I want to describe how I play now, because it is different from how I played for the first fifteen years, and I am curious how many people here have ended up in the same place.
I used to pick numbers. Dates, ages, the usual. Then I would look at the ticket and have no idea why those five numbers and not five others. There was no reasoning to review, so there was nothing to improve, and nothing to change except my mood.
Now I pick patterns instead. Before I look at a single number I decide the shape the line has to have, and then I generate the lines that satisfy that shape and play those. In practice the shape comes down to a few rules — how many numbers must be divisible by a chosen value, how the line spreads across the columns and rows of the slip, whether it takes anything from the hot list — but the specific rules matter less than the order of operations. The constraints come first. The numbers come out of them.
That order is the whole point. Picking numbers is a guess about the next draw. Deciding a pattern is a choice about the kind of line I want to hold, and a choice is something I can write down, review after a hundred draws, and change on purpose. A guess is not.
To be clear about what this does and does not do, since this is the wrong forum to be vague about it: it does not improve my odds of hitting the jackpot. Nothing does. Every combination is equally likely and a filtered line is exactly as likely as a quick pick. What changes is which combination I hold — and since the prize is divided among everyone holding it, holding a line that few other people hold is worth something real.
The second thing it changes is harder to measure but I think it matters more. Left to myself I play the same numbers out of habit, and habit is what makes a hobby expensive. A pattern I set deliberately breaks that without requiring any discipline from me.
So the question I want to put to the room: for those of you playing a rule set rather than fixed numbers — do you re-set your constraints before each draw, or fix one pattern and run it for months? I have done both and I still cannot tell which one is the mistake.
