I got banned from a gas station for taking lottery tickets out of the trash. I found $30 in unclaimed winners last week. The lady had a huge meltdown and threatened to call the cops. I went through it two times before with no problems. It was because I found winners.

No, it was probably because she wanted to get them herself before her shift ended.

Legally speaking the store has custody of the trash from beginning to end. It is still stealing to take items out of the trash. One of the hardest things I had to do was convince employees they could not raid the dumpster for items we had thrown away. Even when stores receive full credit for shop worn items and returns, the vendor does so with the understanding they will be properly disposed of.

That said, I find it hard to accept a store making a fuss over taking lottery tickets out of the trash. Frankly you should take them home for inspection and redeem them at another location. It never hurts to ask while making a purchase where you are the customer making the request, maybe saying you need them for taxes if asked. And finally not making a mess going through the trash. Take a lesson from the people with the metal detectors, never examine your find in public, slip it into your pocket and examine at your leisure.

As you allude later in your post, is that a good description of what they were doing or should it be "rummaging through the garbage"? Or maybe "throwing garbage on the floor." It's well within the store's rights to kick somebody out for neatly and discreetly taking discarded tickets out of the trash, but it's just good business sense to toss somebody who's making a mess or potentially bothering employees or other customers by rummaging in the garbage.

Ewww,I don't know. Don't think I would rummage through garbage. Heck, I yell at the bum who digs through my recycling can on garbage day. Maybe that's mean but that is some nasty business. You never know what's in there.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Another interesting thread which again takes me back to something also very relevant and some will remember. About six years ago, there was much ado over a scratch-off ticket which was thrown away by one lady and found by another lady...in a dumpster. Yeah, she did some dumpster diving which drew critiques and congrats over the general sentiments of 'sanitation.' My personal position was that I could care less about that issue when there was a $1M dollar ticket secured, and, that I'd be willing to risk the uncleanliness to possibly find a ticket worth much less because IT'S FREE. Turns out, though, that such a unique idea from Sharon Duncan who found the ticket turned into high level legal matters over where the ticket was found, who's property the ticket was on, the owner of the dumpster, surveillance, etc. etc. It was all a huge mess of BS simply because this lady found a high dollar ticket...that's it. Had she jumped into that dumpster and found nothing at all, neither the story nor any of the players in that story would've ever even made the news...which is why I called BS on what ensued afterwards.

Man, that lady cashed in the ticket and proceeded to take care of her family and enjoy her winnings...her 'FINDING.' You can Google the story as it took place in Arkansas and I promise that it's make you sick from a moral perspective and you'll then see why the legal perspective was really factored in. You know, it was honestly an old school type of 'finders keepers losers weepers' deal for Sharon Duncan but, it was the other lady who wasn't smart enough to pay close attention and realize that she had a winning ticket in her possession. As a result, the person that took a risk and unknowingly retrieved that winning ticket, ALONG WITH OTHER LOSING TICKETS and realized it was a $1M dollar prize, WAS SUBSEQUENTLY PENALIZED FOR HER HONEST EFFORTS which would've been otherwise viewed as her being nasty and filthy for dumpster diving. Hypocrites from everywhere came out.

Small games, frequent wins, and regular payouts 'cause.....
