Thank you, JustMaybe. Yes, I know how very close I came to walking through that door. I also know that what caused my heart attack was a chunk of plaque tearing loose inside my arteries and lodging in my heart. That could very, very easily have led to a stroke at the same time as the heart attack. I dodged multiple bullets that day.
On that day, after my wife got me settled into the cardiac ICU, she went home to take care of the dogs. Soon after she left, a nurse came in and told me that the 2 main arteries in my heart were blocked and the cath doc had tried everything to get them open, but no luck. I was a candidate for double bypass. She said the docs would be in soon to tell me what to expect. Docs came in looking serious and the main one said we thought we'd do a double bypass but looking at the numbers, you wouldn't survive it, your heart is too 'hot' from the damage. Best chance is take you back down to cath lab and try again to open up an artery. Do you want to try that? Of course I said yes. He told the nurse to bring me a phone, told me to call my wife and said make sure you tell her you love her. Then he gave me a look that said he wasn't 100% sure I'd be coming back upstairs. So I called my wife, trying not to alarm her and then back downstairs we go.
So when they thread the probe up through me I said a little prayer. God if you're ready to take me home, I'm ready, but if you're not done with me yet, please let this work. At that moment, the doc said, Hey would you look at that! The one artery that was completely blocked is now completely open!
A half hour earlier it had been blocked so badly he couldn't get through it, but I got my miracle. If you know anything about plaque blockages, they're a bit like cement and it is very unlikely one would just disappear. He placed a stent, sewed me up, and 15 minutes later I was back in my room telling my wife it had worked. I've never done particularly well with my lottery bets, but on that day, I was the luckiest guy on Earth! Blessed indeed and extremely grateful.
