$320 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot goes through the roof

Powerball

13th-largest US jackpot ever; 9th-largest cash value

By Todd Northrop

For only the 17th time in the history of United States lotteries, a lottery jackpot run-up has crossed into $300 million+ territory.

The new high-water mark of $320 million for the current Powerball jackpot was achieved after no winning tickets were sold for Wednesday night's $260 million grand prize.

The lump-sum cash payout value of Wednesday's Powerball jackpot is $198.3 million.  After-tax cash and annuity prize amounts are reported state-by-state on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.

This is the largest Powerball jackpot since Nov. 28, 2012, when 2 tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri split a $587.5 million Powerball jackpot (see Record $587.5 million Powerball jackpot won by 2 tickets, Lottery Post, Nov. 29, 2012).

Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.

The mammoth prize is the result of 12 consecutive draws without a winner.  The run-up started as a $40 million prize on February 9, 2013.

The winning numbers for Wednesday, March 20, 2013 were 13, 14, 17, 43, and 54, with Powerball number 15.

Even though nobody won the jackpot Wednesday, 3 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Florida, 1 from Kentucky, and 1 from Ohio.

None all the second-prize winners purchased their tickets with the Power Play option for an extra $1, which would have doubled their second prize payout to $2 million.

74 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 10 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $40,000.

Following the Wednesday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $60 million from its previous amount of $260 million. The cash value was raised by $37.2 million from its previous amount of $161.1 million.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, any non-jackpot prize is increased according to a fixed prize schedule, which can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.

Powerball is now played in 42 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.  Tickets cost $2 each.

On April 8, California will join the Powerball game, becoming the 43rd state to play the game. After California joins the game, Powerball will be available for purchase in every U.S. state that operates a lottery.

A 44th Powerball state will be added some time in the next year, as the state of Wyoming has approved a new state lottery with the intention of joining Powerball and other multi-state games.  (See Wyoming officially becomes 44th state with a lotteryLottery Post, Mar. 14, 2013.)

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time

Saturday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 13th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States.  That position may rise before the drawing Saturday night, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

If nobody wins Saturday, it's anyone's guess how high it will go.

Since many lottery winners collect their winnings in cash, the lump-sum payout is an important measure of what a winning ticket could be worth.

a lump sum payout of $198.3 million, that ends up being about $99.4 million after goverment confiscation.

$198.3 million x 39.6 (federal income tax) x 10.8 (state income tax) x 3.8 (obamacare tax) + $8.56 million (deduction for state tax) equals about $99.4 million.

Well, on the bright side it'll probably at least be an even 100M before the drawing.

If you win the jackpot, 25% will be withheld by the lottery office before you even receive the check. The rest of the taxes will be due April 2014. If you need help doing your 2014 taxes after winning Powerball, call me. I'll be happy to help.

A Californian might win this jackpot. No one is stopping Californians from driving to Oregon or Arizona to get Powerball tickets.

notice how top 4 record jackpots  have more then 1 winner

out of top top 10"number 9th without a winner atm"  6 of them have  2 or more winners

if this baby rolls, going by mega chart shows it going to 500m range

1 rollover away form a other godly monster.  now we 320m i think we start seeing media reports slowly come in

it it rolls,  they will ofc market it 400m whatever,  we know once they market it anything 400m . it  sends lotto fever into everyone and they go right to 500/600 range

we have at lest 3rd largest jackpot in history if it rolls past this one

i think with only 2,  5-0 winners this last draw, its just matter of luck of numbers fallin

as we sure won't past 50% of all number combo's sold,

and 2 person who said 99m atfer all taxes, wrong ,  try 119m atfer full 39.6 full rate,

also   don't u dare put obamacare tax in here,  that don't apply here,  bro, that's for freaking   tax on investment income.

why the tax is bad, applying it 2 something as a lottery win is madness in accounting error.

govt can have there 70m + in taxes, if your getting 119m

u ,your kids, your future grind kids, and the great grind kids can live  off of this thing

100m invested into near anything decent and safe will see a nice return

u can even  spend 19m   buy everyone u love a nice little home/car.whatever

invest the rest at like 4% or anything return rates, and i don't know how the hell u can blow that. wait i do................

just ask Andrew “Jack” Whittaker . that man found out how to waste 315 million jackpot

here the sad part, he was rich before the win, mwhahahaha

how in hell he did it is sure amazing to read. look him up in lottery post search,

A lot of people refer to the "Obamacare tax", but the correct name is the Net Investment Income Tax. Lottery winnings are not, and never have been, viewed by the IRS as investment income. The tax applies to the lesser of net investment income or adjusted gross income beyond a threshold.

Everything I've seen indicates that the name is accurate, and it's only investment income that will matter. If anyone has seen a legitimate source reporting that the tax will apply to lottery (or other gambling) winnings I'd be happy to look at it, but if lottery winnings are treated as investment income it may open the door for claiming some lottery winnings at the capital gains rate. I can promise that the IRS would rather tax a jackpot at 39.6% than 20% plus 3.8%.

That means that unless the IRS starts treating lottery winnings as investment income nobody is going to pay the tax on lottery winnings unless their lottery winnings plus everything else that contributes to their AGI is less than their investment income. That means that somebody with an AGI of more than $125 to 250k (depending on filing status) including a reported win of $1000 and investment income of more than $1000 will pay an extra $38. If they won $10k and had more than $10k from investment income they'd pay $380. If they won $100 million and had investment income of $100k they'd pay $3,800.

You should read up on federal income tax and how it came about. People like me? what's that supposed to mean? I've never taken a dime from the government in my life. I'm someone who wants to keep most of what I won, depending on the state you live, that isn't possible.

An interesting trend observation to share with everyone. Yesterday was yet another draw with some closely bunched numbers. It's been quite the run of draws with a number delta of 4 or less (30 of the last 31 or 97%) since the beginning of December. That could change at any time of course, but I'll be picking my numbers within this trend for Saturday in hopes this continues.

Good luck everyone! Here's hoping there will be a JP or 5 of 5 winner from LP this Saturday!

I will have my ticket for this drawing but only a few dollars. The jackpot when it reaches this level becomes more of a fantasy than usual, even though the odds remain the same.  It's more money than most can comprehend and frankly more than anyone really needs. Most of the money would probably remain in the bank earning interest unless you just go out and blow it all, which would take some effort, unless you're buying art in the millions of dollars range.

What would I do with the money? That is the usual question people ask themselves or others that win this type of jackpot. Well, I would First remain 100% anonymous, contact a tax attorney and claim it in a blind trust. I would take it in cash, of course. I would then put about $70 million in the bank in tax-free bonds....The other $30 million, I would buy real-estate, A Lamborghini, Porsche 911 turbo, Ferrari and a Mercedes SLR Mclaren, about $1 million or so in wheels. All vacations I would fly private or first class. I would still have millions left over from the $30 million not in the bank. As you can see, it's more than you would ever need unless you just blow it on multi-million dollar art or give most of it away to charity. If you don't spend or give it away, it just winds up sitting in the bank earning interest.

I really hope it's me receiving the $100 million+ deposit in the bank a couple weeks from now. If not, I hope it's one of YOU guys! I really do!

Good luck to all. Someone's life will change forever. This is the jackpot dreams are made of. Now go out there, get a few tickets and win this thing!!

Thumbs Up

I'd share some with my family and close friends, buy a home and furnishings, take a vacation, get a new car, pay off the bills, and put some money in my pocket. Then I'd take half and invest long term and the other half and invest for income. Oh yeah, I can't forget to pay those dam taxes!!!

Thanks golfer! If you win, I'm sure you could buy a few new TV's and find some change left over for a nice vacation and some new clubs. LOL

For fairness reasons though, the government might limit you to only 1 new TV and 1 vacation a year though...it wouldn't be fair otherwise, dontcha know.  Crazy

Good luck to ya golfer!

It still may, however, I don't feel it'll do that this time... Doesn't seem to be quite as much hype around here... I think people over did it on the last 2 jackpots and didn't have a return like they expected.  The people that normally don't play lotto are probably waiting for one more raise before going all in.... Just my opinion though.. well see how it plays out!!

Whoever is the lucky winner of this jackpot would be able to experience Musha-Cay. An Island(s) in the bahamas owned by magician David Copperfield. The website has some amazing videos of the resort. It's a bit pricey at $37,500 a night (4 night minimun) but that would be pocket change to the winner.

Imagine spending time at this amazing resort with your closest family/friends. Amazing!

I think you're right.  There has been very little excitement about this jackpot.  I think it needs to get to $500 million or more before all the news outlets cover the story.  The only news story I saw recently was about a janitor (I think in Chicago) winning $1 milloin.  Still, that's not too shabby.  I'd gladly like to win a million dollars on a $2 investment.  Yes Nod

If I won a HUGE POWERBALL Jackpot, I would do these things (I think/maybe):

1.  Buy a New House (large but not a mansion-property taxes and maintenance would be astronomical!)

2.  Go on a Vacation (to figure out how to deal with the sudden wealth and let it sink in a little)

3.  Help pay off some relatives' student loans (nice gesture to family)

4.  Adopt a few dogs (you can save lives and get unconditional love in return)

Cheers

Actually, nobody likes paying taxes. That's just natural. What people like him want is the "rich" taxed of their earnings. In the name of fairness (equality of outcomes) and to redistribute the wealth. Where does this mindset come from? The marxist universities, the liberal media, jealousy and a belief the the rich somehow got over due to immoral ways. While some have, most work harder, longer and frankly have a higher IQ than the dull masses. Their lack of success makes them feel inferior and the only way you can get back is to tax the rich on their money and give it away to the lame and lazy.  It's not polite or politically-correct to say this, but that's it in a nutshell.

I respecfully disagree. People, lottery winners, go completely broke because they are idiots. An example would be David Edwards who won the Powerball back in 2001. He could have lived like a king but went broke not because he bought nice things and vacations but because he kept buying and buying and buying and buying until every last penny was spent.  If you just won $100 million jackpot and you spend $150,000 on a vacation that's not even close to going broke...that's enjoying an amazing vacation and living it up. You have barely even touched the principal and you would still be earning thousands of dollars in interest daily, every...single....day. People go broke because they don't plan and don't use their brain or a calculator. Equating taking a lavish vacation after winning $100 million to "that's how people go broke" is a logical fallacy.

Just my thoughts.

LOL

I find it odd and a little funny that some of you here seem to think that once you win a lottery jackpot of this size that you're supposed to place it in the bank, leave it there (don't touch!) and go about your life normally, as you are living now. Nobody suggested that you "blow through your money" that's for idiots like David Edwards. We are talking about things we would do if we won, which is the entire point of playing in the first place. To buy and do things you would never have been able to do before.  If however, you're like one of the above mentioned sad souls who can find a way to win millions and blow through every....last....dime, well, you've got bigger problems then taking the cash option vs the annuity.

You're correct in one aspect... My bank balance won't mean anything to me when I'm dead.... Except knowing that my children will inherit what I have.... Now, I'm not saying a couple years after I win I won't do any crazy spending, but I know myself, and I know if I live lavishly with my newfound riches that I will easily adapt to that lifestyle... And then that's where I could go broke.... No matter how much money you have, there's always somebody willing to take it all right from under your feet..... And that's my 2 cents :)

This 3.8% tax is not only applied to investment income but will also be factored in on both earned and unearned income. This tax is solely implemented to support the affordable health care law which is the main reason most refer to it as "Obamacare tax".

I have not seen publications for the 2014 Federal taxes yet but we will all be paying close attention to how the Government clarifies "unearned income".

My browser doesn't allow me to cut and paste the different examples I found but there are many sites online that explain the 3.8% tax and it is not limited to just investments.

I think I would put half of that money in a charitable trust.

My 3 largest charities would be:

1.) Setting up safe havens in every state (more locations) so people will give up a baby vs not having it or injuring it.

2.) Work with charities to come up with a master plan to reduce the homeless pet adoption (no kill methods) and develop a nation wide system for moving homeless pets out of kill shelters to temporary homes when their time is up.

3.) Help for the elderly in staying in their own homes as long as possible and more good housing for low income elderly.

Of course, my apartment in Paris is still on the table.

That's because a huge surge of extra people are playing, not to mention most regular lottery players are doubling and even tripling their

regular bets because of the swelling jackpot.

The odds of getting a second place prize are virtually about the same as when the jackpot is only at $40 million.

Although most who toss in the extra dollar, will do so no matter what the size of the jackpot.
