Pacquiao is sworn in to Congress

Pacquiao sworn in to Congress

ESPN.com news services

World welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao officially added a new title -- Congressman.

Pacquiao was sworn in to the Philippines' House of Representatives on Monday in the southern province of Sarangani.

"He wants change," Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said of Pacquiao before the boxer won the election. "I think it's genuine. People see that he wants to help his country, and that's why they're voting. That's why they support him."

Pacquiao accepted his third Fighter of the Year award June 4 after a year that featured a spectacular second-round knockout of Ricky Hatton to win a 140-pound belt and a brutal 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto that gave Pacquiao titles in a record seven divisions.

"When he fights they close down Parliament and all the terrorists call for a peace," Roach said in May, only half jokingly. "It's not going to change anything. They'll just announce him as Congressman Manny Pacquiao, that's all."

Promoter Bob Arum will continue work on perhaps the most highly anticipated fight in decades, between Pacquiao and the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two nearly reached an agreement to fight earlier this year, but negotiations broke down when Mayweather insisted on Olympic-style drug testing and Pacquiao refused to have blood drawn within 24 days of a fight.

But Arum said that Pacquiao is now willing to have blood tests within 14 days of the fight, the cutoff point that Mayweather had agreed to in the first go-around.

Arum also said he believes the fight, which would likely happen in November, will end up in Las Vegas rather than Cowboys Stadium or another venue that could pack upward of 100,000 fans.

Congress convenes in July in the Philippines.

FIFA to censor stadium replays at World Cup

FIFA: Replay of Tevez goal 'a mistake'

Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG -- FIFA will censor World Cup match action being shown on giant screens inside the stadium after replays of Argentina's disputed first goal against Mexico fueled arguments on the pitch.

Angry Mexico players protested to referee Roberto Rosetti after the screens in Johannesburg's Soccer City showed Argentina forward Carlos Tevez was offside before he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said Monday that replaying the incident was "a clear mistake."

Unfortunately, there's no turning back a call, even when players and coaches see the video evidence, writes ESPN The Magazine's Jeff Bradley.

"This will be corrected and we will have a closer look into that," Maingot told a news conference Monday. "We will work on this and be a bit more, I would say, tight on this for the games to be played."

Maingot said the screens were used to broadcast a FIFA "infotainment program" to fans before the match and could be used to replay some match action.

Responsibility for operating the screens falls to South Africa's World Cup organizing committee, which took charge of the 10 stadiums during the tournament.

Organizers' spokesman Jermaine Craig said he had spoken to the stadium broadcasting team about the incident.

"The goal was awarded and it happened relatively quickly," Craig said. "In retrospect, maybe it shouldn't have been shown. It was shown and unfortunately there is nothing we can do about that."

Maingot said FIFA has not yet received feedback from its officials at the match about a mass confrontation between coaches and players behind the Mexico bench as the teams left the field at halftime.

Italian referee Rosetti was at the center of a melee trying to separate heated conversations that included Argentina coach Diego Maradona.

Venus Williams was booed

Today, on day 7 of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, Venus Williams was to play on court 2 and was late. Well, she was suppose to receive an escort out to the court, but apparently no one showed up so she was 8 mins. late for her 4th round match. Some of the disrespectful, nincompoops in the stands started to boo her when she arrived onto the court and the match finally got underway. Well, Venus ended up winning the  match be a score of 6-4, 7-5. Now she moves on to the quarterfinals where she will face Tsvetana Pironkova on June 29, 2010.

Soderling, Nadal reach 4th round

Soderling reaches 4th round again

ESPN.com news services

WIMBLEDON, England -- Second-seeded Rafael Nadal rallied for another five-set victory to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, overcoming physical ailments and a warning for coaching.

The Spaniard battled back from two-sets-to-one down to defeat Germany's Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 in a 3½-hour Centre Court slugfest Saturday.

Earlier, Robin Soderling of Sweden advanced with a straight-sets victory over Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.

Nadal, who won the title in 2008 but missed last year's tournament due to knee troubles, called for the trainer several times for treatment on his left arm and right leg.

Petzschner, playing his third straight five-setter, also needed medical treatment on several changeovers.

Nadal was angry after receiving a warning from chair umpire Cedric Mourier in the fifth set for receiving coaching from coach and uncle Toni Nadal.

Nadal made the decisive break in the eighth game of the final set before holding serve to love to close out the match.

He will play unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu for a berth in the quarterfinals.

Sixth-seeded Soderling, a two-time French Open finalist, beat the 24th-ranked Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in a little less than two hours.

After breezing through the first two sets, the Swede faced a stiffer challenge from the left-handed Brazilian in the third, when he saved three break points in the penultimate game of the match.

Soderling is one of only three men yet to drop a set at Wimbledon, where he has reached the round of 16 for the second consecutive year.

He will play the ninth-seeded David Ferrer.

Serena handles Cibulkova in 2 sets

ESPN.com news services

WIMBLEDON, England -- Defending champion Serena Williams put on a serving clinic Saturday, hitting 20 aces in a straight-sets win over Dominika Cibulkova that sets up a matchup with former champion Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova advanced to the fourth round for the first time since 2007, defeating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3. The 23-year-old Russian will play Williams on Monday.

The top-seeded American had at least two aces in each of her eight service games and overpowered the 46th-ranked Slovak 6-0, 7-5 on Centre Court.

"Serving that well feels awesome," Williams said. "I serve well at Wimbledon for some unknown reason. I want to keep doing it. I wish I could serve like this every tournament."

Williams won 37 of 43 service points and held at love five times. She won 19 of her first 20 service points, with Cibulkova putting only four returns in play in that stretch.

The first set lasted just 18 minutes, with Williams winning 25 of 31 points, serving six aces and hitting 12 winners. It was the third match in a row that Williams won the first set 6-0.

Cibulkova, a semifinalist at the French Open last year, finally got on the scoreboard when she held serve for 1-1 in the second set. From then on, she kept the match competitive by holding serve, although she couldn't cope with Williams' serves.

Cibulkova saved a match point while serving at 4-5 with a crosscourt backhand winner, but Williams broke in the 12th game to close out the match.

Williams credited Cibulkova with raising her game, but was unhappy with her own performance in the second set.

"I just kind of came off the gas a little too much," she said. "Just can't do that in big Grand Slams like this."

Cibulkova -- generously listed at 5-foot-3 -- looked tiny next to the imposing 5-foot-9 Williams.

"It was really hard returning her serve because she was mixing her serve and playing really fast serves to the lines," she said. "I couldn't even get the ball, not even try to hit a return.

"I really doubt if somebody can beat her here if she plays like this."

Williams, chasing her fourth Wimbledon title and 13th Grand Slam crown, will next play Sharapova, who beat Williams in the 2004 final. Sharapova and is coming back into top form after right shoulder surgery in 2008.

Sharapova secured victory with an ace after nearly two hours on court to advance to the final 16 at the All England Club.

Sharapova gained the decisive break in the second set in the sixth game, after wasting five opportunities, then held the following game after saving a break point.

Because Sharapova is seeded 16th, she is meeting Williams in the fourth round rather than the later stages.

"I definitely don't think it's early," Williams said. "It is what it is. You always have to be ready. She's obviously really good, especially on grass."

Recalling the 2004 final, Williams said, "I just remember I was really nervous. I think I put too much pressure on myself. It didn't work out. That was that."

Despite her easy run through the first three rounds this week, Williams doesn't feel as if she's playing as well as last year when she beat sister Venus in the final.

"I definitely have to pick up and play better," she said.

Also Saturday, third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki made it to the fourth round by beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-4. She'll face unseeded Czech Petra Kvitova, who upset 14th-seeded Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-0. Seventh-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sara Errani of Italy.

US pilot detained for showing underwear in Brazil

US pilot detained for showing underwear in Brazil

SAO PAULO – A United Airlines pilot was briefly detained at the international airport in Rio de Janeiro after lowering his pants during a security screening, police said Saturday.

Pilot Michael D. Slynn, 49, was asked to remove his belt and shoes as part of a routine security screening Friday afternoon. In response, Slynn laughed at security guards and lowered his pants to his ankles, said a police spokesman who was prohibited by departmental rules from giving his name.

Slynn was detained but released shortly afterward and allowed to fly back to Washington, D.C., after signing a document promising to appear before a judge the next time he is in Brazil, the spokesman said.

Calls to United Airlines in Brazil were not immediately returned. When asked for comment, Sarah Massier, a spokeswoman for the Chicago-based company, wrote in an e-mail, "We are investigating the matter."

Two telephone numbers listed for a Michael Slynn, in California and Florida, respectively, were disconnected or could not take messages Saturday.

Federal Police Chief Rafael Andreatta was quoted by the Internet site of the Brazilian newspaper O Globo as saying the pilot "did not respect security rules and made fun of officers."

It was not the first time an American pilot has gotten into trouble for allegedly responding inappropriately to Brazil's airport security measures.

In 2004, American Airlines pilot Dale Robin Hersh was fined $13,000 for allegedly giving the finger as he was being photographed at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport. The photograph was among entry requirements for U.S. citizens implemented by Brazil at the time in response to similar rules in the United States.

Police accused Hersh of showing contempt for authorities and took him to a federal courthouse. Hersh agreed to a prosecutor's offer to pay a fine in exchange for no charges being filed against him.
