Australian couple played the same numbers for 36 years

KYABRAM, Vic., Aus. — The overjoyed $10 million (US$10.5 million) winners of Thursday night's Australian Powerball game don't want to be named, but said they had been struggling to make ends meet on one income for years.

"It will be life-changing," they said.

They plan to use some of the money to secure their financial future and some to help out their family and friends.

The couple played the same numbers for 36 years across a variety of lotto games.

Australia's Powerball game is different than the United States' multi-state Powerball game, but is played in the same manner.  Players select five numbers from a pool of 45, and one Powerball number from a separate pool of 45.

Australia Powerball pays all jackpot prizes as lump-sum cash, and no taxes are withheld from the prize.

Just before the lucky couple got the news from a Tatts Lotteries official, they had a call from a relative asking if they knew who the unknown winner from Kyabram was.

"We didn't know who it was, or course, but we said we hoped it was someone in need of a windfall," they said.

They were just about to head down to the outlet which sold them the ticket, K and K Toys, when they got the call.

Outlet owner Kevin Bell said his shop had been unusually busy this morning with people coming in hoping that they had been the unknown winner.

"A few people have been joking this morning that they'll be looking out for someone driving a new car. But I think if I won that sort of money I'd be keeping it quiet too," Mr Bell said.

K and K Toys has previously sold 22 first division winners, but the biggest amount won until now had been $3.3m.

I do the same thing but I hope it doesn't take me 36 dadgum years to win the big one.

I could be almost as old as tiggs by then.

And people don't look very good at that age.

Hell, tiggs looks like the north end of a mule goin' south.

And  Stack47 told me it was silly to play the same numbers for 32 years.

Wow! Hearing about this, 36 years, will surely keep him up all night.  Poor guy.

I do like these stories. The good part is their identity is kept private, as it should be.

Maybe he meant it in a generic sense, like anything done by a man wearing women's clothes looks silly.

And it is. Surely you've watched Monty Python?

And just how does this discursive comment on my Avatar shed any light on my post that you referenced?

So, question: Do you give your phone number when you pick your numbers? How does the lottery office know to call these people before these people know they've won?

Congrats to the winners! I'm happy to see someone in need win anytime. White Bounce

I think anybody who plays the lottery in Australia has to be registered with the government and they give you a card or something to swipe everytime you play.

Probably rules out a lot of potential problems but I don't like giving the government anymore info about me than absolutely necessary. Especially the government we have now. The less they know about me, the better I like it.

We do! It just depends on what state you play in! Like my state of Delaware I can choose if I wish to be anonymous or to go public!

Great news! Hurray! This huge win suggests that rewards will follow on from hard work, and from playing the same numbers year after year. In this case 36 years.

I am a student of numerology and love numbers. The #36 is an intellectual number of POWER AND STRENGTH. And people connected to #36 are likely to achieve alot in their lives.

The #36 reduces to the #9. It is worth mentioning that according to The Lottery Code, the ancient Hebrews believed the #9 to be the number of God. Blue Angel

its not mandatory. now half the lotto are privately owned , its handing your info over to private companies not the gov.

dunno whats more scary the gov having the info or private corps?

anyhow, we can allegedly get our prize, if we lose the ticket, as long as we registerd the purchase on a members card.  good plan if you ask me.

Big govts., big corps., there's no difference. They both can't be trusted. In fact, they collaborate against the ordinary folk. The less they know about you the better.
