Powerball

The Powerball lottery jackpot for next Saturday will be worth an incredible $300 Million.

Even though the grand prize was not hit Wednesday evening, Powerball paid off in big ways.  Two lucky tickets in Montana and North Carolina won $800,000 cash with the Power Play option.

In addition, twelve tickets purchased in Arizona (4), Colorado (1), Idaho (1), North Carolina (3), Pennsylvania (2), and West Virginia (1) each won $200,000 for matching all 5 white numbers.

The jackpot for the Saturday, August 25th drawing will be an estimated $300 million with the cash option at $140.3 million.  The actual jackpot will be determined after all the actual ticket sales are tallied.  Most times when the jackpot is at this level, the actual jackpot is several million dollars higher than the estimate.

The numbers drawn Wednesday evening were 12, 37, 40, 48, 50, and the Powerball was 37. The Power Play multiplier was 4.

Ninty-one tickets matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Eighteen additional players of that prize level purchased the Power Play and had their prize multiplied by 4 for a $40,000 cash win.

A total of 1,534,613 tickets across the nation won more than $15.2 million in prizes playing "America's Game."

A total of 201,673 winning Powerball tickets multiplied their prize by 4 Wednesday. Players were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for $1. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2-5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased $67,189,265 in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.

The lotteries sold $2.5 billion in Powerball tickets in fiscal year 2007. That translates into over $725 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Wow, the breakdown of powerplay tickets to non-powerplay tickets is very interesting.  1,332,940 winning tickets without the powerplay, and only 201,673 with the powerplay.  I assume the ratio of total tickets purchased is about the same?  I really thought more people would be taking Powerplay.

My local news did a live remote from a lottery outlet at 10pm and announced a $200k ticket was purchased in Idaho.  I knew without checking my tickets that it wasn't me cuz I always always purchase the powerplay.

some people are so focused on winning the jackpot only that they would rather get another ticket instead of the powerplay.

Do you suppose the ratios change when the jackpot is smaller?

well less people play when it is smaller so people who only want the $200-$300million jackpots may wait until its higher to play. the people who play when it is $25million probably play more powerplays because they would be happy with the second or third tier prize multiplied by the powerplay
