DENVER, Colo. — The Aurora, Colorado, woman who won a $3.3 million jackpot last Friday was still in shock when she came into the Denver claims office a week later, according to state lottery officials.
Identified only by her first name, Yahnique, the big winner purchased the winning ticket at King Soopers located at 1155 South Havana in Aurora.
The winning numbers were 10, 14, 25, 30, 31, and 32. Her total earnings? $3,312,287.
Yahnique had just resigned from her job as a certified nursing assistant.
"My last day was January 17, but I didn't have anything lined up yet," she said.
Yahnique says she's been playing the lottery for over 30 years. When she asked her husband Bruce to check the computer for the winning numbers, he said he thought it was a practical joke.
"I was highly suspicious but then I thought, there's no way she could mock up their whole website," said Bruce. "I mean, she knows her way around the computer. But not that well."
The couple, who has three sons, will receive a total of 25 annuity payments.
State lottery officials say the couple has immediate plans to pay bills and make home improvements.

Following payments increase 3.7% each year until the entire amount is paid. The choice you make is binding and irrevocable. You have 60 days from the date your ticket is validated to decide how you want to be paid."

As a health care provider I am so happy to read about her good fortune. The average Joe Blow has not clue on how difficult these jobs are. The hours are very long and demanding and so many state and federal regulations. We cannot hold onto Nurses where I work and am told it is a nationwide problem. We have plenty of my types, Respiratory Therapists, wish some of the bozos I work with would quit. The barrel gets dregged for some of them let me assure you.

After factoring 25% federal and 4% state taxes her first year payment will be for $58,793 and her second year with the 3.7% increase will be $60,968. This is a slight let down as 25 equal payments would have been $132,491 before taxes. I'm not a big fan of annuities that are heavily back end loaded and would have opted for the cash value.

In both Massachusetts and Kentucky lotteries, they said when I come to collect my winning and am @ the right time I can watch the drawing for whatever lottery they have then. Doubter Danny would never even inquire into something like this.

She's a CNA, as long as there are hospitals and/or nursing homes in her city, she can land another job in the matter of days. They're in short supply across the country, the job sucks and the pay isn't wonderful, but you can get flexible work hours and there's always job security. The best/ambitious CNAs simply do it to get experience while they go for their LPN or RN licenses, so it's a high turnover position however you slice it.

I would have taken the annuity. Colorado's cash option is only 50% of the annuity jackpot. If a married Colorado resident took the cash option of a $3.3m, they would have $990,000 after taxes, less than a third of the jackpot.
I realize that her husband probably has a job, but if he didn't, their marginal federal tax rate would have only been 15%, with the effective federal of 10%. They would have been getting a refund if the lottery took 25% for federal taxes. A first payment of say, $83,000 would have netted $70,820 after federal and state taxes.
Still, they can defer taxes with 401Ks and deductible IRAs.
The annual annuity will be more than double her salary as a certified nursing assistant. Increasing annual annuity payments will ease them comfortably into retirement as long as they maintain a middle-class lifestyle. The only problem will be annuity settlement sales people and money grubbing family.
