Minnesota Lottery to change policy after 6 major unclaimed prizes this year

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Officials with the Minnesota State Lottery said Wednesday they are changing their policy on information for winning lottery tickets after as many as six major prizes this year have gone unclaimed.

Lottery officials said, effective immediately, they will disclose the name, address and city of the business where a winning lottery ticket is sold. In the past, the lottery has only released the county in which the ticket was sold.

The new policy applies to six unclaimed prizes that amount to a combined $419,900.

Those prizes include two Minnesota Millionaire Raffles for $100,000 each. They were sold Jan. 1 and the Lake Elmo Oil on Stillwater Blvd. N. in Lake Elmo and the Stop-N-Go in Breckenride.

There were also three Northstar Cash jackpots. The first was for $27,000 on May 27 at Orton's Point Tesoro in East Grand Forks, the second was for $26,000 on May 28 at the Eveleth Short Stop in Eveleth and the third was for $66,900 on June 26 at a Super America in Minneapolis.

The final unclaimed prize is for $100,000 from a Sunday night All or Nothing drawing at a Holiday station in Waconia.

The Minnesota State Lottery urges players, especially those at the locations above, to check their old tickets. The state legislature took notice of the issue when a $1 million Powerball prize went unclaimed in March.

Winners have one year to claim their money, otherwise it goes to the state's General Fund.

Where on earth do you get the idea they would ever reveal someone's ss#?

The lottery commission would never reveal someone's ss#. That would open them up to legal liability if if was used for fraud.

They should also introduce a player registration card and offer a subscription service. Both would benefit player and raise additional revenue for the state.

Don't know why keeping the winnings is a problem for the Minnesota Lottery, but I believe the reason they want to name the stores and locations is because they don't know the name, address, or have a picture of the winner.

Very few people win one prize over $50,000, but there are people who don't even check them. Should we feel sorry for them when the ticket expires?

A Lotterywest Player’s Card can:

  • make it easy to receive any prizes you win
  • store your favourite numbers
  • provide you with some protection if you lose your ticket

How it works

Claiming your prize

With a Lotterywest Player’s Card, it doesn’t matter if you forget to check your numbers. Any prizes will be automatically sent to you five weeks after the draw, provided they have not already been claimed.

However, it’s still important you keep your tickets in a safe place, to make sure no one else claims any winnings before we deposit into your account or send you a cheque.

Favourite numbers

You can store a set of favourite numbers with your Player’s Card for each of the Lotto games plus Soccer Pools and Cash 3. Hand your card along with a playslip to your Lotterywest retailer and let them know you want to record your favourite numbers with your card.

Anytime you wish to change your favourite numbers, simply fill out a new playslip and ask your retailer to update your favourite numbers on your Player’s Card.

How do I join?

Fill out the application form attached to the Players Card Brochure or download here and hand it to your retailer with a one-off $10 registration fee. You will also need to provide identification – a list of acceptable identification is also available in the Players Card Brochure.

Your retailer will take a copy of your application and send it to Lotterywest. Keep the original, along with the application form number, until you receive your personalised Lotterywest Player’s Card. The application form number is your reference should you have any queries before you receive your card. Your card should arrive within four weeks.

What else do I need to know?

  • You must be 16 years of age or older to become a Lotterywest Player’s Card member and to purchase any Lotterywest product.
  • Although you can’t register a syndicate or group with your card, you can nominate a syndicate name to appear on the card.
  • Lotterywest can only pay out cheques or credit the bank account of an individual, not a syndicate or company name.

Lost or stolen tickets and Player's Cards

If you lose a ticket you have registered on your Player’s Card, please contact Lotterywest Customer Services as soon as possible. You will need to provide them with your details plus any specific information on when and where you bought your ticket plus what game and type of ticket it was. If the ticket is a winner and providing it hasn’t already been claimed, we can ensure that the winnings are not claimed by anyone else.

If you lose your Player’s Card, please call Lotterywest Customer Services as soon as possible and we will arrange for a new card for you.

Updating your details

If you need to change any of the details associated with your Player’s Card, including:

  • Name
  • Address or
  • Payment details

Call Lotterywest Customer Services and they will let you know what information you need to provide and assist you to make the change.
