King King Millions lottery winner is 47-year-old mom

New York LotteryNew York Lottery: King King Millions lottery winner is 47-year-old mom

One Glen Head, New York woman had a reason to "go ape" yesterday as she came forward to collect a King Kong-size lottery check for $55 million.

Margie Barres, a 47-year-old mother of one, was not glued to the TV on Dec. 5, like the millions of other New Yorkers who purchased a King Kong Millions ticket. Instead, she waited until the morning after the drawing and the world premiere of the remake of the classic movie to check the New York Lottery's Web site.

When Barres discovered the winning ticket was sold at Glen Cove Village Farm, the place where she purchased her tickets, she immediately matched her numbers to the winning number. "I couldn't believe it was true," she said after discovering she possessed the golden ticket.

The New York Lottery announced Barres as the jackpot winner at Carlyle on the Green caterers yesterday. She chose to receive the $55 million prize as a lump sum, totaling $28,982,197.

New York Lottery launched a partnership with Universal Studios and its remake of the "King Kong" movie, which includes the jackpot drawing and release of a new scratchoff ticket that has an $8 million top prize — the largest prize ever for a New York Lottery scratchoff game.

"Not only has it created great sales for the New York Lottery's King Kong game, but it has also generated an enormous amount of buzz for the blockbuster movie" that opens in theaters tonight at midnight, said New York Lottery director Nancy Palumbo.

There were 16 winning numbers drawn in the King Kong Millions jackpot game. New Yorkers who purchased tickets are encouraged to check their tickets, since four of the $1 million second prizes and eight of the $100,000 third prizes still have not been claimed. Winning numbers can be found on Lottery Post at http://www.lotterypost.com/thread/124254.

    What a great promotion!

Until you realize that the prize pool was only 40% of sales. Even lotteries almost always pay back at least 50%.

I am sure Margie Barres couldn't care less about how much New York kept.  She got her $55M.  That is all that matters to the winner.  To the thousands, millions, of losers, it made no difference how much the state kept.  They could have kept 80 percent and it made no difference to those who matched nothing.

      Cheers

What's wrong with Take 5 and Pick 10?

Nothing. I was trying to keep it simple for someone from a state that just started a lottery. I don't want her playing NY Cheapo or the annuity-only scratch games.

Maybe you should stop trying to decide what is best for others to play. I still do not know why you even care how much money someone else wins, or how they choose to claim it. Annuity or cash, it is all still cash period...

If enough people stopped playing the games I don't like, maybe the lotteries would change them or replace them.
