The decision as to what to do - taken out of my hands. Wow has today been a crazed day thus far. One of the 2 senior partners came by as 3 of my co-workers were going berzerk. He (sr. ptnr) scooped up all the lottery tickets and marched into his office (into which I had never been until today - MAN is his office big and fabulous!). 1 by 1 we were each called into the office - he had a preliminary agreement drafted up for us to read - he gave us each the opportunity to pony up the extra 50$, and then based upon what we decided to do - he had his assistant plug in numbers - printed out a 'final' copy of the agreement (short & succinct) - his intern witnessed it, one of the other staff notarized it - and we were each whisked out, our copy in hand, for the next person.
About 1.5 hours later it was all done. He came out and told us that it was done and over. That as of Sunday January 17th - the lottery pool in his office was finished, aka defunct and that no further conversation was to be had about it on company property during company time (even breaks and lunches).
What did I do? I handed over my 50$ (as my dh had already strongly suggested I do) - listened, signed and left his office - all the time as silent as the dead - not even sure if I took a breath. I doubt much work will be done today, as for me at least - I am still slightly shaking. According to my agreement I have a 26/696 share of this pot for Wednesday and a 1/21 share for Saturday's draw.
I will not get involved in another lottery pool. No, no, no. I am too old to feel as if I just got called to the Principal's office for skipping classes. My heart is still at an elevated beats/min. What I regret most? My dh is going to laugh until he makes himself ill, when I tell him about this.
Wow! Did he give you a copy of all the tickets? Did then senior partner buy in, too?
In some ways I can't blame him. It sounded like a real mess and the woman who put you in this situation will probably have trouble finding someone to eat lunch with for a while!
I'm sorry this happened to you. Some people are just joy suckers...and I am not talking about the senior partner.

Buying tickets for the next two drawings makes less sense than buying extra tickets for the pool without asking. If the nobody wins on Wednesday will they charge you another $50 to stay in the pool for Saturday's drawing?
Your work place will be one of many with "hostel working conditions" created by jackpot fever, but the senior partner put the company at risk by taking over what should have been a simple office lottery pool.

WOW!!! Thanks for sharing this, very interesting. My work (small office) is not even talking about PB, so I don't mention it as I am not sure I want to be part of a pool with them.

This has fustercluck written all over it. Besides the problems with the pool itself, if lawsuit comes out of it the company is almost certainly going to be included as a defendant, and I'm guessing that any major prize will guarantee a lawsuit.
I'll assume that the partner, intern and notary are all non-participants? Based on the 26/696 share I'm assuming some people didn't choose to kick in the extra $50. How was it decided which tickets they have a share of? Even if the agreement spells that out and it seems to be a logical way to decide there's no question that it will be a major argument in a lawsuit.
I'm not opposed to the idea of pools, but this is a great example of why they need to be well organized and have a written agreement that spells out all of the details.
Depending on the job the buyer has, I'm inclined to think the amazing display of poor judgment is a good indication that she should be offered a chance to explore other career opportunities.

sounds like th aprtner ponyed up all the money , then drew up a legal agreement. once he got the $50, or didnt get the $50 offof ea worker, he has all the remaining shares, and yeah. good luck suing a senior partner. bottom line problem solved. and no more pools

The day ended quietly - except for the ringing laughter of my dh.
You probably know more about lotto then any of them. Maybe you should run the pool so it's done right. I don't run ours but i always tell them what needs to be done. One of the meat heads wanted to do $10 a person but i made them stay at $4.

Ok - so everyone is excited about the Billion dollar+ jackpot. I get that - I'm excited as well. I am part of a small yet intense lottery-pool at work. 20+ in the group depending on whomever pays for that week. Simple enough. A different person (rotating) buys tickets each week to share the "responsibility" - and then scans all tickets and emails them to the playing members.
So far so good - yes? Welp - just got an email from this week's buyer. She decided (all on her own) that we needed to buy MORE tickets since the jackpot is so high. - this is her first time as buyer and she will buy Wednesday 13th and Saturday 16th draws)
she decided that we each needed (NEEDED) to pay an additional 50$ per person - and since she was able to find a terminal (local Shell gas station) that didnt have a line - she "prepaid" for everyone in the group... all 27 of us who have been part of the pool in the last year. Since she has a tight budget she is expecting us to pony up with our 50$ bright and early Monday morning.
I'm not. Each week prior to this - we put in 6$ each for 1 draw of pb & mm per draw date... It's not the question of whether or not I could/can afford 50$ - I can, this just feels wrong on so many levels and I expect some of our less-than calm members to blow a gasket.
Has anyone run into this type of cavalier behavior within your groups? dh thinks I should just plop down my 50$ with a statement that I am OUT of the pool after this week. I want to wring her lily-white neck.
Well, sorry to say I think your girl crossed the line.
I ran a lottery pool for a group for 3 or 4 years. 1st we had a signed agreement, signed by all with copies to all. I collected the funds, bought ALL the tickets and distributed them via picture copies via the email to all the players, prior to the drawing. If someone didn't get the money to me in time, they bought their ticket, put their name on it and sent it to me to distribute as part of the group play.
It was decided in writing, in the contract, how the money was to be spent, how much to spend and what would happen with any wins. I think your girl crossed the line making an executive decision for all, to jump to $50 per person and then to be so bodacious to shell out the dough and expect you all to reciprocate. Granted you are going to have some pee-ode folks I think.. know I would be.
Best resolution if you are all not on board for this, is one, don't let her buy tickets on the group behalf anymore and if no one wants to flip for the $50 additional bucks, you all give her your $6 each, just as you have been doing in the past.
Then the group select the tickets they want to keep that they just paid for and she has the extra $50 per player she decided to spend on her own towards the drawing. Let's face it, her odds are as good as yours as hitting it, no matter how many tickets.. and she'll have a good lesson learned when she wakes up Thursday with a meager win (if she is lucky) on her $1200 plus!
No doubt she got caught up on the moment and decided to drag you all along for "HER" ride! LOL

Well, in my opinion it was handled in the best possible way. I am not sure what I would have done in regards to chipping in my share of the money for the tickets that were already purchased.... I don't think I would ever forgive myself if I didn't chip in and one of the tickets turned out to be a winner!

I got a snarky sister in law that does crap like that. I'd let her eat it.

Tell them it's not gonna help lol. Some people in a department where I work put down $3,000 on the last drawing and only won $7!!! They set it up to where the pool members could just throw in as much $ as they wanted on tickets instead of everyone just buying one.
This time they'll just be buying one per pool member LMAO.
