Carlos Santana has stunned not only his fans but also his drummer girlfriend, Cindy Blackman, during his concert in Tinley Park, Illinois, on Friday, July 9. The 62-year-old legendary guitarist proposed to Blackman onstage.

According to Santana's representatives, he asked Blackman's hand in marriage four songs into the gig after Blackman's drum solo on his track "Corazon Espinado". The 50-year-old drummer said yes and the newly-engaged couple sealed it with a kiss which was welcomed with cheers from the crowd.

"Cindy and I are blessed to have found each other. Being in love is a gift from the universe, and the spirit and vibrations that come with it are infinitely powerful," Santana said through a statement to MTV News. "I look forward to expressing that incredible energy through my music, and in helping to tip the balance toward more love in the world with what Cindy and I share."

Carlos Santana was previously married to Deborah King, the daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist Saunders King, in 1973. Together, the then-couple has three children, Salvador, Stella and Angelica. They ended their marriage in 2007.

How many more majors for Rafa?

How many more majors for Rafa?

Rafael Nadal

AP Photo/Anja NiedringhausBattered, but not beaten: Can Rafael Nadal continue winning Slams despite his physical style?

As he held the golden Wimbledon trophy aloft, it was difficult not to notice the frayed, bruised bands of athletic tape wrapped around four fingers on his left hand. That stark juxtaposition of risk and gleaming reward neatly frames the career of Rafael Nadal.

For without the white tape, the unprecedented torque of his magnificent forehand would tear his hand -- not his opponents -- apart. As it is, Nadal's physically demanding game places enormous stress on various joints, especially his knees. At 24, he became the second-youngest man to collect his eighth Grand Slam singles title, but the occasion begs the question: How much longer will Rafa be a viable threat, especially with this violent style of play?

At least a few more months, if his admirers are to be believed. Fewer than 30 minutes after Nadal locked down the rare French Open-Wimbledon double, U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe predicted a triple crown -- meaning, a first-ever win for Rafa at the U.S. Open.

A day later, Patrick's brother John -- a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion -- seconded the notion.

Nadal's matches played

Year Matches
2005 89
2006 71
2007 85
2008 93
2009 80
2010 80*
*Projected total

"Nadal wants to win the U.S. Open so badly," said McEnroe, a fixture on the ATP Champions Tour. "It'd be hard not to pick him at this time, even though he's never won it. The conditions in New York don't suit Nadal so well and he needs to make his body hold up. So I think after Wimbledon he is going to take some time off and get his knees recovered and then maybe not play too many matches before the Open."

The bandwagon effect will be in play this summer as the North American hard-court season concludes at the National Tennis Center. Rafa-mania will reign as Nadal looks to complete his career Grand Slam, but beware of the continuing phenomenon that is Rafatigue.

At Wimbledon, Nadal revealed that he tweaked his left knee in Miami playing against Andy Roddick in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open and skipped Barcelona so he could rehab it. At Wimbledon, his right knee created some issues and Nadal admitted, "I am a little bit scared about the knee."

The U.S. Open, oddly, is the only major Nadal has played every year going back to 2003; he has missed each of the others twice. And although his trajectory in New York closely mirrors his consistent ascent in the Australian Open -- where he broke through in 2009 as champion -- the U.S. Open, with its swift courts, remains his most elusive Slam.

Nadal lost in the semifinals the past two years (to Andy Murray in 2008 and Juan Martin del Potro in '09) and he has always looked a little weary -- understandably -- when he reaches the second week in New York. In 2008 -- the first time he accomplished the Euro Slam double -- he also played six matches at the Beijing Olympics, winning gold.

This year, he's scheduled to play only the two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events, in Toronto and Cincinnati. Based on his numbers from recent years (an average of 28 post-Wimbledon matches from 2005-09), Nadal will finish with about 80 matches. That's the same number as last year, when he missed more than two months with injured knees -- and far fewer than the ATP-high of 93 he posted in 2008.

Even with defending champion Del Potro expected to miss the U.S. Open and Roger Federer coming off two exits in majors quarterfinals, Nadal will be pressed in attempting the unusual triple. The last man to win three straight majors in the same year? Rod Laver, in 1969, when he won all four.

It says here Laver's triple play will go unmatched.

Thierry Henry retiring from French team

Updated: July 15, 2010, 4:42 PM ET

Henry retiring from French team

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Thierry Henry is retiring from the French national team.

The 32-year-old forward announced his decision Thursday at the offices of The Associated Press before a news conference to discuss his signing with Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls.

A member of France's 1998 world championship and 2000 European champion teams, Henry said he will not try to emulate England's David Beckham and commute between the U.S. and Europe.

“ I always want to be here 100 percent and fully committed to this cause and the organization. ”

-- Thierry Henry, on living in the U.S.

Henry had a French record 51 goals in 123 international appearances. He made his debut Oct. 11, 1997, scoring in injury time of a 2-1 win over South Africa. His finale was June 22 against the Bafana Bafana, when he entered in the 55th minute as the French were eliminated from the World Cup with a 2-1, first-round loss.

"That was my last game against South Africa," he said. "Ironically, it was also my first game in the national team against South Africa."

Henry made up his mind before the tournament.

"I couldn't announce it before because that's not the type of thing you announce before a World Cup," he said.

French players went on strike and refused to train before their final match when striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home for verbally using coach Raymond Domenech, who was replaced after the tournament by Laurent Blanc.

"We still have a good team," Henry said. "I think the guys that are going to stay, they still are great players. If you see the guys playing individually in their team, they're always doing great. But as you know, in a team sport, it's always a matter of having a great team. it's not only about individuals, and I think Laurent Blanc can do this."

Still, Henry doesn't think this World Cup was the lowest point in his career. The 2002 World Cup in South Korea has that distinction.

"We didn't even score one goal and we were the reigning world champion," he said. "And we bounced back, and we went to the final of the World Cup in 2006. Obviously we didn't win it. It still hurts."

Domenech didn't start Henry at the tournament, using him twice as a substitute.

"I will always respect and accept that. It wasn't easy at the time, but I don't regret anything," Henry said. "I think for the French team and French football it's time to move on and make sure that they can be again successful."

By coming to New York, Henry realizes he could anger a large Irish community. On a blown call last November, Henry handled the ball twice with his left hand, poking it to William Gallas for a go-ahead extra-time goal against Ireland in a playoff that put France into the World Cup.

"After the game, I did apologize and I was saying this to the guys on the pitch, to the Irish guys," Henry said. "But, hey, the rules of the game are the ref doesn't blow the whistle, you've got to play."

He compared it with another clear hand ball call that was missed.

"It was kind of funny to see [Brazil's] Luis Fabiano score this goal against Ivory Coast in the World Cup, and nobody ever said anything," he said. "It was kind of weird, but that's the way the game is."

With the Red Bulls, Henry will go back to playing in the middle of the field rather than on the left, where he had played with Barcelona. He said he played with a knee injury for much of the first half of last season, making it only fair that he lost playing time to Pedro Rodriguez and Bojan Krkic.

He thinks he has a lot to contribute to MLS.

"Maybe I'm not like the 20-year-old who used to run past anybody, but it's all about awareness," he said.

His new contract runs for 4½ seasons. After that, he'd like to remain in the game.

"I think at 37 maybe it will be time to say goodbye," he said. "I can see being a manager sometime. It is not that easy. So we'll see."

He is to make his Red Bulls debut against Tottenham on July 22. Having scored a club-record 226 goals for Arsenal from 1999-07, it's more than an exhibition game.

"I won't even mention the name of the team that we are going to play on the 22nd," he said. "That's how big a rivalry is it for me."

Hunter: NBA lockout is possible

Hunter: NBA lockout is possible

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com
Archive

NEW YORK -- In response to NBA commissioner David Stern's assertion that the league lost $370 million last season, the head of the players' union claimed Wednesday that Stern's numbers are as much as $370 million off base.

Union director Billy Hunter made that statement in a telephone interview with ESPN.com, saying the commissioner's assertion of the severity of the owners' financial woes "just doesn't hold water."

His comments illustrated the fundamental differences the sides are facing as they work to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one due to expire next June 30.

In a nutshell, the union feels the current system is working well for everyone, while the owners feel the labor agreement needs to be drastically overhauled to enable teams to operate profitably.

The sides have started negotiations toward a new one but remain far apart, creating fears of the first work stoppage since 1998-99.

"I'm preparing for a lockout right now and I haven't seen anything to change that notion. Hopefully I'll see something over the next several months," Hunter said. "As of this moment, it's full speed ahead for me in preparing the players for a worst-case scenario."

Hunter, who also spoke Wednesday to several other news organizations, said the players do not believe the owners' claim that they lost a combined $370 million last season -- a statement Stern reiterated in public comments Monday following an owners' meeting in Las Vegas.

"There might not be any losses at all. It depends on what accounting procedure is used," Hunter said. "If you decide you don't count interest and depreciation, you already lop off 250 of the 370 million dollars, and everything else was predicated upon what they were projecting, which was a decline in attendance that didn't happen. Attendance was the second-highest ever."

In defending his position that the current system is working, Hunter said player salaries decreased 1 percent in 2009-10 after five consecutive years of growth at a time when overall league revenues reached an all-time high.

"The projected losses of $400 million were based on revenue projections made last summer, and in fact revenues did not go down, they actually increased. So for them to say there has been no shift in the environment, it just doesn't hold water," Hunter said.

"We have little confidence in their projections, because obviously the league's performance demonstrated their projections were off. We had the best Finals in years, Game 7 had highest TV rating in 12 years, the '09-10 BRI [basketball-related income] was the highest in NBA history, player salaries went down, and right now we're experiencing an all-time high in season-ticket sales coupled with the fact that the interest being demonstrated by the public is unprecedented.

"So I can't imagine at a time like this when the league is sort of riding the crest of the wave that there would be a desire on anyone's part to want to disrupt that," Hunter said. "What we should be doing is trying to come to some arrangement that both of us find to be mutually beneficial and acceptable."

Hunter was already wary of the league's projections after it warned its teams last July that next season's salary cap could fall as low as $50.4 million. It was set last week at $58.0 million, even higher than this season's.

"Clearly it causes us some concern, causes us to question their numbers," Hunter said.

Hunter said the players will offer their interpretations of the league's finances at the next bargaining meeting. He said he hasn't heard anything from the league since the union submitted its proposal for a CBA earlier this month.

Stern said that proposal basically embraced the current system, but the league believes changes are necessary and the teams that spent freely during free agency did so because it was the only way they could win. Hunter disagrees, saying owners want a system where they can spend and "receive guaranteed profits unlike any other industry in America."

Stern also said the higher-than-expected cap didn't mean things were better than they were a year ago, but Hunter points to huge increases in season ticket sales in New York, New Jersey, Chicago and Charlotte as proof otherwise.

The union is calling for expanded revenue sharing among teams, with Hunter noting that a group of small-market owners recommended it to Stern a couple of years ago. Stern has said it will come after the agreement with the players, but Hunter said it should come as part of the deal.

"Revenue sharing has to be part of the process, has to be part of the total package," Hunter said.

Hunter thinks owners who lived through the 1998 lockout won't want to risk shutting the league down again, but wonders if some newer ones might be willing to sit out for a year or two. Just in case, he's telling players to save their money and stay united.

Hunter hopes "cooler heads prevail" and it won't come to that point.

"This is a high time for the NBA, a time for celebration," Hunter said. "So we're going to do everything within our power -- I can't underscore that enough -- to try to reach an agreement."

Braves get Gonzalez; Escobar to Jays

Braves get Gonzalez; Escobar to Jays

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- The NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, looking to bolster their lineup for the second half of the season, acquired Alex Gonzalez in a swap of shortstops that sent Yunel Escobar to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

The Braves also traded left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes to the Blue Jays in the five-player deal while also adding left-handed minor league pitcher Tim Collins and minor league shortstop Tyler Pastornicky.

The 33-year-old Gonzalez is hitting .259 with 17 home runs and 50 RBIs. He is tied for fifth in the American League with 43 extra-base hits.

"He's an outstanding defensive shortstop and he's having a very good offensive season," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "We think he can improve our run production. He immediately leads our team in home runs."

Troy Glaus had 14 homers to lead the Braves at the All-Star break.

Escobar hit .299 with career-best totals of 14 homers and 76 RBIs last season. He has struggled this year, hitting only .238 with no homers and 19 RBIs.

"We feel that Yunel Escobar will absolutely turn it around," Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Tuesday.

"There's certainly an element of risk there, but we feel he has a very good opportunity to turn it around. I think if Yunel Escobar was doing what he did in the past, he's not available to us and this trade does not present itself," he said.

Wren said Escobar could enjoy his best years after leaving the Braves.

"He very well may," Wren said. "He's a talented guy. But for our ballclub we felt we needed to make some adjustments. It just wasn't happening here right now."

The Braves also took on more salary. Escobar is making $435,000 this season. Gonzalez's salary is $2.75 million; his contract includes a 2011 club option for $2.5 million.

"Getting a guy we can control for a year and a half was important to us," Wren said.

Each shortstop is regarded as a strong defensive player.

"Alex may not be quite as flashy as Escobar, but he's an extremely solid shortstop," Wren said.

Wren said Gonzalez is expected to be with the team for Thursday night's game against Milwaukee.

"He's excited to be here and to be coming to a first-place team," Wren said.

The Braves have a four-game lead over the New York Mets and a 4½-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Atlanta outfielders Jason Heyward (thumb) and Nate McLouth (concussion) are on the disabled list. Heyward, who was voted an All-Star starter as a rookie, could return on Thursday.

"With the guys coming off the DL in the next week or so we think we have the ability to improve our ballclub and also sit back and see what our needs may be at the trade deadline," Wren said.

The Blue Jays, one game under .500, are 12½ games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East.

Anthopoulos said the Blue Jays "are not actively shopping" other players.

Reyes, 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett, has a 5-15 career record with Atlanta. Kris Medlen's emergence as Atlanta's No. 5 starter pushed Kenshin Kawakami to the bullpen and further blocked Reyes' return to Atlanta.

The Blue Jays optioned Reyes to Double-A New Hampshire.

Collins was 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA and nine saves in 35 games for Double-A New Hampshire.

Pastornicky was batting .258 with 16 doubles, 35 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 77 games for Class A Dunedin.

Wren said Collins and Pastornicky will report to Double-A Mississippi.
