I fired up my virtual XP instance in VM Ware, and I got it to work myself in XP. Interesting!
You are supposed to upgrade to IE7 in order for the graphics to work correctly, but I stuck with IE6 (I like to use IE6 for testing under XP). I can see why they ask you to upgrade, because some weird things happen with the graphics, but it does not stop it from working -- just from looking perfect.
I did not have to install the C++ package. I am running a vanilla XP install, so I imagine other would not either. Maybe it is only required for non-Sidebar stuff.
My install order was (1) Alky for Applications, (2) the Windows XP wireless hotfix (although this may have been included in Alky, in which case I did not need to do this), (3) then the Sidebar package called "Ricks_WindowsSidebar_AlkyX.7z" (I wish they would give it a real name). I also tried to install the gadgetinstaller, but it seems that was already installed as part of one of the other packages I installed, so I did not need it.
So, inactuality, I may have only needed to install Alky and the Sidebar piece. (The Sidebar piece does not have a regular installer. You need to right-click on Sidebar.ini and select "install" from the menu.)
After finishing the above and rebooting, I downloaded the Lottery Results Gadget, and it installed, but with a little glitchyness. Unlike Vista, the gadget did not automatically create itself inside the Sidebar. i had to close the gadget picker and re-open it. When I re-opened it, the Results gadget was on page 2. I dragged it to the new Sidebar, and it worked perfectly, minus the weird graphics issues I mentioned above.
So this seems like a valid alternative for people running XP today, in order to run the gadget. If anyone else tries this, I'd love to hear how it went for you.
How about this name "The XP Hack for Todd's Gadget" LOL!
I didn't believe for one second that there wasn't a hack for XP but I'm surprised it came so soon. I think I'll pass on it. No Thank you. But thanks to Rick for looking out for XP users.
i don't think it a hack for XP, it was a reverse engineering for sidebar. and the credit must be go to VAIO tools aka ALKY APLICATION
Special thanks to Rafael & ZoRoNaX creators of "VAIO" a.k.a. "Alky for Applications" for all their hard work making this awesome program.
