N.C. lottery bill may be changed in the Senate

North Carolina Lottery

A special North Carolina Senate committee will meet today to hash out the details of the lottery bill sent to them from the House.

Most lawmakers say they want to see a number of changes before they make a decision, which could mean a vote is still weeks away.

The committee will take up the House version of the lottery bill that barely passed earlier this month.  That bill calls for a lottery run by a state commission with no advertising allowed.

During the Senate committee's first meeting last week, many legislators made it clear that if the bill passes, it will look much different than the House's version.  Some senators said they would rather see a private company run the lottery.  Others say they won't go along with a lottery unless it can be promoted through advertising.

The committee's chair says a vote will not happen until sometime in May.  If the Senate does pass the bill, it would then go back to the House for another vote.

This one kind of puzzles me. And I maybe wrong, but how much money do they expect to generate and how long do they think they will be in operation without advertising? As I said, I maybe wrong. Are there any other states out there that have state run lotteries that do not advertise and are operating in the black.

I agree that politicians shouldn't write legislation to rule out advertising.

I say just go ahead and do it !!! Tired of waitin.

North Carolina needs a lottery but if we don't hook up with Powerball and MegaMillion I'll still go to SC and VA to play.

I vote to cut our politicians' salaries in half and use the money for educational purposes.

Did SC have to go through all this?  If not,  why does NC have to be diffterent?  Why can't we just let the public vote on it?  I don't get it!!!!!!!!!!

'cause if the USA was a horse, North Carolina would be the butt end.

I see-the butt would be the Outer Banks.
