As we all know, Powerball and Megamillions are the two major lotteries in the U.S.  Currently 26 states, Washington DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands participate in PB for a combined population base of 89,837,322 people.  Although only 11 states currently participate in Megamillions, the combined population base of those states is 118,261,168!  The largest state not currently participating in either PB or Mega is California with a population of 35,484,453.  Next would be Florida at 17,019,068

Odds of winning Powerball=1 in 120,526,770

Odds of winning Megamillions=1 in 135,145,920

Which game would you feel your chances of winning would be better?

Correctly pick 5/53 for $100,000 in PB, then 1-42 for Jackpot

Correctly pick 5/52 for $175,000 in Mega, then 1-52 for Jackpot

That tells us that Powerball either needs to reduce the matrix, or increase the lower prizes (maybe match 5 would equal $200K?).

I've redone my website.  Go to www.dr-ew.com.  I kept a lot of the old stuff, and I've added some new stuff.  Look for more new stuff in the coming weeks.

If your definition of winning is matching all 6 numbers, then it is obvious. 120 million is less than 135 million, therefore Powerball is easier to "win".

        Good luck,
        Jake

California is listed as a Musl member but I wonder why they don't offer Powerball to Californians?

I agree with Jake649. Its a no brainer, Powerball is the better bet. The second place prizes and odds, they both stink. Your better off spending a buck on your local state pick 5 game.

Example, Pa Cash 5 with a starting jackpot of 100K and odds of 575,757 looks good compared to the two big jackpot games.

True...Powerball offers a better "chance" of hitting the jackpot, however, Megamillions offers the better chance of getting 5/52 as opposed to 5/53 for Powerball.  For the purpose of this discussion, I'd say "winning" is matching the 5 white balls for the 2nd prize, and of course the jackpot.  I agree that if one's goal is to at least  match 5, then it would be wise to also play your states pick/5 game, as the odds of hitting all 5 are much less than either PB or Mega.  One thing I wanted to point out in the figures is that w/o doing basic research, one would think Megamillions would give a better chance of winning since fewer states participate, but obviously that is not true.  If anyone that plays both games was under that impression, or played one over the other, then that person will now know the facts.

California joined MUSL for the sole intention of joining an international game, since MUSL was very close to starting one.  The plans fell through last year, but they will probably get resurrected at some point.

I guess they don't need powerball with how big their Super lottery can get.

i think that CA just makes the estimates up so that they can boost sales. they have such a high starting jackpot so they won't need to go multi-state.
