Pick-3 Box or Straight ??Prev TopicNext Topic
-
Hi all
The link below is for a text file of 220 P-3 lines that will cover any P-3 drawing for a guaranteed box or straight win.
My question is this, is it better to play straight, box, straight-box for these games? In testing it seems box gives the
lowest ROI and in all my test it looses money. To generate the list below I used a full wheel then ran them through
a line optimizer filter. The resulting lines will win a either box or straight regardless if the draw is a single, double
or triple.

Here are the results of a 30 day backtest based on a $.50/$.50 box/straight play.

In the back-test above I had 12 straight and 18 box hits playing the 220 lines. drawing dates 04/04/17 4-1-1
to 03/20/17 7-4-2. Here if I had played $1.00 straight I would have won 12*600=$7200.00 vs $5550.00 playing
box straight.

At first I thought that this was just a fluke but the larger the number of test ran, the lower box hits performed.

Notice the ROI and how it decreases for each test. From this data I would think if a person plays box
or box/straight then they are going to loose more then playing straight. This test does not take into
consideration a players ability to pick better numbers but since the list of 220 lines will produce a win
every drawing it seems logical, IMHO.

The payout for boxed is normally lower than for straight.
If you play boxed, it is like playing at roulette, two rows with one chip, only at pick 3 you get much much much ... much less.

Yesterday, 2-1-4 midday
My co-worker had
214 $1.00 straight= $600.00-
214 $1.00 1- off,= $300.00
214 $1.00 box= $100.00
Total winnings, on one draw= $1,000.00
For the 1- off ticket, $1.00, she only won $300.00 vs. If she played it $1.00 str/box, she would have won $350.00.
The 1-off ticket is $1.00 , you have to play $1.00, you can not play 50 cent on 1-off game.
So, you will not win on the number being box, just straight, or 1-off.
I"m running a number 10 x's straight, one draw, midday.
650.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply, I am new to the daily games but plan to make them my main play.
Playing one line and covering all the possible outcomes looks like a smarter way to go.
Right now I am playing on paper and playing up to 5 lines for $1.00 bet or 10 lines if
using the $.50 option. I am trying to figure out the best betting strategy but I never
even considered what your co-worker is doing. Do you find midday easier to analyze?
I have been working with on the evening game as it better fits my schedule.
Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Good Luck with evening drawings.
I haven't been up to date on the evening drawings lately.
I have been on midday.
I"m looking for the front pair 65x to hit, it has been out almost max.
I play, front pair, back pair, on pick 3.
Str/box mainly.
Good Luck.

I think this is proof positive that to come out ahead one has to be very good at picking numbers/digits.
We would have to reduce the play lines by half or more to make a profit. Anytime we play fewer than
the 220 for pick-3 we risk loosing the entire wager. It's a close bet overall with as we can expect to win
the 5-39 once for every 575757 plays. If we play P-3 we could expect to win 575 times for the same bet.
Pick-3 would pay 575*600=$345000 vs the average jackpot of $142000 for the 5-39.
lower level prizes for 5-39. (Results are rounded)
Match-4 = 1 in 3387. 575757/3387=170 *250=$42500
Match-3 = 1 in 103. 575757/103=5590*10=$55900
Match-2 = 1 in 10. 575757/10 = $57576
Total expected lower level prizes=$155976 and the average 5-39 JP $142000
Total expected = 5-39, $297976 = ROI of 51.7%
Total expected = P-3, $345000 = ROI of 59.9%
Pick-3 straight is the better of the two but both still loose overall. This shows us what math says about the
games. We are going to loose big unless we can improve our number/digit selections.

Finally somebody offered a different outlook on Pick 3 than pyramid or other multiplying moo by foo and dividing by boo to extract poo strategy which always remind me of juggling zeros in any possible logical or mathematical way hoping that somehow, somewhere, someday they will sum up to 1. Some time ago one frustrated LP member called these strategies "a dozen a dime" but I think he over-inflated the price.
Back to the topic - you have an interesting approach to consistent winning Pick 3. You are the one of very few LP members that seriously consider ROI in playing lottery. Great majority of others never mention that aspect of playing so I assume they want to just win something no matter what the cost. Which is not difficult to achieve in Pick 3 as your examples illustrate - making money consistently (positive ROI) is.
Although your backtracks show negative ROI I believe that your system has a real potential. Here are the reasons.
There are 2 ways of improving your ROI:1. Increasing your winnings by improving straight-to-box ratio (more straight wins at the cost of boxes). Unfortunately, I don't think you can control this feature - you can't line-up numbers as they are drawn in certain order. So this option is out.
2. Reducing the cost of playing. You have full control over this one. Which brings us to the issue of TARGETING.
In my analysis I discard triples as statistically insignificant and concentrate on singles (6-way) and doubles (3-way) only. Statistically they constitute 72% (singles) and 27% (doubles) of all possible draws. These are also averages but, as you observe real lottery draws, these averages seldom occur in a given period of time (I usually consider 30-draw periods). There can be truly wild swings in this area - in 14 draws not a single double or in the same time span singles and doubles split 50-50; I've seen both.
As your backtracks indicate playing for both singles & doubles at the same time is a loosing scheme. It just costs too much. You have to start targeting to reduce the cost: singles alone or singles and doubles together but only when appropriate. That's a matter of judgement. But trends in the type of draw for the nearest future are not that difficult to predict - try to compile some stats for that to see for yourself.
I don't believe that analysing past trends is of much use. They may happen again but timing them in the future is impossible. Much easier to observe what's happening now and base your strategy on this.
Targeting, however, comes with risk. You don't cover all possibilities any more, so there will be misses. I consider this a cost of doing business - playing lottery in this case. As long as the benefits of cost reduction outweigh the risks this is the strategy to go. How do I evaluate this one? Three rules: backtrack, backtrack, backtrack. They are the only ones to tell you where you are heading.
In your system you consider combinations from all 10 Pick 3 numbers. In my approach I reduced this to 8 - I create my straight or box combos from only 8 numbers. The risk is that if only 1 number falls outside my 8 I'm straight (not to mention box) looser. 8 numbers wheeled for box (either single or double) require only 56 combos.
Statistical average for hitting 3 in 8 is 51.2%. But real life is seldom average. I've been running a Wisconsin Pick 3 simulation since November last year. I use 6 different number prediction methods. I've seen weeks in which every draw was a winner but also had weeks with 1-2 wins for different methods. As I stated before, what should be played is a matter of judgement - and misses are expected as part of playing.
So my advice to you is - try to simulate only singles and only doubles separately and see what results you come up with. Would be interesting to see, particularly the ROI.

When I was living in a state that did not have a Keno game I looked at playing the pick 3 and 4 games and abandoned the idea after about 6 months of work. The reward wasn't worth the effort. I pretty much stay away from the pick 5 games for the same reasons.
The problem I kept running into was the issue that you are experiencing. Every model that I worked through involved putting so much money into the game that even in the cycles that were winners I was barely covering my investment during that cycle much less the money that I would have lost in the off cycles.
Something else to keep in mind is that in some states the midday drawing is electronic and the night drawing is the traditional method.

If I may offer an opinion, I think placing too much emphasis on ROI can take the fun out playing the lottery.
In my way of thinking, the only people who will win more than they lose are folks who win a couple of thousand playing a game like Texas Two-Step where the jackpot begins at $200,000 and rolls until won.
I've been trying to win that jackpot for a long time, with less than spectacular results. I will, of course, keep trying.
Some would say I should give it up because of the poor ROI but gambling is entertainment and I have a lot of free time and I only risk what I can afford to lose.
Regarding the daily number games.
I recently won $5,200 playing Texas Daily 4.
Even so, I've been in the lottery for 10+ years, so, my overall ROI is in the toilet, so to speak.
But, quitting is not an option.
I read with interest what people are saying about how to win in lottery.
In my opinion. 95% of it is mostly bull crap.
According to a recent post by BobP, there are two components to lottery play - mathematical and holistic.
Although the vast majority of players use a mathematical-based workout, and are losing lots of money, that are non-predictive. That is, despite what is being said over and over and over again, such workouts have no way of knowing the future.
"No man or machine can know in advance exactly what the NEXT winning combination will be."
The problem with mathematical models, in my opinion, is that use of such methods implies that there is some mathematical action occurring in the lottery drawing machines.
Players seem to forget that the machines have no memory.
Despite the fact that each drawing is a separate event having no connection with past or future drawings, many players use 'phantom mathematics' to guide their lottery play.
It seems that 'chance' and 'coincidence' is hardly ever considered.
The holistic approach is one where various data bases that identify and track various game features are used to guide lottery integer selections using the 'follower' concepts.
The various trend data follower lines or strings are analyzed to find the best answers to the multiple What's Next questions.
Yes, it's educated guesswork.
Again, the vast majority of lottery players who post their so-called winning methods analyze a game 'en masse' or the game as whole.
Analyzing the behavior of 37 balls in Texas Cash 5 game is a good example of the 'en masse' approach.
After many years of trial and error, I concluded that the 'en masse' approach is probably the worst method one can use.
There are just too many possibilities; too many false clues; too many dead-end pathways.
Here is some information regarding the 'holistic' method I use for all the games I play.Texas Pick 3There are four drawings per day.
The drawings are separate events.
I play the Saturday Evening drawing using a method I call Substitution Workout with Gap Strategy.
This method requires the game to be divided into 5 major components.
Game History
Alpha Doubles
Main A (digits 1, 2 and 3)
Main B (digits 4,5 and 6)
Main C (digits 7.8.9.0)
Each Main has a Rap Sheet where previous results are tracked. The function of the Game History chart is to use the winning integers to break the game into trackable results known as Alpha and Numerical Signatures.
There are a fixed number of Alpha Doubles (Double A, B, C and R; Triple A, B, C, R; and four Singles (A, B, C, R)A full Alpha Double explanation would require more time and effort that I care to use at this juncture.Using only the game history for the Saturday Evening drawing, I've decided that the best Alpha Double is Double C.
There are four Numerical Signatures, and 10 Alpha Signatures for Double C.
I would use the Numerical Signatures to guide my integer selections for Box only plays.
With ROI in mind, I will use 4 of Alpha Signatures:CCA (2 integers from Main C, 1 integer from Main A)
CCB (2 integers from Main C, 1 integer from Main B)
CCR (2 integers from Main C, integer Zero)
CAB (1 integer from Main C, 1 from Main A and 1 from Main B)Using the tracking charts and follower strings in each Main, I have chosen the integers listed below.CCA - 872
CCB - 875
CCR - 870
CAB - 825
I usually bet .50 cents Box and Exact on the doubles
I usually bet $1 both ways on the Single.
Total cost - $5.I usually don't bet on double and triple integer combinations because there are no reliable clues on when they will arrive. It goes without saying that I've not provided a full description of a substitution workout.
There are many interrelated follower lines that contain valuable clues that provide good answers to the What's Next questions.
All I will say is that none of the following methods apply.
No algorithms, no mathematical formulae, no probability, no percentages, no odds, no evens, no highs, no lows, no heads, no tails, no roots, no canals, no pairs, no triples, no vtracs, no statistical charts, no Excel, no complex software. It all boils down to following specific rules of procedure to generate tracking charts that, in turn, provide rational follower strings.
I use my experience and intellect to find the clues that will guide the guesswork and provide winning integers - some of the time. You can't ask for more than that.
Thanks for your attention and interest. -
Thanks for the replies, my initial analysis begins with the matrix regardless of the method of reduction,
know your enemy. It's always a good idea to know what the expected is as I have found that in a fair
game the history will mimic the matrix very closely. One of the most dependable observations IMHO is
that the numbers fall into one of three states, waxing, full and waning just like the moon.
Some like playing longest out and the logic has it's merits but most all drawings have a little bit of everything.
It's rare to see all hot, cold etc.. show in a single game. Here is a pic of a positional lexical order tracking
program for my 5-39. It's not too hard to nail a couple digits within a small pool but the rest are close to
unknowable. We do what we can and hope for the best.

I won a small JP back when I first got involved in the lottery so I will never go in the hole so to say but
the difference for me is that while I play for entertainment I don't consider myself a gambler. I hate to
loose a dollar. The entertainment value is similar to hunting for buried treasure. I pour over the data,
look at he maps, build weird tools etc.. and try to decide where to dig next. I have managed to come
out on top for many years not counting the JP win due to 2nd level prizes but most would be surprised
if they knew how little I actually live-play. On average I would say less than 30 games per year. I use
math to help me decide what game to play, not so much to pick the numbers. All we can do is make our
best guess and hope for the best, I still say gut instinct is the best tool we have. Software just makes the
analysis faster which is not always a good thing. Eyes on methods catch things that software never will.
