Half-billion jackpot comes 6 years after first reaching the same level
By Todd Northrop
Six years to the day after becoming the first lottery in history to feature a $500 million jackpot, the multi-state Mega Millions game is right back at the same level, offering a $502 million grand prize to be drawn Friday evening.
During that nascent period in 2012, when the word "billion" first entered lottery jackpot discussions, Mega Millions tickets were being sold so quickly that the lotteries were forced to raise the jackpot estimate nearly every day.
The event was so momentous that Lottery Post's news article announcing the momentous jackpot became the headline news story on the Drudge Report, one of the Internet's biggest news aggregators. (See screenshot below.)
Fast-forward to today, and a lottery jackpot now has to grow to at least $500 million before it can even break into the top-10. (See top-25 annuity and cash value jackpots below.)
Despite the changing perception of what makes a big lottery jackpot, the simple fact is that the multi-state Mega Millions lottery game currently boasts a swelling jackpot of more than a half-billion dollars that could instantly put someone among the wealthiest people on the planet.
It has taken 23 drawings without a jackpot winner to get to this point. The current jackpot run-up began Jan. 9 as a $40 million prize.
Friday's $502 million jackpot is the 4th-largest in the game's history, and the 10th-largest United States lottery jackpot of all time.
The lump-sum cash value of $301 million is the 11th-largest on the all-time US lottery jackpot cash value list.
Lottery players wondering what all the cash will look like in their bank account after federal and state taxes are taken out can see an after-tax analysis of the current Mega Millions jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Jackpot Analysis page.
The rush of ticket sales over the next few days likely will propel the jackpot to an even higher amount before the drawing takes place Friday. Lottery Post and USA Mega will update the jackpot tallies displayed if such an increase occurs.
In Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing, there was no jackpot winner, but 2 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Illinois and 1 from New Jersey.
Unfortunately, none of the second-prize winners purchased their ticket with the Megaplier option for an extra $1 per play. If they had, their prize would have been increased to $3 million, because the Megaplier number drawn was 3.
The Megaplier option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Megaplier is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all lottery prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
Also, a total of 42 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Of those tickets, 3 were purchased with the Megaplier option, increasing the prize to $30,000, and 6 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing was $9,056.
The Mega Millions winning numbers for Tuesday, March 27, 2018, were 7, 25, 43, 56, and 59, with Mega Ball number 13. The Megaplier number was 3.
Following the Tuesday drawing, the Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate was raised $44 million from its previous amount of $458 million. The cash value was raised by $27 million from its previous amount of $274 million.
Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.
Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time
Friday's Mega Millions jackpot currently stands as the 10th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States. That position may rise before the drawing, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

Now that jackpot fever has started, It will probably be hit on Friday. Just hope I having a winning ticket or tickets. Good luck everybody!
$301 million cash... give Uncle Samuel his 37%... $189 Million + change take home .... Yeah, I can live on that
You know when you look at this list it's so weird to see that some annuities have a higher cash prize while being in itself a lower amount for instance the 2016 MM (#6 for Cash) has a lower annuity amount than the #9 2013 MM even though the 2013 was a whole 100M (annuity) greater. Anyways I believe this jackpot will see a winner for Friday in Maryland or Tuesday VA.
Cool! I'll head over to Maryland to get a ticket there too! Thanks for the heads up where it will win.
Keep contributing to the jackpot folks, I promise to give a Heart felt thank you when I go to claim it.
Uh just remember that I'm saying that I THINK ( or perhaps in some mysterious way I know....dun...dun.....dunnnn) that is where the next winner we be from. 1/46 of a chance for each day :D
The $1M winning ticket that was sold in IL was sold at a Shell station on the south side of Rochelle. That's only a block or so from where my grandparents lived for decades :) Ive been to that station dozens of times, even re-met one of my childhood friends there that I'd been out of contact with for like 10 years! Hopefully somebody in that neighborhood was the lucky winner and not a passer-by on the interstate
Now is the time to play PB :-)
About $15,200,000 after taxes...
I would be more than happy to ride off into the sunset if I won PB or Cal SuperLotto ($7.7 million) tonight.
Redd55-Either or both will suit me just fine. We still get to saunter on white shores..
What has not escaped my notice, is the fact that most of the recent winners and 2nd prize awards have gone to individuals in States East of the Rockies. Meaning: The next jackpot win is coming out of a State West of the Rockies. Yeah, you know it, but are afraid to say it out loud. But, l understand.
I remember I was a new lp member when the Jackpot was that high 6 years ago. Crazy and entertaining times with Mirlande claiming she hid the ticket at McDonald's, etc. Still the best crazy lottery story and event ever! So many nuts were posting claiming they won that jp. Never since has a jp stirred up the crazies on that level.
That actually reminds me of the time some woman from Ohio cleveland suburbs claimed that she had also lost a ticket cant really remember the exact date but her step daughter lived across the street from me at the time. I was still a child so I had no idea what was actually going on nor did I understand the seriousness of her claiming to loose the ticket. What I do remember is that after the true winners came forward the family was super embarrassed.
As a edit to my last post her name was Elicia Battle. Next time Im in Cleveland I should link up with my old neighbor so we can laugh about this
lolol.. Thanks for the reminder A... That woman was nuttier than an an outhouse rat... I had forgotten all about her... that was 6 years ago already ? Man is time flying by.
It was the only time I ever watched the live drawing of the mm balls. I recall thinking...I really do not want to win this jp. Now I feel very prepared and lp educated to deal with it. People were going crazy over that jp and you could feel it in the air. Lol
We have lucky for life... 1st prize = around that $7.7 amount
2nd is about 500,000
It’s RNG
The number 23 was both the Mega-number and one of the five drawn for that record making draw. I believe that the record jackpot reached $656 million.
Mirlande Wilson will be remembered for her deception. I would assume that she lost her job at McDonald's. She said that she hid the winning ticket inside the restaurant but later changed her story. She said that she purchased the winning ticket separately from the pool of tickets that she bought for her co-workers. This case would have been in the court system for at least a year.
In that separate story about Elicia Battle, she guessed the time of purchase correctly. So the police believed her story. Elicia edged out Michael Jackson for a short time in the local news. Like her last name says, Battle, she boxed professionally. She grew up fighting the local toughs before turning pro. She later confessed to the lie she told everyone.
Artist77, I will claim here in California by requesting minimal publicity. I have just watched an episode of Insight that dealt with con-artists. Dr. Phil did the same thing. The con-artists took advantage of lonely adults who visited dating websites.
There is no upside to going public with a win this size. You do not know who will see you and plan to cheat you out of your winnings.
But I will consider telling Todd and see if he would like me to write a few words on this website.
Good Luck!!
Sorry to disappoint you, I couldn't contribute to the jackpot the stars know I tried.
I got 4 numbers correct Megaball I have is 03 not 13 almost hit 30k but I'm grateful
Almost made history for Lotterypost!!!
I'm pretty sure is a sign that I will win the jackpot this Friday or soon!
I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
Good Luck
Hmmm Music. l on the other hand, will tell No One. No press,no slipping notes to this or that person, no whispering in anyone's ears. No words on any website. l will simply slip away! l want to be first in elusiveness.
Nah, it'll be yet another big winner from the Massachusetts/ New Hampshire part of the country.
noise-gate, Here in beautiful California when you win the jackpot your name, the name of the store where you got the ticket, the name of the city, the amount won, and the name of the game will be given to the press and anyone else who wants to know.
Ask Marvin and Mae Acosta who won in Chino Hills, CA. They were the co-winners of the record Power Ball jackpot. They have disappeared.
Naaaooooooooooo.... TEXAS.... eastern part, single winner
DC is wayyyy overdue for a major jp win.
Texas. Mmmm BBQ!
Good Luck, CDanaT! We need an LP member with a BIG win.
music*,
Not sure if you know but noise-gate is in California.
OK, let's say a California winner happens to be a Korean from Arirang Town (little Korea) in LA........Mr Lee, you can start looking for him in LA at Olympic and Vermont.
There's a place in Seoul called Sorak mountain. The Koreans have a joke that if you go to the top of the mountain and throw a rock down on to the street you're going to hit a Park, Kim, Lee, or a Chung in the head. (very few of what we call last names).
//////////////
I hope there's several winners and I really hope one of them is in New Hampshire and insists on remaining anonymous, just like the last NH winner.....could get very interesting.
Those were good times!!! LOL!!!
Congrats on the win.
$1,500 is a nice return on a 415 investment!
If it hits a billion, we may get to go to crazy town again!
Grand Elephants notwithstanding- you may have a point there msharkey2001. But, l think not.
l am aware of the degree of difficulty in concealing one's identity in this State Music, but l am not going to make it easy for anyone. For one, l purchase all my tickets outside my neighborhood. I can always deny that it's me. I will attempt to see if l could get away with using my first two initials , but leave my last name intact. That gives me room to "lie" if it comes to that. But there is no way l am putting my mug out there, ain't gonna happen, not in this life or in that to come.l will quit my job within a month, and instruct my attorneys to collect my check within 3 months, long after they have cleaned up the confetti.
Coin Toss: On the Sorak Mountain joke. It' s been said that if you stand in the center of Mexico City and shout out " Maria" pedestrian traffic will grind to a halt, and 90% of the females will turn around in your direction.
Better than ours. Starts at $7 mil goes up a mil every draw which is twice a week. Second prize is less than $40k and goes down significantly from there.
The other perfect concealment name is "Singh" - all the males in that religion carry that name.Should one of them win a massive jackpot, it's a needle in a haystack search. Might as well forget about it.
Pennsylvania hasn't hit for a while ............
PA had winning Powerball ticket worth $456.7 million last week.
No mega number, but how much did you win total with the Megaplier? Congrats
noise-gate,
We sad a guy named Jose Garcia on our crew in Vegas. He was from Albuquerque and said one time the cops pulled up to an apartment complex and a bunch of guys were playing basketball. They all started laughing and the cops wanted to know why and they said, "!2 if us here, 8 are named Jose Garcia."
Thank you, Good luck
Thanks
$1500.00
Without Megaplier would have been 500
Beware of what you wish for. Do you know yourself well enough to handle hundreds of millions of dollars? When you win will you seek financial advice?
Start with your Bank. Most bankers are honest although they may have a hidden agenda to sell you their products.
Do you know how to hire a Certified Financial Planner? An excellent one.
Do you know any Trust & Estate Attorneys? He/She will create a Revocable Living Trust so that when you die your Estate does not go through probate.
You will need insurance and all types of it.
Death and taxes. You will need a CPA.
You thought that you would be on easy street. "More money, More problems," said by a Rapper.
Willing to take the risks jejeje
I prolly wouldn't know what to do, but to be safe maybe dig a hole and bury most of it and if anybody asks for $$ just raise my shoulders "I don't know"
Nonetheless more money problems are exactly what I'm looking for.

Kidnap and Ransom insurance.
I will discuss the amount needed and the time frame with my insurance agent.
Although the only case I have heard of is the one in Australia. A little boy was kidnapped and murdered there in the 1960's. After his father's lottery win was publicized.
How soon we forget. I cannot remember that famous flyer's name who's boy was kidnapped here in the U.S. This is not lottery related.
These cases do scream for Anonymity being a choice for a major jackpot winner.
That's required for all those folks who want the world to know that they won. I call it the Kardashian Syndrone. You know the, look at my new shoes, lingerie- the l am a Mother, but who cares, let me show more skin. That crowd definitely needs ransom & kidnap insurance.
"Do you know yourself well enough to handle hundreds of millions of dollars?" Short answer...Yes!
All l need is a chance to prove that l am more than capable of handling not only that, but the stress that comes with it.Within 2 days, it will be like riding a bicycle. I give you my word!
I bought 2 tickets. Da feeeeeeva is alive and well!

Lindbergh?
I am playing mega millions with my mom's boyfriend I bought $9 worth and he bought $15 worth. So we will split the cash three ways one third to Arthur and one third to mom and one third to me. So I think after taxes it should be $50 million here in Oregon that is plenty of money for me since I make about $22 grand a year. I can put money away for a rainy day and try my hand at investing some of it after I get debt free of course.-weshar75
I meam well Weshar75: But make copies of everything.Since Arthur is throwing in an extra $6.00, the last thing you need is a squabble over how much that extra 6 bucks translates into millions taken away from your share of the pie.Being your Mom's BF means nothing , by that l mean that money can change people. Don't get comfortable with the " l know the guy he is the kindest soul you will ever meet." Get it in writing. You never know with humans. Remember history has taught us that Cain killed his brother Abel over jealousy, Judas betrayed the Lord for money. Be extra careful.
Just saying..
Yes, Charles Lindberg. The case made national news in the 1930's.
Good Luck to you, your Mom, and your Mom's friend. Oregon is due for a major jackpot win!
Lindberg was a pretty arrogant and mean person based on accounts I read. He also had numerous illegitimate children in Germany.
Having children in Germany may have been an influence on his view of Nazi Germany.
It does take a different breed to cross the Atlantic in an airplane for the first time. That is no excuse for his personal life but we may be judging him from the Twenty-first Century.
The Great Depression changed the World. We are losing the Americans who survived it.
Oh, l agree that Oregon is due for a major jackpot win Music, this one is already earmarked for CA. Oregon gets the first one AFTER this.
The problem with people who plan to deny they are winners,..denials cause more questions. I would simply say, are you nuts? Would I be wasting my time talking to you if I won a jp??? And if it was broached again I would suggest psychiatric help for their delusions. You need to be firm...not deny and say no, no, no, like a child who broke a vase. Turning the question back onto them is an old negotiation trick.
You could ask, "Would I be wearing these worn out clothes if I was a jackpot winner?" Past winners still drive their beater. As Dave Ramsey would say.
We are getting close time-wise to having a Mega Millions winner.
Hi Music!
I remember staying up late (along with other members on LP) watching it roll pass $400 million and then waiting to hear who won when it reached $656M.
The McDonald's story was crazy and sad.....
Regarding Elicia Battle, I remember that fiasco as well...When she finally confessed that she was lying, she said she did it because she just wanted to win so badly...Elicia also said that she ruined her life.
Because she filed the false police report, a background was done on her and it showed a criminal record that she failed to tell her employer about.
The media said Kentucky has never won a Megamillions jackpot, the whole kit and caboodle that is. We've had many five digit winners, but the sixth number had eluded this state since we joined Mega millions.
Merlande Wilson and Elicia Battle are two more cases of how a lack of a proper education sets a person back for the rest of her life. Do not forget Abraham Lee Shakespeare.
70% of lottery winners lose all of their winnings within seven years.
Each ticket has the same chance of winning the jackpot. Drawn balls are the fairest game in town. The odds are formidable. MM has odds of 1: 302 million.
The more tickets that a region buys, the better chance of a winning ticket is purchased there.
Will all of us be surprised with a rollover tonight? Will there be multiple winning tickets?
I was looking at the history of the jackpot winners this morning and observed that a year ago tonight that Eliberto Cantu of Lubbock, TX won a nice tidy sum of $177 Million. Hmmmmm ??? Anniversary???
I also took a gander further down that list from 2016 and saw that there was a winner in Oct (It Will By Me a Boat Trust) from Rockwall, TX. nice !!!
Since there has yet to be a jackpot winner from Texas in 2018, I am volunteering my services to make it 3 years in a row. After all............ "three's company".
Good luck to us all tonight
You could live like a Prince in Kentucky w/ the 2nd prize.
At this rate I'd take second tier prize anyday.
If there is yet again no Mega Millions winner after tonight's drawing , then the jackpot will roll over to the next drawing on Tuesday night to estimated $612 million
And once again, Good luck to all!!!!!!!!!
And it just jumped to $521 million with cash at $317! Woo Hoo!
Darn Saylorgirl...you beat me to the punch..oh, have an Indiana ticket too!
What will be amount if no ones hit tonight, maybe $729 million
Todd et al will have to update their standing list now for highest lotteries. No rest for the wary.
Chew on this bluedog101. Kentucky was part of those States affected by the Great Tornados back in 1974- every single one of those States, except Kentucky has had a jackpot winner. Those States found the "glass slipper"- perhaps Kentucky's destiny is 2nd place.
**Just saying.
l for one find that hard to believe at times M. The " More tickets that a region buys" mantra. Not when you get winners from States that have less of a population than a crowd at Disneyworld on a good summer's day. I mean, the population of New Hampshire is under 2 Million. As Lord Vader once said " Search your feelings, you know this to be true."
going to be a most curious evening tonight =^)
All l can say is-Wow!
*** Why is it so hard for us to hit any jackpot, yet 71 year old Mick Jagger can find himself dating a 29 year old?
