VD,
I have been in pools before. Before I retired, I was it a pool at work and the biggest problem wasn't trust, because we made copies of the tickets and every member had a copy. Three times we matched 5 of 6 when Ohio paid more than it does now and the problem was who would collect and pay the taxes, because unless we won the jackpot, only one person could collect the winnings. We all were working in a skilled trade and getting a lot of overtime and chances were who ever collected the money would own more the the 28% the state kept for taxes. We decided to pay $150 to the kid of a member of the pool who was a college student with job to collect the money and pay the taxes, then when he filed his tax returns (parents and students get double deductions) he would get a refund which would help with the cost for his education and no one in the pool would have to pay extra taxes. Some members were mad becuase their kids weren't chosen. After I retired, the Powerball had several large jackpots and some of my former associates asked if I would pick up some tickets for their pools and I would be included for making the trip, I picked up some tickets for myself and when I returned home nobody could be found to deliver the tickets to. I would afraid that the pools would not get copies of their tickets and if I won the jackpot with my tickets, they would think I won it with their tickets. One of those time the pool wanted to wheel $500 worth of numbers, I and another friend spent over a hours making out and checking 100 tickets since you can only put 5 combinations on a ticket.
Now that I think about it, I'm not going to join a pool because my friends would think since I'm retire I should make out the tickets, collect the money, get photo copies of the tickets and distribute them to each members and devide any winnings. When I matched 5 of 6 this past April, I had to pay the bank a $10 service fee and no taxes was collect, I'll be getting a 1099G in January to file with my tax return. It would just be too much work if I got stucked with running the pool.
