Sports BettingSports Betting: Four NJ companies roll out sports betting as NFL season kicks offRating:

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — On the day the National Football League season kicked off, four gambling companies either began offering sports betting in New Jersey or announced plans to do it soon.

The Tropicana casino said Thursday that it had reached a deal with William Hill Race & Sports Book to offer sports betting in the near future. No timetable was given for the launch.

Hours later, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement said Caesars casino began online and mobile sports betting, but the casino said later it still has not yet done so, despite getting approval from the state. A launch was expected soon, but its exact time remained uncertain.

The FanDuel sports betting app also went live Thursday, and William Hill's was set to do so Friday. Both of those companies received approval last week to begin so-called "soft play" testing of their online systems, and have been found qualified for unrestricted operation.

William Hill already has affiliations with the Ocean Resort Casino and the Monmouth Park racetrack for in-person sports betting.

FanDuel operates the in-person sports book at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, just outside New York City.

New Jersey gambling outlets took in $40.6 million in sports wagers in July, the first full month it was legal.

The moves leave the newly opened Hard Rock casino as the only one of Atlantic City's nine casinos without an operational or announced sports betting program, although it is believed to be pursuing one.

New Jersey won a U.S. Supreme Court case in May clearing the way for all 50 states to offer sports betting should they so choose.

Companies were particularly anxious to be approved by state regulators and up and running by the start of the NFL season, which is expected to generate the lion's share of legal sports wagers. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles were to face off against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night in the season kickoff. A full slate of games is set for Sunday, and two on Monday night.

I couldn't help but wonder, whether California would travel down that path Music. After glancing at their " shot across the bow" with in Bold letters.." KEEP IN MIND"

    • The California lottery does not sell its games online and does not partner with or endorse any third part businesses that claim to sell or courier California lottery products.
    • Those are hardcore words. Given that they boast about having 23,000 authorized lottery retailers across the State. It * may be hard to see them going this route, but anything is possible.
    • That's just my 3 cents.

noise-gate, Remember that the first and only purpose of our California Lottery is to support education. The sole purpose in other words. This is what the voters want.

Deviation from this will bring lawsuits.

I Agree!...somewhat. it's possible music, that the CA lottery is making such a killing with their present arsenal of games, that the online ones will have to take a number & wait in line. Correct me if l am wrong, but "which" State  lottery commission had a party lately, because of unprecented financial growth,  where some of the adults indulged in ...... behavior.  Something about the Piano bar, where a male shoved his head up a female's shirt? Where was that again, Wisconsin, or was it Wyoming?

          music,

The money bet legally on sports in the USA is mere chump change compared to the amount bet illegally.

This new wave of sports betting will allow a lot of average Jills and Joes to bet, but the illegal betting will still go on.

There was a bookie in Manhattan that had a policy of a 3 bet minimum, straight up bets against the spread. no parlays or gimmicks, 3 bet minimum, at least $50,000 per bet.

One casino I worked in was tight with the San Diego Chargers. Every summer Dan Fouts would come visit a picnic the casino held. One of that casinos regulars also happened to be a very large bookmaker in Southern California.

He used to joke with the bosses that if he could get his picture taken with Dan Fouts he'd own the NFL.

          Green laugh

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

          Lep

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Sorry LP members who do not like my IGT posts, but have stock in Caesars and MGM as well.  MGM owns Borgata Casino & Resort in AC so am tickled about this.  That being said, I will be like music* and never bet on sports, just sticking to MM & PB, L4L and Cashball 225! (IGT provides the software).

A little before my time, but reading Jerry Kramer's book, Instant Reply, I recall a story about Paul Hornung and Alex Karras getting in hot water with the league over gambling. If I recall, they were suspended for some time, don't remember how long.

                My, how things have changed.

I didn't know why the National Football League season begins and gambling is back. Otherwise I'm suspended for the entire football season against the spread because the Cleveland Browns failed to win a single game in the 2017-2018 National Football League Regular Season Game last season Todd!

I believe you mean betting on "NFL games" is back when the season starts because people started betting on the 2018 season when the Superbowl betting lines came out. Last year the Browns went 4 - 12 against their betting line and this year you can get $1000 for $1 betting they will win it all.

There seems to be some confusion here between sports betting and lottery games when in reality, the two things (excuse the pun) are not in the same ball park. Somebody took bets on gladiators fight outcomes, chariot races, Christians vs lions, etc. in Roman times so the only thing new about sports betting in the US is any state can have legal sports betting.

FYI betting off track and on the Internet horse racing was in several states for years so sports books will be an extension of that.

I really doubt the California Lottery or any other state lottery will be running sports books nor will they have their "23,000 lottery retailers" taking bets on football or any other sporting events. Some or all of the AC casinos might sell NJ lottery tickets and maybe they will move their lottery terminals into their sports book, but that is the only connection between the lottery and those casinos.

I need to look up Pete Rose from the Cincinnati Reds, he was never put into the Baseball Hall of Fame due to his shenanigans, whatever they were.

Sort of ironic the rule that threw Pete Rose out of the MLB was made after the Reds won the 1919 World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox team were accused of fixing and intentionally losing games in the 1919 World Series. And even though the eight players were acquitted, in 1921 the new baseball commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned all eight players from playing major league baseball for life.

Pete Rose illegally bet on baseball games while managing the Reds, but there was no evidence he bet against his team or "fixed" games. We'll probably never know all the facts because there was a sort of "plea bargain" between Rose and MLB. Rose was in effect banned from baseball in exchange for MLB not releasing any formal finding with regard to the gambling allegations.

It's still illegal for MLB players, coaches, managers, owners, etc. to bet on baseball whether it's with a legal sports book, a friend, relative, or their local bookie.

I don't think "Charley Hustle" was betting against his own team.

I do find it extremely hypocritical for MLB to keep Rose out of the HOF and ban him from baseball and yet allow casino billboards in the stadiums.
