Gonzalez arrested on shoplifting charge

Gonzalez arrested on shoplifting charge

Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. -- Fired Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at a New Jersey mall.

Millburn police say the 47-year-old Gonzalez was arrested Monday after reporting to police headquarters and was charged Tuesday with shoplifting and criminal mischief.

He is accused of taking a $1,400 men's satchel from the Polo Ralph Lauren store in the Short Hills Mall on June 29.

Gonzalez, who was fired March 17, was not immediately available for comment.

Gerald Krovatin is representing Gonzalez in a lawsuit over his dismissal. He did not return a telephone call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

A spokeswoman for the Essex County prosecutor's office says the shoplifting charge is a third-degree offense punishable by up to five years in jail.

Post office wants to raise stamp price 2 cents to 46 cents

Post office wants to raise stamp price 2 cents to 46 cents
By Randolph E. Schmid, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — The post office wants to increase the price of a stamp by 2 cents to 46 cents. The agency has been battered by massive losses and declining mail volume and faces a financial crisis.

Postal officials announced a wide-ranging series of proposed price increases Tuesday, averaging about 5%, and covering first class, advertising mail, periodicals, packages and other services.

The request now goes to the independent Postal Rate Commission which has 90 days to respond.

The boost comes as no surprise. Postmaster General John Potter said March 2 that a rate increase would be necessary for the agency, which does not receive tax funds for its operations.

The current 44-cent first-class rate took effect May 11, 2009.

While that change will be the most visible, rates for other types of mail will also go up, raising concern among business groups and nonprofit organizations.

Under the law, the post office is generally limited to increases no more than the rate of inflation — 0.9% for the year ended in May.

However, the agency is allowed to seek a larger increase in unusual circumstances. Potter said in March he planned to take that step.

"The projections going forward are not bright," Potter said then. But, he added: "All is not lost. ... We can right this ship."

The agency lost $3.8 billion last fiscal year despite cutting 40,000 full-time positions and making other reductions. It has continued to face significant losses this year.

The weak economy has sharply reduced mail volume as companies cut their advertising. At the same time there has been a significant drop in lucrative first-class mail, with more and more people turning to the Internet to communicate with each other as well as to receive and pay bills.

Postal officials also have proposed eliminating Saturday mail delivery as a means of cutting costs, a change that would require congressional approval.

Post office finances are also complicated by the requirement that the agency make annual payments to pre-fund future health benefits for retirees, something not required of other government agencies.

The postal inspector general contends that the Postal Service has been overcharged billions of dollars for retirement benefits for employees who worked for the old Post Office Department before it was converted to the Postal Service in 1970.

Serena Williams wanted Venus's body -- but not anymore

Serena Williams wanted Venus's body -- but not anymore

By Eunice Oh, PEOPLE.com

 July 6, 2010 12:42 p.m. EDT

(PEOPLE.com) -- When it comes down to the numbers, Serena Williams has outdone older sister Venus.

But even with 27 grand slam titles, a No. 1 world ranking and a spot on women tennis' all-time greatest champions list, Serena says there's one thing Venus has that she always wanted -- but never could get.

"I'm super-curvy. I have big boobs and this massive butt. [Venus is] tall and she's like a model and she fits everything," the younger Williams sister tells Harper's Bazaar.

"I was growing up, wanting to be her, wanting to look like her, and I was always fitting in her clothes, but then one day I couldn't," she recalls. "I was 23 when I realized that I wasn't Venus. She's totally different."

But now, the envy is gone and Serena, 28, says she's embraced her own body. "Different is good," says the tennis star, who once told PEOPLE that she was sensitive about her arms and thighs.

Equally as challenging for the reigning Wimbledon champion: Having and maintaining a relationship.

After a low-key romance with rapper and actor Common since 2008, Williams says they broke up in April because "his schedule is actually worse than mine."

"He didn't want the responsibility," she adds. "It's really tough."

Sarkozy caught up in L'Oreal heiress cash scandal

Sarkozy caught up in L'Oreal heiress cash scandal

by Thibauld Malterre Thibauld Malterre

PARIS (AFP) – Allegations of illegal donations from France's richest woman plunged Nicolas Sarkozy into the biggest crisis of his presidency Tuesday, despite protests he is the victim of a smear campaign.

The French government reacted angrily to reports police had interviewed a witness over claims his presidential campaign received an illegal contribution of 150,000 euros in cash from L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt.

Sarkozy faces mounting pressure to address the allegations directly and calls for a clear-out of tainted ministers, including embattled Labour Minister Eric Woerth, who is at the centre of the scandal.

"I would love it so much if the country could excite itself over the big problems ... rather than to get wrapped up in the first horror, a slander with only one goal, to smear with no basis in reality," Sarkozy said.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon was more direct.

"This is slander, this is a systematic destabilisation campaign," Fillon told a news conference at the European parliament in Strasbourg.

"We will not be intimidated by these methods and I want to say that those who are involved in this manhunt, or slanderous accusations, should ask themselves if they still have a conscience," he said.

In Paris, a parliamentary debate turned ugly when Budget Minister Francois Baroin accused the opposition of doing the work of the far right in pursuing the scandal, prompting a walk-out by Socialist deputies.

Sarkozy's approval ratings are at their lowest levels since his 2007 election and he faces an uphill battle to get reforms back on track before seeking reelection in 2012.

On Tuesday, an opinion poll by the Ifop agency found 69 percent of French voters would like to see an immediate cabinet reshuffle.

Already at the weekend two junior ministers were forced to step down over reports that they had spent public money on private jet rentals and cigars.

The new claim is that Woerth, treasurer of the ruling UMP as well as a key minister, received 150,000 euros (188,000 dollars) in cash from Bettencourt. Donations to politicians and their parties are strictly limited in France.

The investigative website Mediapart interviewed a former Bettencourt accountant, identified as Claire T., who alleged the heiress often gave cash to right-wing politicians.

The accountant's lawyer, Antoine Gillot, confirmed to AFP that his client had told police about the alleged payments.

According to Mediapart, the accountant also alleges that Sarkozy personally received envelopes of cash after dinners at Bettencourt's mansion when he was mayor of the Paris suburb of Neuilly.

Woerth denied any wrongdoing and said he would not resign: "My party has not received a single illegal euro. That's enough! I have been treasurer for eight years. No one can say I did anything wrong."

Last week, Sarkozy defended Woerth after it was revealed that his wife worked for a firm managing Bettencourt's 17-billion-euro personal fortune.

But, with the head of state now personally implicated, key right-wing allies, including the UMP leader in parliament, Jean-Francois Cope, called on the president to "speak to the French people" about the scandal.

Presidential aides confirmed he was considering making a televised address.

Benoit Hamon, spokesman for the opposition Socialists, called for a reshuffle and said that the allegations meant Woerth no longer had the "legitimacy" to be the government's architect of pension reform.

Claire T. alleged that Woerth received the cash donation in March 2007, ahead of Sarkozy's election in May.

Woerth has served as Sarkozy's budget minister charged with fighting tax evasion by personalities like Bettencourt, before serving as labour minister.

Mediapart quoted Claire T. as saying she had been asked for 150,000 euros by Bettencourt's financial adviser Patrice de Maistre, who told her he would give it "discreetly" to Woerth at a dinner.

The accountant, who worked for Bettencourt for 12 years until 2008, said she believed Sarkozy had also received envelopes in person while he was mayor between 1983 and 2002.

"Everyone in the house knew that Sarkozy went to see the Bettencourts to collect money," Mediapart quoted her as saying.

The scandal implicating the heiress started with secret tapes recorded by the 87-year-old billionaire's butler and leaked to media last month.

Woerth's name came up in the conversations, in which she and Maistre -- who denies all the allegations -- allegedly plotted to evade taxes.

Caster Semenya cleared to compete again

800m champ Semenya cleared to race

Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG -- Caster Semenya was cleared to immediately return to track by the sport's governing body Tuesday, ending an 11-month layoff while she underwent gender tests after becoming the 800-meter world champion.

Semenya is allowed to keep running as a woman, although it is unclear if she has had any medical procedure or treatment during her time away.

The International Association of Athletics Federations said medical details of the 19-year-old South African's case would remain confidential and it will have no further comment on the matter.

The IAAF added in its statement from its Monaco headquarters that it accepts the conclusion of a panel of medical experts that Semenya can compete with "immediate effect."

She could return to competition at the world junior championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, starting July 19.

"I am thrilled to enter the global athletics arena once again and look forward to competing with all the disputes behind me." Semenya said in a statement.

Richard Stander of Athletics South Africa said that Semenya would now be considered for South Africa's team for the world junior championships, pending a fitness test in Pretoria on Wednesday requested by ASA.

"Of course we are happy," Stander said. "When an athlete cannot compete it is frustrating for them and frustrating for us as a federation."

Stander said the African championships in Kenya in late July and October's Commonwealth Games in India were more realistic targets for Semenya after her long absence from competition.

Semenya's lawyers said negotiations with the IAAF lasted 10 months and had been held in Monaco, Istanbul and Parish.

"But due to the nature of the matter the parties resolved to keep the negotiations confidential," said Greg Nott, managing partner of Dewey and LeBoeuf's Johannesburg office.

Semenya underwent gender tests following her dominant run as an 18-year-old at the Berlin world championships last August.

"We are delighted that Caster is finally being permitted to compete with other women, as is her legal and natural right," lawyer Jeffrey Kessler said. "Hopefully, this resolution will set a precedent so that no female athlete in the future will have to experience the long delays and public scrutiny which Caster has been forced to endure."

Earlier, Semenya's father said his daughter had told him before the announcement that she was going to be cleared.

"She told me she doesn't have any problems and she is happy," Jacob Semenya said.

The announcement ended a saga in which the teenager burst onto the world scene in Berlin where she captured a gold medal in her first major event. Her dramatic improvement in times and muscular build led the IAAF to order gender verification tests.

Semenya was welcomed as a national hero in South Africa following her stunning victory, but reports of the gender tests and stories in the Australian media saying she had both male and female sex organs caused outrage in her home country and led some public officials to rally behind her.

Last month, South Africa's sports ministry abruptly canceled a news conference in which it was expected to announce Semenya's return.

Federer falls to #3 for the first time since 2003

Updated: July 5, 2010, 9:43 AM ET

Federer drops to 3rd after quarters loss

Associated Press

WIMBLEDON, England -- Roger Federer fell to No. 3 in the ATP rankings Monday, the first time since November 2003 he's been that low.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion's quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon, following seven consecutive appearances in the final, dropped him one spot.

He trails No. 1 Rafael Nadal and new No. 2 Novak Djokovic.

Federer was No. 1 earlier this season, but he was overtaken in the rankings by Nadal on June 7, after the French Open.

Nadal won his fifth title at Roland Garros, while Federer lost in the quarterfinals there, too. That left Federer one week shy of tying Pete Sampras' career record of 286 total weeks at No. 1.

Nadal's second title at Wimbledon, a year after missing the tournament because of bad knees, increased his lead atop the rankings. Runner-up Tomas Berdych, who upset Federer at the All England Club, climbed from 13th to a career-high No. 8 by reaching his first Grand Slam final.

Andy Roddick, who lost the 2009 Wimbledon title match to six-time champion Federer, dropped two spots to No. 9 after losing in the fourth round. The man who beat him, Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan, leaped 40 spots to No. 42.

Like Nadal, Wimbledon women's champion Serena Williams remains at No. 1. But her older sister, Venus, dropped from No. 2 to No. 4. Jelena Jankovic moved to second, with Caroline Wozniacki third.

Vera Zvonareva's run to her first major final allowed her to rise from No. 21 to No. 9.
