Powerball lottery jackpot reaches $250 million

Powerball

The jackpot in America's favorite lottery game continues to grow to enormous amounts.

Even though the grand prize was not awarded Wednesday evening, 1,324,903 players across the nation won a total of more than $14.4 million in prizes.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $250 million.

The cash option for the Saturday, February 11th drawing will be an estimated $120.1 million.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 14, 25, 32, 48, 54 and the Powerball was 10. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

Thirteen winning tickets in Iowa (3), Kentucky (1), Missouri (1), New Mexico (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (1), South Carolina (1), Tennessee (2), and Wisconsin (2) matched all 5 white numbers for a $200,000 prize. The two big winners in Pennsylvania and Indiana not only matched all 5 white numbers, but also purchased the Power Play option multiplying the $200,000 prize 5 times for a total win of $1,000,000.

Sixty players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000.  Thirteen additional players who won at this prize level also purchased the Power Play and had the $10,000 winnings multiplied by 5 to $50,000.

More than 152,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prizes by 5 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there aren't any jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than $53.3 million in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night. The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY05. That translates into more than $600 million for worthwhile state projects.

What would $120.1M cash look like?

“……
And if $120.1 million is just too hard to imagine, here are some fun facts about what $120.1 million looks like.  Measured in one-hundred-dollar bills, $120.1 million:

Would line up, end to end, for 113.7 miles, crossing the US almost .04 times.

That would be the estimated cash option before taxes.....

You're going to have to wait at least 2 months or so in that case. I'm calling for 3 more rolls to 387 before I take it with a single ticket. That will be just enough to reclaim the US record from Megamillions.

I'd hold out for 437, but the chances of 5 rolls are only about 1%, and that's just too improbable.

HAPPY SATURDAY LIBRA!

I know what you mean being in one of the original 11 here in NC...I have to drive over the border to my favorite lottery stop before hitting my favorite watering hole back on my side where it is also raining, sleeting or whatever.

I know a place where the lines are tiny and therefore my lotto club's 100 tickets will be easy to purchase. However, like you said, "SOMEONE" will hit tonight I am sure. I just hope it's me :)

I thought that those series were terrible as well. So bad, in fact, that our club won nothing the past couple of draws, which is unusual.

And........I am doing well, thank you :) Just testing a new Pick-4 that I've been developing. So far so good :)

Hi Libra926,

My posts are so pitiful.  Typoes, you name it.I Agree!  I actually type 160wpm on a keyboard and I never took a typing or keyboarding class a day in my life.  Learned on my own.  Then the worst part of it all is I was 3 hours away from an English Major in college.  There is a modern thing called spell check which I should use, but don't.  Grammar is horrific and I shudder when I hit 'send'.  Oftentimes, I don't think about the correct word until I have typed it.  The only keys I know are home row---I think that is what typists call it.  When I read your posts, I just laughed and laughed.  You made my day!

I haven't been a part of this community very long and I agree, DoubleDown's posts are enlightening.  Of course, he is going to keep our joint account very, very, secret.  So, don't worry, only a select few will share in that win.  It is going to be a win this weekend, I think.  I have spent $24.00!  More than my usual $20 when the jackpot gets big.  That is a sure sign (has been in the past) that the winner(s) will be drawn.  I hope a Katrina survivor wins, too.  That was a mean 'lil cuss of a gal!  She cleaned houses and lives!  Most of my family and friends are starting over from scratch. I don't mind sharing the jackpot with a fellow survivor.

Whew!  Yes NodWaited 'til the last minute to splurge my contribution this morning.  So, let's wait for the big P-A-R-T-Y Party

Hyper100 TICKETS......?????......you neeeeeedddd to win....

Do you prefer "qp".....(quick pick)...???....In MD...."qp" is a joke, and not very funny

I prefer to make up my own series.....starting w/the #5, or 2 or 6, or 1, or 7, or 4...however I think I must be using very conservative numbers, and I try to invent series beginning w/10 or 20, 24,33, or 19, something unusual because this seems to be a trend sometimes.  Strange numbers....lolololololol

In the District...."qp" is usually also a joke....most people create their own series....We are not like Indiana, Pennsylvania, Missouri....ect.....I tried "qp" in the past and was very disappointed.....

"MY".....no, no, your Postings are not 'pitiful'.......no, not at all, I always understand what you mean and look forward to communicating w/you...I wish I could afford to spend as much as you do on these tickets.....w/gas prices a $2.39-$2.47, and that's just for regular unleaded mind you...

I need at least half a Tank of gas...lolololol....you can only spend $10.00 one time....and mostly I end up spening $15.00 to buy gas...... yet I keep thinking that if I tried to play more often, maybe I'd "hit the 'BIG ONE' and then I wouldn't have to budget for gas, food, car insurance....I know we all do,  but the 'cost of living' is different in each State.....I couldn't afford to live in NY.......

Your generosity is wonderful....I too have been giving money and clothing donations for the Victims of Katrina, as well as the Homeless here in MD....I'm sorry about your Friends and Family, really I am.....starting over w/little to nothing is very hard, and I wish them the best of everything....from reading the postings on here, I can see, I am in great company because we all need to win 'BIG'.....even if it's only $100,000,...we each have a lifestyle to protect ......lolololol

Hey cps10,

Lost you the other day when we were talking about your "idea" to make millions marketing something to the Powerball people.  So, you are going to win tonight's Powerball drawing, huh?  That wouldn't be fair... you are going to make millions off the Powerball folks with your marketing idea! Dead

See Ya!I can appreciate your system..and the 'collective body' you belong to, there's only one thing I don't really understand.....w/the purchase of sooooo many tickets, and playing for the last 8 or 9 years, using your system, why has the 'collective body' never won the ULTIMATE PRIZE????

I mean, you guys have made quite an investment, if I may call it that, over a long stretch of time...I've never understood, how some people play once n'awhile, and win BIG....while others play consistently, and are still reaching for that 'gold ring'.......

cps10's avatarcps10

Well, let's see....200 tickets a week x 52 weeks = 10400 tickets/yr

We've been playing almost 9 yrs = approx 93600 tickets total give or take a couple thousand.

Now, 93600/146 million = 1/15000 I think...LOL

Now, we have won $100 many times, and even as much as 1,000 in one draw, but thats about it.

Odds are still way ahead of us. But we keep fighting for another day! :)

Weighs 2,648 pounds. It would take 1.3 one-ton trucks to carry all the cash.
Would line up, end to end, for 113.7 miles, crossing the US almost .04 times.
Would stack all the way down to the deepest ocean depth
.01 times. The Challenger Deep is 7 miles deep; a stack of 120.1 million one-hundred-dollar bills is .09 miles high.
Would fill up 16.7 boxes of copier paper

Good luck to all members!

Doesn't matter:

No one is going to see $120 Million in CASH.

That would be the estimated cash option before taxes.....

so, after Federal and state( if applicable) taxes , more like $80 million or so...

I already know how to measure $80 Million :

It would fit into my bank account(s) very nicely !!    Hurray!

Good Luck,

 DD

Don't ask why I was on the CT lottery web site, because I don't know...just surfing. Anyway, it was interesting to read in their PB section that when jackpots reach $100M they authorize high traffic retailers to enforce their own "House Rules" including selling only QPs and limiting the tickets to 100 per customer.  A winner also only has 60 days to decide how he wants to claim the prize and their 30 year graduated annuity looks like a total rip-off the way they show it, paying less than $2M for the first 4 years on a $96M jackpot.  (96M divided by 30 is 3.2) The first $3.2M check isn't issued until the 17th year!  I can understand the 100 ticket maximum, but running a card through the machine with the player's own numbers shouldn't take any more time than a quick pick if the clerk knows what he's doing, right?  That being said, here in FL I've seen many people in line who mess up cards by bending them or marking too many or too few numbers, so that would be annoying during a very busy time, but it just sounds like too much bureaucracy to me.  It reads like this:

House Rules:

  • Sell Quick-Pick tickets ONLY at retailer discretion.
  • Wagers will be capped at 100 tickets per customer. If desired, customers may return to the end of the line for additional purchases.

Has anyone reading this ever been told by a retailer that only QuickPicks will be sold when the jackpot grows or the store is busy?

justxploring,

Before MegaMillions came to Ohio, when ever I went to Michigan to buy BigGame tickets the truck stop just across the boarder has similar rules when ever they had long lines of people buying tickets.  I ran into a similar situation in Indiana when I bought PowerBall tickets, but the  stores usually had two lines, one for QPs and one for play slips working with one terminal.  The stores usually made up a bunch of QPs ahead when ever they expected a crowd.  I started to drive a couple of miles farther where there weren't any lines, usually the long lines were at the retailers nearest the boarders.  I think most the out of stators are wiser now because when I bought my tickets at Scott Market in New Haven last evening, I  and another player had to wait for a clerk to show up at the terminal.  I never see a line any more even when the jackpot is $250M.

We don't have PB in NJ, it is a MM state.  However, PA is only 24 miles from my front door.  I have not seen long lines in years.  The busy places have two or three terminals.  The only time they build up is when the clerk doesn't know what do.  If it is a bad slip, the it shows the error.  ANother area I have had delays with is old machines.  Many times they have to put an additional slip behind the original in order for the machine to properly read.  I assume it is getting old and not being cleaned properly.

They have that rule in some places in South Carolina. Especially on the border where people don't have lotteries or don't have a specific game, the lines get very long, so that is the case here as well. I haven't seen a limit on number of tix purchased, but I have seen that you must get QP's in certain instances. I go about 5 miles down the road into a town called Fort Mill where there are no lines, and I can buy as many as I please and use my lotto club's numbers with no hassle.

I've also run across a similar reference somewhere. <sarcasm> It certainly is mighty generous of the lottery to let retailers enforce the retailer's own rules. </sarcasm> The way I read it, especially with the specific reference to a 100 ticket limit instead of just allowing a limit of the retailer's choosing, is that the lottery is "suggesting" that retailers enforce the lottery's rules. That's not authorizing, it's dictating.

Whatever they're selling, retailers always have to find a balance between accommodating the customer at the front of the line and any customers who are waiting behind that customer, but it should be the retailer's choice. The customers are always free to accept the rules or go elsewhere.  I've never seen a place with more than one terminal, and the longest line, people-wise, I've everpersonally seen is perhaps 10 people. That was at a convenince store where most of the people in the line were buying milk or bread rather than lottery tickets. The longest I've waited in line was behind some lone dimbulb that was playing 100 pick 4 numbers, written on a scrap of paper,  five minutes before the deadline.  As RJOh noted, stores that are just across the border are the ones that get extremely busy when the jackpots are huge. Besides driving a few more miles, you can often avoid the lines by shopping early. Just like people buying Christmas presents, a lot of lottery players (maybe the ones who are only playing because the jackpot is huge?) seem to wait until the afternoon of the drawing before buying their tickets. As an aside, if you've never driven from a dry county into one that sells alcohol you haven't really seen how being close to the border is good for business.

You realize that's the structure for Powerball everywhere, and not just Connecticut, right? The payout schedule is structured to inflate the fictitious jackpot they're advertising. If the payouts were the same every year the annuity they could buy would have a much lower total payout. By making smaller payments in the early years there is more principal to earn interest for the future payments. If you're patient enough (and stupid enough)  Powerball could offer you a jackpot of a billion dollars with the cash they actually have for buying the annuity, and your heirs would be very glad that's how you took the prize.

DoubleDown

Just drive a few more miles to the next exit and you may be pleasantly surprised.

For my PB tix, I can stop at the first exit ( Hardeeville, SC ) , but I go on to the Hilton Head exit, which is 3 more miles.

Why do I do it ?

Long lines, poor employee morale ( attitudes )at those stores just over the line, poor lighting if it is dark, difficult on-off ramps, etc...

Next exit = more modern stores, never a line, cheerful employees, etc...

My choice not to spend my time and money at the others.

When I use to go to Michigan to get BigGames tickets, half of the people standing in line were from Michigan and they usually only bought 1-5 tickets and I was buying tickets for all my co-workers.  Those people from Michigan had to know of other places with no lines but I figured they just wanted to be part of a crowd or a hindrance to out of state players.  Some people prefer to buy tickets at retailers that sell a lot of tickets thinking their customers are more likely to win something.

Yes, thank you. But I do understand the graduated payout they are offering. I have an life/annuities license in FL so I do know a little about them!  That's what I was trying to point out (the "fictitious jackpot" as you call it) although CASH ONLY has been on a mission since I've been on this board, so I probably didn't have to! LOL They are investing more and paying you less and trying to convince people that it is in their best "interest" (no pun intended)  But I didn't realize that the way they show it on the CT site is the same for every state. I thought the payout method was decided by the state and that some just divided the jackpot by 30, although I'd still take the lump sum. I guess I never really studied the PB rules carefully because I don't live in a PB state.

Exactly.  A Forgotten trait in some people.  It's your money, don't let people ruin the pleasure of spending it.  Go where they respect you.
