I live in a state where you can play Powerball and Mega Millions. However, the state I live in does not allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. There are two neighboring states that allow anonymity for lottery winners. But one state is an hour and half away. The other state is over 2 hours away from me. Here is my question. Is it worth driving to either state to play a large number of lottery tickets with those odds for the sake of remaining anonymous?

Smart lottery winners form trust to claim their winnings. They send an attorney to the lottery headquarters to claim the prize in trust, so that ONLY the name of the trust is revealed. And they tell NO ONE, especially relatives.

If you ever win a lottery and you are single, the only person you should ever marry is someone who was truly in love with you BEFORE you won the jackpot!

People can talk about strategies and gimmicks all they want, but unless your ticket actually matches at least 5 of those 6 balls, you are just another person who tried to win a game yet ultimately failed.

It might be worth it if you're buying enough that your chances of winning the jackpot are non-negligible, really it depends on the person.

If you bought 1,000 Powerball tix (all different combos), your odds of hitting the jackpot would be 1 in 292,201. This is roughly the same as the odds of winning a Cash Five type game that uses fewer than 35 balls. Meh, as Larry David might say.

But if you bought 10,000 tix, your odds of hitting the jackpot would be 1 in 29,220. Are those good enough odds to make the trip worth it? I think if you're spending that much money it is probably worth it to drive to a better state.

If you do win have to pay taxes in both states State an Federal. I lived in Missouri an Kansas worked in Oklahoma at a Casino taxed twice.

Is a trust or llc an option in your state? Check the pinned state list in the Jackpot topic. If yes, then you can possibly be "anonymous"

I live in Oregon and you can not claim anonymously here but if I win a jackpot in my lifetime I would just deal with the consequences.-weshar75

Maybe get your large pool of tickets and get the multi-draw option so you don't have to drive back as often to the other state?

If you did hit big it would be a nice option.

Picking up an advanced draw for the maximum allowed, is a great option. Having a moving plan to a rental a few days before you collect could be an alternative, even something as simple as a campground lot.

I think someone claimed the prize as a LLC in my state, but that person only won a million dollars not the jackpot. I suppose if that happened with a million prize, it could be done with a jackpot with an attorney who is experienced with trusts. Honestly, I would rather just play in a state whereas I could be anonymous without relinquishing control of my prize to an attorney.

That would be a good idea. However, I like to focus on the upcoming drawing when I play whether it be quick picks or selected numbers.

According to stories I have read over the years, a lot of people who actually win the jackpot play the lottery consistently. Even if I drove to a neighboring state and bought 250 Powerball tickets once a month and spent $500, I could end up losing hundreds of dollars. But at least, if I spent $20 every drawing, I would have my hand in every drawing.

Yep, if we win in a state with no state tax or less than the tax rate in your home state, we'll get a bill for the difference. And add to the number of people knowing the winner's name.

If someone used a LLC for a million dollar prize and stayed anonymous, then a larger jackpot should allow the same option.

You are not relinquishing control of the money with a llc or trust. The attorney has a temporary power of attorney to claim the money on your behalf. You are in control of the money.

Trusts or llcs are not always an option depending on the state law and /or lottery precedent.
