Take a picture of it with your phone and deposit it electronically.

Although, with a check that size they would probably want to confirm!

No one sane would put that much money in one bank account. So, after depositing, there would be a whole of money being moved around. I think the lucky winner and his financial adviser(s) would have to be at the bank to see it done properly.

If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.

Yes and when I win he will be compensated handsomely and required to go by the name "Alfred Pennyworth".  Together we will begin work on the Bat Cave.
