winning the lottery is probably the one instance where i would definitely not ask a friend for a recommendation. they might get suspicious about why.

I would spend a little money interviewing four or five tax/estate lawyers for some diverse opinions, check what they say against what I can find out on my own.

I would do something similar with financial advisors, diving investment assets between, depending on the amount to be invested among five to ten fiduciary groups and narrowing by choosing the best performers with their assigned portfolios.

Be careful doing that. Jason Kurland, the "Lottery Lawyer," embezzled over 107 million from his clients. It's better to get a CPA instead IMHO.

As I have said before, one can be ripped off by anyone in any profession.

And research would have shown Jason had no red flags. That is why one should stick with larger old line firms that have more liability insurance if anyone goes rogue.

And if a winner is lazy and turns over sole control of your assets to anyone with you having no access, my sympathy is limited. If you make it easy for anyone to cheat you, you take some of the blame.

The lottery recommending an attorney does not guarantee you anything.

Do not go to the strip mall attorney and be sure to check out the state bar membership of the attorney.

Jason did have a red flag right off the bat. He looked sketchy. On YouTube there is an interview with him about three years before his arrest and a Poster commented,"Jason looks like a snake. I wouldn't trust him with my lottery winnings." The Poster came back tthree years later and said "Jason's just been arrested for embezzling over 107 millions. I knew three years ago that he looked like a snake and I wouldn't trust him with my lottery winnings. My gut feeling about him was 100 percent spot on."

he looked sketchy to you, and a random youtube comment said he looked snaky.

you wouldn't be the first poster to put too much stock in youtube comments (https://www.lotterypost.com/thread/340530) but it doesn't seem like the red flags were so obvious at the very beginning.

Making decisions on what a person looks like is not very logical. Now I would have seen the red flags once I met him and he started to steer me to certain investments since that is not his role. I would have reported him to his state bar. With that reasoning, you are likely to be taken advantage of since the person "looks ok." Managing money requires one to be alert 24/7 and double checking things constantly.

When looking for a financial lawyer, red flags in a contract include fee padding, blanket liability releases, and forced arbitration clauses. These terms can strip away your rights or cost you unexpected money.

TBF, several of those people advertising for various financial companies on TV (Fisher etc) don't exactly look trustworthy.

Kind of true. Well the typical east coast male attorney is often bald or balding, thin and not the best looking guys.

But potential clients need to pay attention to what the attorney says in order to evaluate him or her.

And we have a few lp conspiracy driven members who honestly are not in a position to evaluate any attorney. Walking into any attorney interview and talking gibberish and ranting how she or he may cheat you is going to make an honest attorney decline representation.
