Here's the setup for the poll: From the first time you ever heard of the lottery to today, would you consider your experience with the lottery to have been for the Better or Worse? You don't even have to play, if merely thinking about winning allowed you to engage in flights of fancy on the wings of daydreams to escape for a moment your drab retched existence, that's better, right? Maybe you won enough or often enough to make things better. Don't suppose I need describe the possible worse outcomes, thank you for supporting education.

For me gambling has been like a religion. What I mean by that is we believe that by believing in a higher power and being a good person, some day we will be rewarded with paradise, heaven, etc. Playing the lottery for me hasn't been great to be honest but I can't stop now after having invested so much time, money and effort. I'm still hoping for a big, big win. Just like heaven, the jackpot would be heaven for me.

I enjoy trying to 'figure out ' what will come out and then being rewarded with money!!

It is a challenge, like any game, watch and learn use simple or complex calculations to achieve a set of numbers to try out, wait with anticipation for the results that can be: happy returns or a loss that will help create,make changes for the next draw.

I never thought of playing the lottery as "for better or for worse". It's a hobby. I've been playing for close to 40 years. I used to study numbers, patterns, etc. Now, I mostly just play QP's. Played Pick 3, Pick 4, Lotto, MM, PB, Cash 5, just about any game available. Now I've cut back some, but will always play something. Just to dream about maybe that one ticket being "the one"!

JUST LOOK AT THE ODDS OF ANY JACKPOT GAME, THAT WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

I am right there with rcbbuckeye on this one. Entertainment purposes only. Mostly scratchers with the PB, MM and LA. My big purchase for the year is when I purchase a full pack of $2 tickets for the Mrs and I to scratch off @ Xmas eve.

That "what if" factor the day my numbers come in always brings a good feeling of what I could do to help a number of people and certain organizations.

Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.

Had to vote 50/50 on this one. I know enough to never bet more than I can afford to lose, and I do play for the fun of it. So you'd think I wouldn't get frustrated when I lose. (which is more often than I win) But there are times when I get so frustrated by playing that I tell myself I'm never gonna play again!

A few weeks ago, I moved to Florida and started playing Fantasy5. I won a free ticket here and there but not many of them. Then last Saturday I won three free tickets. So played them on Sunday night. I awoke Monday morning looking at a ticket that had four numbers on the first of my three free lines. I won $88.50! So now that I'm playing for free for the next week or so, I'm having fun again! G5

Play Smart! That's IF there is such a thing as playing smartly!!

Definitely better, only because of The Lottery Post and the members here that continuously post workouts and provide their wisdom for playing styles. Keeps me thinking in new dimensions.

I voted 50 /50, mostly because of some self expressed 'geniuses' I've met.......

One example is a guy who told me he hit 317 straight 26 times one year (all in the same state), I guess he either forgot or didn't know results are posted on the internet.

Then threre are those who rant a rave about certain facts that are facts in their minds only.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

IMO most real lottery tickets are purchased hoping to win a large jackpot. If a player never won a 6 figure or more jackpot, a nice secondary prize, or even made more than they spent, can't see why they would say their experience was better than expected. If they never won prizes over $1000, their experience should be much worse than expected. And there are people that just play for the fun of it; maybe looking for spot play systems and even though they don't win a huge jackpot get a rush out of picking and hitting a pick 3 or 4 number.

I guess it all depends on what players expect.

I have had way more success in a casino over the years than lotto but for the last seven years I have been low rolling on lotto tickets for state and multi-state games and little to no casino. It is cheaper to play lotto a little here and their then try to go to a casino and win with few dollars. I like to look at jackpots and think what if so I play Oregon megabucks and Powerball and Mega millions for fun to just think it could be me or someone else. Since turning 21 in 1996 my prizes for Powerball are $100 once and Oregon megabucks I have hit four numbers with kicker a couple of times for around $200 or less and mega millions my prizes have been less than $50. I have won thousands in casinos like a couple of thousand over 10 times but it took me on average $300 or more to hit it so I play the lotto and save what little money I have. I guess when I was younger I was more willing to lose to win and now I think of better things to spend my money on like bills and my mother. I like to play though so my experience is positive and I enjoy playing for big jackpots.-weshar75

The difference I find with the casino playing slots is the ability to walk away while winning. Have to put so much in, and then things tilt the other way and I'm up a hundred or two, time to walk away or lose it back and then some. When playing the lottery the lower prizes are too small to be attractive as they were in the day. The Florida Fantasy Five roll down is a grand, which would be great if not for the government entanglements collecting plus taxes. Would have been better if they made it $500 like the Pick-3. Anyway, with lottery the choice is to play or not to play today, rather then win and walk away, once played I have to consider the money lost.

Not questioning your case example. Have often been surprised by people who didn't know they could buy the same number more then once per draw. Even had cashiers point out to me I was playing the same number again. Not adverse to putting $10 on a number, though it takes ten play slips to get ten separate tickets . . . then they start trying to explain how to play.

I too think most players are hoping to win a large prize, me included. But when I play PowerBall, but I hardly ever know what the advertised jackpot amount happens to be. I buy the PowerPlay option hoping to have five numbers and win 2 million.

You're right too about a players expectations. I love winning just about any cash prize, but I dont ever expect to win anything. G5

About 15 years ago the Ohio Lottery added a "multiple times" type option to their play slips. Watching the expression on the clerk's face when the terminal kept printing tickets was priceless. Not sure if they still have that option.
