Tennessee Lottery on the hot seat

Tennessee LotteryTennessee Lottery: Tennessee Lottery on the hot seat

Tennessee State Senator Jim Kyle, D-Memphis, has asked House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, D-Covington, and Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, to convene the Joint Lottery Oversight Committee "as soon as possible" to get the lowdown on recent "incidents" at the Tennessee Education Lottery.

This week it was reported that a misprint on Lotto 5, Cash 3 and Cash 4 tickets gave the wrong jackpot for last Saturday night's Powerball drawing. Instead of $15 million, the tickets showed $29 million. The Powerball jackpot shows up on tickets for other games to nudge folks into buying more Powerball tickets.

That slip-up followed other major gaffes, including the August "glitch" in the new computerized drawing system that spits out the Cash 3, Cash 4, and Lotto 5 numbers. The glitch kept duplicate numbers from coming up so people playing numbers like 1-1-2 or 4-4-4-4 had no chance of winning.

In a separate incident, the lottery printed the toll-free phone number of a sex chat line on marketing materials, so callers looking for numbers or information were greeted by a steamy adult sex chat offer instead.

In the ticket printing error and the computerized drawing system error, the lottery blamed vendors, but the lottery offered no specific explanation for the sex chat line mishap.

The lottery offered refunds or extra tickets to make up for the August computerized drawings glitch, and initially offered refunds to players with misprinted tickets.  But a day later the lottery took back their refund offer and said flatly that there would be no refunds because the odds were unchanged by the misprint.

The lottery did not, however, state how that would address the issue of players who bought extra tickets thinking the jackpot was higher than it actually was.  Instead, they said in other places, such as the lottery's web site, it was listed correctly.

Meanwhile, Kyle, who is the House Democratic leader, wants a report from lottery officials about the recent goofs and how they intend to prevent future screw-ups. A meeting of the joint committee hasn't been scheduled yet.

Kyle, who was a key supporter of the lottery in the runup to its approval by the Tennessee Legislature, is worried lottery players will lose confidence in the games and stop playing, leaving less money for lottery scholarships.

Maybe lottery officials should put Rob Briley on retainer for knocking lottery stories like this one off the front page.

[Editor:  Rob Briley is a Tennessee Representative who was arrested on a DUI charge this week, and forced from his position of chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.]

The TN Lottery is a joke and a cartoon now.  If they were an actual business in the private sector, they'd be out of business.

The state needs to fire every employee and start over again.

The only solution that Tennessee lottery players should accept is the dismissal of Ms Paul and the hiring of someone that is no nonsense that will re launch the games with mechanical drawings. Period.

        Call Senator Kyle !!!

Well, I believe that the tnlottery website will have to add a new section to their website called "ERRORS AND OMMISIONS".  Midday Cash 3 & 4 for 9/17 now have TWO sets of winning numbers for some reason.  No explanation has been given on the website yet, just the statement that there are two sets of winning numbers. It just keeps getting deeper, which is unfortunate for the people of Tennessee, even if the folks at the TEL deserve it.

this is a sick joke now the tennessee lottery not only messed again this time they give no explanation of what happened they just casually mention they are paying two sets of numbers for the middays draws. the lottery is so smug right now they feel like they dont owe the players an apology or explanation for this. im glad im boycotting playing the RNG because i tear up my losing tickets and if i clicked on the site to find the mysterious second set of numbers was one of my winning numbers i would be furious Mad. i can just imagine how people who threw away winners must feel right now. im going to check back during the day to see if they give the payout for each set of numbers and to see which one is higher.

This just gets more interesting by the day...    Stooges

Hey Rebecca, reflect back if you will to a day not too long ago when there were NO issues with the TN lottery. It all started with your brain dead decision to go RNG.

You had the state of TN by the tail and you decided to squeeze a little harder and you got bit.

It's been nice ( not ) to know ya. Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.

Rebecca got "out of Dodge" (Georgia) while the gettin' was good when Tennessee gave her an offer she couldn't refu$$$$$$$$$$e.  If her act were together Georgia sales wouldn't have been way down when she left.

She did as she pleased in Georgia oblivious to player input, seems to be doing the same to Tennessee players.  Old habits don't die, they just adapt according to what can be taken the greatest advantage to make that bonu$$$$.

                      Good luck to everyone!

The lottery has stated  that it switched to computer Rng to save money. 3 years ago Rng systems were on the market.

Why did lottery the spend over $120,000+ on ball machines that are now too expensive to run?

If Rebecca Paul is a lottery director "All star" making 3x the salary of any other lottery director why did she purchase ball machines

                        to begin with?
