Updated with store where the winning ticket was sold and updated cash value

By Todd Northrop

A single ticket sold in New Jersey has won the $315.3 million Powerball jackpot in Saturday's drawing, lottery officials announced early Sunday.

New Jersey Lottery Acting Executive Director John M. White announced Sunday afternoon that the winning ticket was sold at Shoprite of Hackensack at 500 South River Street in Hackensack, Bergen County.

"We are thrilled that the winning Powerball jackpot ticket was sold here and I'm happy to congratulate the retailer that sold this winning ticket," said White.

Shoprite of Hackensack will receive a $30,000 bonus check from the New Jersey Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers drawn were 3, 6, 9, 17, and 56, with Powerball number 25. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

According to the New Jersey Lottery, the lump-sum cash payment option before taxes for Wednesday's drawing was $183 million.

"Special congratulations to the winner of this multi-million dollar Powerball jackpot," White continued. "We encourage the winner to sign the back of that winning ticket, make a copy of both sides and put it in a safe place, and contact Lottery Headquarters at 609-599-5875 to arrange to file a claim for this multi-million dollar jackpot prize."

This is the second time in three months New Jersey has a large multi-state lottery jackpot winner. In April, Lottery Post reported that Richard Wahl, a production manager at a northern New Jersey food services facility, claimed a $533 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot. The drawing for that jackpot win was on March 31.

New Jersey, with its voluminous number of lottery players, has had a healthy share of top jackpot winners over the years. Although this $315.3 million lottery win would be considered the largest win in history for most states, New Jersey winners have claimed all or part of seven other multi-state lottery jackpots bigger than this one.

In fact, New Jersey players were the sole winners of three jackpots exceeding Saturday's grand prize total, with the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot claimed in April being the largest sole jackpot win in the state.

Overall, Saturday's $315.3 million prize is the 36th-largest lottery jackpot in United States history. The $183 million cash option would be the 35th-largest lottery lump-sum cash payout in US lottery history.

The holder of Saturday's jackpot-winning ticket has 1 year after the date of the drawing in which to claim the prize, which is subject to federal and state withholding taxes.

In addition to the jackpot winner, 5 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a second-prize win of $1,000,000: 2 from Florida, 1 from Minnesota, 1 from New York, and 1 from Texas.

None of the second-prize winners purchased the Power Play multiplier for an extra $1 per play. If they had, their prize would have been automatically doubled to $2 million.

The Power Play feature is not offered in California, where state law that mandates pari-mutuel payouts that vary from draw-to-draw is not compatible with the fixed-prize nature of Power Play.

49 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 14 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 2 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $36,525 this drawing.

Powerball is offered for sale in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

A $2 ticket gives you a one in 292.2 million chance at winning the jackpot, according to multi-state lottery website USA Mega (www.usamega.com). Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Because there was a jackpot winner, the Powerball jackpot resets to $40 million for the next drawing on Wednesday evening.

Congrats to the winner whoever they might be. Just my observation, the East Coast of the country has been winning these Jackpots a lot lately.

I wonder how many people in that area alone buy tickets..geez

That is exactly what I have been thinking but I didnt want to say it, I would be labeled a whiner or conspiracy theorist lol.

It's always wherever it was just won according to jj.

No Pity!

Tell you what jj, I'll give you a dollar for every NJ PB jackpot winner but you'll have to give me a dollar for every non-NJ winner. Deal?

That would be fate or Karma if our fearless leader Todd Northrop won it. You never know.

I hope that the PB authorities are not planning on increasing the odds even more. We have not been getting billion dollar jackpots liked they planned. So, no need to change.

All the numbers except one, #56, were birthday numbers.

Powerplay doesn't help the Jackpot winner.......only us poor souls lucky enough to get a lower prize.  I always play powerplay just in case I win something.

Does NJ law permit lottery winner to remain anonymous? If not we may hear about litigation.

Ever since Powerball reached $1.5 B on 1/13/16, it has reached $758 M on 4/23/17 and all the other jackpots have been $560 M or lower.
It's almost like they don't want the jackpot to get very big.
After around 20 or so rollovers, like magic there is a jackpot winner.

Maybe they should rename it Smallerball instead of Powerball.

It is strange with this format as to why there isn't more bigger jackpots.

Maybe they should eliminate the first 31 numbers and change the format to pick 5 numbers 32/99 and  pick 1 number 1/28.

I am curious if the powerball winner's ticket was a Quick pick because in the past I have had low numbers with one high number before on my ticket but did not win anything.  It will be insteresting to find out that information when they come forward.-weshar75

No disrespect intended weshar75, but what difference does it truly make, IF the winning ticket was self picked or machine picked? l have heard it said that " Every lottery ticket out there, has the SAME chance as any other." If that be true, why the interest in whether it was this or that? This is a genuine question, l am not looking to get into a debate. All l want is a clear, precise answer. That's all.

"They" have no control over whether someone wins the jackpot. The Powerball people can control the odds, and they did change it a few years ago, but they don't pick a winner behind some magic curtain.

I was looking at historical Powerball jackpots (since Nov. 2015 when the matrix, thus the game, changed) and this jackpot is the median... 50th percentile. Right in the middle. The average is $397 million (a bit higher because of that record $1.5 billion jackpot in January 2016).

destiny2008

Sound like someone cheating.  How could this be (3 times in 3 months).  This game is very rigged.  The odds are so high to win so how could this happen (3 times in 3 months).  I just cant believe it.

Sounds like something like this:

A former lottery worker was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday for rigging the system in several states so he could collect the jackpots.

Eddie Tipton, former security director of the Multistate Lottery Association, received the maximum sentence from an Iowa judge, who mentioned Tipton's "greed" in his sentencing.

"I certainly regret my actions," Tipton told the court. "It's difficult even saying that with all the people that I know behind me that I hurt."

Shoud be investigated.

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork)  There is a buzz at a local grocery store, and why not? It just sold a winning Powerball ticket worth $315 million.

Someone who roamed the aisles at a ShopRite in Hackensack walked out with more than a bag of groceries. He or she is the country's newest multi-millionaire, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported Sunday night.

Obviously, you have forgotten that Hot Lotto and the other games Eddie fixed where RNG draws.

PB is drawn with BALLS, not RNG.

Doesnt matter.  It can still be rigged.  Its all legal gambling.

I've read several times that historically jackpots are won predominantly, not always, on quick picks.  Doesn't matter which I choose; the machine always says Sorry, not a winner!

I agree with you Weshar. I am always interested in that information as well and find it interesting since I pick my own numbers. If you follow number theory, I always am curious how the numbers were picked as well. I really believe self pick winners may be greater in number than computer picks. If everyone thought it was pure luck only, many would  not play.

I have seen new players improve their number picking and become good players in the weekly Maddog and FJA competitions. I guess I believe had work equals success and achievement. How many people say to others about success, that the person was lucky? I believe one makes their own luck.

A little over 12 million PB tickets are usually sold when the jackpot starts at $40 and it's not far fetched to assume there is a larger percentage of self-picks in that group. IMO the real difference between QPs and SPs is it's highly unlikely any terminal will repeat the numbers on your last QP and if I accidentally miss a drawing I will never see some or all of the SP numbers I played for years being drawn.

A 75% sales figure of QPs is largely quoted, but it's probably much higher when total ticket are over 30 million simply because players don't have to fill out a play slip.

Simple probability, if a much larger percentage of QPs than SPs are sold than a much larger percentage of winning tickets will be QPs.

This should not be a surprise to anyone.  Indiana joined Powerball on Oct. 14, 1990, and New Jersey joined Powerball 20 years later on Jan. 31, 2010.

When Indiana joined, there were 12 states in the game.  When New Jersey joined, there were 43 states in the game.

With a head start like that, I'm not sure that Indiana crowing about a few more jackpot wins makes sense.

Facebook,  really.

I guess everyone believes everything they hear on that site.  I haven't been on there in almost 3 yrs and I heard it was worse too.

I guess a lot of people have no life if they're on that site.  The biggest lie I hear is that they keep in touch with certain people like family and some friends.  Well, isn't that what a cell phone is for?
