Everyone has favorite numbers, but this is ridiculous.
On Oct. 3, 11 players bought Mass Cash tickets with the numbers 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9. All of the nine who have claimed their $100,000 prizes picked the numbers themselves rather than letting the lottery computer pick random numbers.
Lottery officials said some winners said they played that combination because it represents five Red Sox players whose retired numbers hang above right field at Fenway Park: Bobby Doerr, Joe Cronin, Johnny Pesky, Carl Yastrzemski and Ted Williams.
The winners were Carol Madill of Marshfield, Sharon Carreira of East Bridgewater, Mary Hoffman of Gardner, William Mehl of West Bridgewater, Sandra Langley of Everett, Kimberly Nizza of Malden, William Perry of New Bedford, Peter Lynch of Quincy and Joseph Caruso of Somerville.
The odds of those numbers being picked? One in 324,632.
And it happened on the last day of Boston's dismal 2012 season. Apparently no one in this group was tempted to play 14 and 2, the score of the team's 93rd and final loss of the season.

Thanks to rdgrnr for the tip.
Mass Cash actually has among the best odds in the country for hitting $100k.
I hit on this game all the time.
WOW! That is a cool story! I am really surprised MORE people didn't play those numbers with them hanging up right in the ball park.
I like the game too but its been like forever since I last won anything in it. Maybe soon.
Keep pluggin' away.
I only come down your way once a week, and I almost always hit for at least three numbers ($10).
I usually buy just 5 QP's.
The head of Ted is NOT dead.....................
I will schedule a flight to MA to buy some tickets.
QPsssssss,
Congratulations observant ones ... FUN!
I did a search for those 5 numbers in all states for all past history and the results say that is the first and only time they have come up together in a Pick5 anywhere.
I probably wouldn't have played them myself.
Doh!
It used to be possible to to buy season tickets for Mass Cash from out of state. But they started having daily draws and stopped selling season tickets for it. The good thing is you can buy advanced plays for 30 games when you visit. Good luck.
Let me know which numbers you want to play, I'll pick up some spooky numbers for you.
