I decided to purchase MegaMillions and Powerball tickets from a gas station that's in a small town right off of a two lane highway as a way of supporting them over the busier/bigger retailers in the city. I went in, didn't buy anything else, I said I wanted to purchase lottery tickets and started with a MegaMillions ticket for "ten consecutive drawings" with the megaplier and that it would be $30. She then moves over to the lottery screen and looks it at pressing buttons, doesn't ask me to clarify anything. She has the ticket in her hand and then I said "same for powerball". I also bought a $1 state lotto ticket after that. She had the tickets in her hand and I exchanged $61 for the ticket. Then as I was driving away I thought I should check them to make sure there were 10 draws on each.

Well she printed one draw for megamillions and powerball with 10 plays each.

I was thinking I should have made it more clear to her though I did say "ten consecutive drawings" and something like 10 in a row or 10 draws in a row.

Still, she didn't ask for clarification to confirm it before printing so I didn't even think anything of it.

Even if I saw them before handing the money I would have purchased them because "what if" though I feel wronged and cheated. If it was like $10 or less no big deal though $54 extra in plays is ridiculous. I could have filled up my gas tank again and bought a nice meal out there for that much.

Basically I feel like $54 was stolen from me. It's their responsibility to understand how to use the machine that's in front of them everyday all day and if they don't know what a draw is and what consecutive means then they should ask for clarification before pressing buttons.

There's no point in contacting the gas station as I won't be doing business with them again though I will contact the state lottery office.

There's always that what if it was deliberate too. Maybe she didn't like the fact that I was coming in to spend $30+ on lottery and not buy anything else or it could have been complete ignorance.

No, actually, you are at fault twice. You should have used a bet slip, especially if you're doing multiple draws. Secondly, You should have asked for the first ticket once it was printed. I know a lot of clerks who aren't up to date on how to use some machines. But that being said, It is your responsibility to be sure they understood you. I'm afraid the State Lottery office is going to tell you the same thing.

Lesson learned, just use the bet slip whenever you play. You can only blame yourself then.

I'm not at fault. I shouldn't have to use a bet slip on quick pick.

I could say what I should have done all day. I should have made it more clear and had her clarify it with me as she was pressing buttons on the machine. I should have brought in an example of a ticket.

If I asked for something in plain english then I should get that from the retailer. If I was in a foreign country I could understand there maybe being confusion. If you order a chocolate milkshake you shouldn't get a vanilla one.

I could have screwed her out of a whole days pay though I'm not like that.

It's their responsibility to give me what I asked for. I used the exact wording that is on the state lotterys website which is "consecutive draws".

I think after the first one printed she realized she screwed up big time though didn't want to bring it to my attention. Now thinking back the look on her face would explain that. That's also probably why she put the $1 state lotto one on top.

I said "ten consecutive draws" and that's not what was printed. That does not make me at fault.

Tough break. Its always risky for a big MM or PB purchase. Really should be illegal to play that many games in advance. Especially if there is no SOP to cancel tickets. There should be a 30 minute window to cancel tickets, except of course on draw nights. With all the sophisticated AI computing, and cameras everywhere, it should not be such a big deal to cancel. You could for instance have a 30 minute window on draw nights, if they pushed back the draw time to midnight on saturday, or if they moved up the cutoff time. Personally I boycott Mega Millions and PB and C4L, and any other game that cost two bucks, except when the JP get to over 800 million. Then I feel foolish for not at least trying my JEETKUNEDOLOTTO methodology!

This is totally on point. Anytime I make any purchase that is more than just the straightforward one PB or one MM QP, I use a bet slip to make sure it is done correctly. And I check the ticket before leaving. Technically the $54 was not wasted because the person got $54 worth of tickets, just not advance plays as they had hoped.

Most players use play slips when playing multiple drawings and if they don't they usually go to a store where they know the clerks or a store that is experienced in selling lottery ticket.

Let me get this straight, you bought $61 worth of lottery tickets and never checked them before leaving the store?

MM and PB tickets are not refundable in many states and exactly why most experienced clerks require play slips. If anything the clerk was wrong for not making you use a play slip, but the all the rest is your fault.

Almost every store you go to has Printed Signs in front of the machine... You must fill out a Playslip to play the Lottery...

Take responsibility for your error -> It is up to YOU to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. I NEVER leave without checking my tickets. Clerks are human, and as such, they DO make mistakes, just as you did by not checking your tickets sooner.

So many people these days are refusing to take responsibility for their own actions, and are quick to blame someone else when things go wrong.

You leave, discover the error, and then assume maybe the clerk did it on purpose, or is she just plain ignorant. You never even gave the clerk a chance to make things right!

I'd have to check the play slips for this state though I was not aware that they were used for quick pick multiple draws. I thought it was only for picking your own numbers.

Well first off even if I saw the misprinted ticket first I would have bought it because what if. That would have just been $27 over instead of $54.

The draws haven't occurred yet so if I win over my money back then it won't matter.

Here's where I have the issue of you saying it's my fault:

If I had not ever played lottery before, could even have been traveling from out of state as that place exists because of travelers, or from out of the country let's say Canada, and I visited the state lottery website first that states:

PURCHASE MEGA MLLIONS FOR MULTIPLE DRAWINGS
You can buy a ticket for up to ten consecutive drawings

So then if it was my first time buying a lottery ticket and I said to the clerk, based on what the state lottery website gives me as an option:

"I would like a megamillions ticket for ten consecutive drawings"

how does it become my fault if the ticket(s) are misprinted?

I couldn't walk away from that personally. I wouldn't want that to be the one that wins and have turned it away. Also that's like a days pay for her so I'd feel bad to walk out knowing she would or the store would, which would come back to her, have to pay that money.

I feel like you all are siding with the clerk because you feel bad for her.

About using a payslip. The lotterys website states:

Quick Pick your numbers by letting the computer select or play your own lucky numbers using a playslip available wherever Lottery is sold.

Nowhere does the lottery website suggest or indicate that a payslip can be used for quickpick or should be used for quickpick multiple draws.

I think you have one of the most level headed replies that's not rude accusative of me.

It's kind of a strange or awkward system of business, especially when you're talking up to $30 for one ticket.

You go in, tell the clerk what you want, they print it before taking your money, once it's printed it's non-refundable and someone has to pay. I don't think multiple draw purchases are that common that most clerks even know what that is.

If someone wanted to they could go somewhere, ask for a $30 ticket and walk out saying that's not what they asked for just to screw the business over. Once it's printed that money has to be paid by the retailer to the state lottery office less I think 1% in sales commission they get.

user34, I am NOT saying the clerk did nothing wrong. You both made errors during the transaction. The clerk, for not verifying what it was you were asking for, you for not knowing how the play slips work, and you for not checking your tickets before leaving the store. If you would have given the clerk a chance to fix the error, there would be no issue here. Humans make mistakes, but some refuse to see their mistakes, and they simply put ALL the blame elsewhere, which is what I see here.

I'm sorry if you feel I am being rude and insensitive, but I just don't see how this whole transaction is the clerk's fault. I always, always, use a play slip. That way there are no misunderstandings. Easy peasy. Hand the playslip to the clerk, they put it in the machine, out come the tix.

That clerk could not care less if you bought anything else in the store or not. That clerk makes 8 bucks an hour regardless of what you buy.

Lesson learned for you.
