A Port Orange, Florida, father and son accused of stealing $300 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets from a convenience store didn't have much luck, Volusia sheriff's investigators said.

Robert Carbonell, 54, and his son, Robert Carbonell Jr., 28, were caught on Saturday after video surveillance at the store showed the older Carbonell coming back to the store to cash in a $90-winning ticket, arrest reports state.

The father was being held Monday on $19,000 bail and the was locked up without bail, records show. They are each charged with felony retail theft.

The father was previously out on $10,000 after he was accused of grand theft auto in May, court records show.

Records show the younger Carbonell was out on $1,500 after Daytona Beach arrested for stealing men's clothes from Sears in December. Also, in December Port Orange police filed grand theft charges on Carbonell Jr. after his girlfriend at the time accused him of stealing her iPhone and purse valued at more than $1,000, records show.

The incident occurred last week Monday at the Circle K, 1800 S. Nova Road, near Daytona Beach, but a store manager discovered the theft during an inventory of lottery tickets, investigators said.

While doing an inventory of the scratch-off lottery tickets on Tuesday, the manager discovered that $300 worth of tickets that included six Lucky $200,000/year and nine $600 million Gold Rush lottery tickets were missing, arrest reports show.

The manager reviewed the store's surveillance video and saw that on Monday, the older Carbonell distracted a store clerk when the store employee took out the trash. As the father engaged the store clerk outside in conversation, his son is seen crossing over the counter and stealing the lottery tickets, deputies said.

On Friday, the father came back to the store to cash in on a ticket that won him $90. After being told that the the Carbonells possibly lived behind the Walmart on Beville Road, deputies approached South Daytona police for help, reports state.

A South Daytona police officer, familiar with the Carbonells, identified them. Deputies tracked the Carbonells to a June Terrace home near Daytona Beach. The homeowner took deputies to a back room where they saw the younger Carbonell trying to jump out of the house but both were caught, reports detail.

Robert Carbonell Jr. told deputies that they "did all this work for some stupid lottery tickets," deputies wrote in their report.

Don't these people know that the tickets can be tracked.  A hot ticket is a fast trip to jail no matter who cashes it in

they are going to have to explain how they got it.  I can't believe he went back to the same store to cash it in.   Sad.

" Can't believe he went back to the same store".. reminds me of a amateur thief a few years ago who handed a bank teller a piece of paper demanding money- she handed it over and the cops were at his house in less than 15 mins while he was counting his haul.. The guy had written his demand for cash on the back of  his personal deposit slip.

In some states, retailers only cash tickets from their stores. Wink
