Just my two cents but judging from thousands of posts on this board I'd say one of the biggest mistakes lottery players make is assuming they are going to win.

Regardless of the game (any form of gambling) the house is in business because you are supposed to lose.

What do you say?

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Absolutely correct.

Some other mistakes:

Exchanging winning tickets for more tickets (this will double the already high house edge; just take the money and leave the store!)

Using the lottery as your retirement fund

Chasing losses

Spending money on software or books on "how to win"

RE: Chasing losses

We had a player in Vegas who walked right into a monster hand one night. He won over $10,000 on one shooter (craps).

Then he had a conversation with the pit boss where he said he didn't know what to do now. The boss said "Walk". He said he couldn't. He further said he knew how to gt in the game, get stuck and play the rest of the night to get even, but winning right off the bat, no.

He went tapioca.

Very typical.

In the context of Mega Millions . . not paying the extra dollar for the Megaplier (except California).

Around 24 times better odds of a 5+0 win than 5+1 . . and $2-5 million is definitely better that $1 million!

That's because we as humans are hard-wired to think positive. If we or a loved one has cancer, and going under the knife, no one says " see you in heaven." We hoping to come out " okay" for awhile, until we truly are at death's door. Ultimately, we know someone will win, why not think of that someone as us?

I'd say this is kind of a touchy subject in a way because, as noisegate stated, being positive is a requirement for success with anything. However, when it comes to lottery games such as PB and MM's, I think most players maintain a balance of reasonable optimism while still understanding what they're up against. The players doing the most mental damage to themselves are those who are already experiencing financial hardships and look to winning a major JP,right now, as their way out. Then, there's the lotteries and their promotional advertisements which further compound this problem when, in fact, their job is simply to separate that player from their money which the player really needs for something else. Granted, no one is forced to play any lottery game but it's a combination of enticement, beating the odds, and hopefulness that lures us all in. For me, I'm 100% completely satisfied with my small, regular piece of pie. They have their recipe...and I have mine.

Small games, frequent wins, and regular payouts 'cause.....

There are seven days in the week...'Someday' isn't one of them.

After reading about Cheyenne in another post, my gut is telling me that I am in for something good. What could it be, the suspense is killing me. Could it be related to PB tonight? I am going to open the fridge, and reach for a cold one......excuse me!

Biggest mistake is playing the same number every day for months on end. If you play the same number $1 straight and $1 box, two draws a day, after 145 days if you win straight and box you won't even break even.

$4 a day x 145 days = $580 spent.

True but we have to differentiate between thinking positive and flat out dreaming.

People bet something like $3300 to win $200 on Mike Tyson because they were positive he was going to beat Buster Douglas.

Someone with ability who is positive they'll get a contract with a major league team is thinking positive, ok.

An 89 year old who is positive he'll get a contract to play is dreaming.

I think I’m going to win every single time. Win or lose though, if the payouts surpass the spending, it doesn’t matter, because then you aren’t losing in the bigger picture. Just gotta catch them sleeping.

Sometimes you do the right thing just because it’s right.

Life's a game of mathematics, if you can't figure that out I don't know what to tell you.
