22nd-largest U.S. jackpot of all time
By Todd Northrop
The multi-state Mega Millions lottery game continued its Autumn climb Tuesday night, and is now at the point where jackpot rolls are sharply increased.
After nobody won Tuesday night's grand prize, the Mega Millions jackpot grew to an estimated $405 million — the 22nd-largest U.S. lottery jackpot of all time, and the biggest since a $543 million Mega Millions jackpot from the July 24 drawing was claimed by a group of 11 California bank workers. (See California office pool claims $543 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, Lottery Post, Aug. 3, 2018.)
The lump-sum cash value rose to a massive $235 million — the 22nd-largest U.S. lottery cash value in history. (The full top-25 list of U.S. lottery jackpots can be found below.)
Friday's Mega Millions jackpot is the accumulation of 20 consecutive drawings without a top prize winner. The current jackpot run-up started on July 27 as a $40 million grand prize — it has been more than two months since Mega Millions has had a jackpot winner.
Lottery players can see an after-tax analysis of the current Mega Millions jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Jackpot Analysis page.
Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs. Occasionally the official jackpot estimate is raised even before the drawing, due to larger-than-expected sales.
Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing was a no-show for second prize winners too — nobody matched 5 numbers without the Mega Ball for a $1,000,000 prize.
However 30 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Of those tickets, 6 were purchased with the Megaplier option, increasing the prize to $30,000, and 6 were sold in California, where the prize is worth $6,611 this drawing.
The Megaplier option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Megaplier is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
The Mega Millions winning numbers for Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, were 2, 22, 29, 31, and 34, with Mega Ball number 1. The Megaplier number was 3.
Following the Tuesday drawing, the Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate was raised $38 million from its previous amount of $367 million. The cash value was raised by $22 million, from its previous amount of $213 million.
The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 302 million. The odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes are 1 in 24.
Mega Millions tickets cost $2 each. For an extra $1 per ticket players can purchase the Megaplier option, which multiplies any non-jackpot won by up to 5 times, depending on the Megaplier number drawn that evening.
The only state that does not offer the Megaplier is California, because state law banning fixed lottery prize amounts is not compatible with the fixed nature of the Megaplier payouts.
Mega Millions features nine different prize levels, ranging from $2 all the way up to the jackpot. Players can win even if they just match one number — the Mega Ball number.
Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time.
The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.
Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time
Friday's Mega Millions jackpot currently stands as the 22nd-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States. That position may rise before the drawing, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

A winning ticket will happen
+$38M is an aggressive increase. I doubt it will reach that level by draw time. We shall see. Best of luck!
"Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing was a no-show for second prize winners too — nobody matched 5 numbers without the Mega Ball for a $1,000,000 prize."
I did take note of this as well as the number of 4+1 winners with only one number that is not a birthday number this re-affirms for the umpteenth time that people play birthday numbers heavily.
The way I did my pyramid I had two number . I had 32 not 31.
Aside from 'feel good stories' these are my favorites the rankings of lottery jackpots.
Just back from Canada and this time played Lotto Max-$60 CD for five weeks.
Yes, it is time to ascend the ladder of increasing jackpots. Where will it stop nobody knows.
22nd highest all time, eh. People won't get excited till it hits at least the top 10. 405 Million just ain't enough any more.

I am very excited over it, I will take it, not a problem!!!
Me too! Let's split it.
I know it sits in 22nd place on the jackpot scale, but l would like to put an end to it’s swelling, and take it home this Friday. I want to visit The Seychelles, but avoid the Ganges at all costs.
Speaking of foreign lands. Would you help the tsunami victims in Indonesia? Possibly through the Red Cross?
It is extremely difficult for some communities to prepare for natural disasters.
America's reputation as a generous nation is warranted and well deserved. As the leader of free nations, we set a very good example in helping others both here and abroad.
As an author penned, "No man is an island". "For whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee".
As a nation of immigrants, we remember our homelands.
.
From where I sit, the drawing is just under 2 hours away.
I just want to win 1 million, but If something should happen, and I win a heck of a lot more,
I'm going to fix certain problems in my life, and then proceed to do the revocable trust thing,
thanks to member "Music*'s" suggestion, a while back.
Mr. Groppo
Groppo, It is the Living Revocable Trust. Please remember us here at Lottery Post and fill us in on things like the cost and time involved with creating it. Do remember to fund it. Your Trust and Estate Attorney can explain what, "funding it" means.
Thank You for mentioning my LP name.
With a little under 25 million tickets sold there was less than a 10% chance of somebody winning the jackpot and the expectations of only one 5 + 0 winner. Anybody know the California 5 + 0 is?
There were no 5 + 0 winners in CA.
I found this info. at USAMEGA under Previous Results, Mega Millions. Then click on the first line dated Oct. 2, 2018. Then scroll down to California 5 + 0 winners.
I looked for this info. and finally found it.
Music- l * think Stack is referring to the 5+0 California winner from Friday 28th drawing. The winner from Southern Cal pulled in $2.5 mil, before taxes.
Thank You noise-gate.
I noticed that Todd now uses the 24% figure on USAMEGA to calculate the first tax deduction. The automatic one for all States. That leaves 13% to still be paid by April 17, 2019, CA does not tax lottery winnings.
Both PB and MM are at decent prize levels. We are blessed with good fortune! LOL
Good Luck to all of us here at Lottery Post. This weekend could be interesting.
All l know music, is that no amount of contributions is going to clean up the Ganges river. It’s one big floating sewer, but yes, l will help victims out wherever l can, but for heavens sake, stay away from that river.
* Just saw a trailer for “ Vice” starring Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, now that’s one dedicated actor to his craft. What l wanna know is, how Bale intends to get his washboard abs back. That’s some belly his carrying for that role there.
$400 Million and the thread is only two pages long. Jackpot fatigue has finally hit the addicts.
Fatigue ?? Neeehhhh, besides, it's not really $400 Million. Cash value is at $235 Million(which almost everyone would take), which leaves you with $148M after F taxes.. Nice tidy some though
I hope that an LP Member, Todd or Staff wins it.
Reality will hit me, "More Money, More Problems" as a Rapper once said.
As Mike Pace, the former Power Ball announcer said, "This will revolutionize someone's life".
Be cognizant of the JERKS, Jealous, Envious, Resentful, Killjoys. There is an entitlement way of thinking in our Country. You did not work for it so what is yours is mine.
I will now step down from my soapbox. Or preaching one.
The estimate has been raised to $420 million but the cash value of $237.1 million has a very different ratio than the previous estimate.
When the cash value gets to $600 million, the game could be worth playing (1 in 300 million chance of winning $600 million is worth $2, equal to the price of a ticket). However, when the cash value gets that big, it means the fake jackpot is $1 billion. That sends hordes of people running to the convenience store to drop all the money they've got on lottery tickets. The result is multiple winners, and suddenly your $600 million is only $200 million.
MM (and PB) is an awful game that no one should play.
Do you ever venture up to S. Lake Tahoe to play those 'awful' lottery games there? (I do when I visit).
Anyway it's a shame that your state Constitution forbids any kind of lottery. Casinos have a stronghold there. I will say so glad their Lobbyists were able to persuade the IRS to not lower the taxable amount from $1199 down to $600. So for that I am grateful to your casino interests out there.
music*, love your JERKS acronym. It is so unfortunately true. Hands are out all over the place. Me personally been doing something for fifty years, so retired once I hit 62, enough was enough.
Bleudog101, I was inspired to create that acronym by Mark Gardiner. He won in Hastings, England. He told about the Green-eyed Monster Jealousy, Envy, and Resentment. How the people around him changed.
Money does change people that are around you. Mark made the mistake of buying a few friends their own homes. They turned around and sold them for the cash. Mark was quite upset about that.
Mark is on YouTube and Insight. Insight.com originates from Australia. There is one program titled "Windfall". Which is lottery related.
I have forgotten the name of the lottery game in England. I will google it.
I am sure there is some history here on LP about Mark Gardiner.
I typed in the search box, Mark Gardiner. I found a lot there.
Very interesting stories and replies. Will help me after I win.
Bleudog101,
When one employee asked a shift boss how come Nevada doesn't have a lottery the shift boss' answer was very simple: "The joints want it all."
The Nevada 'answer' to a lottery was the progressive jackpot MegaMillions machines. When they first put them in it was kind of spooky watching the jackpot meter advance with nobody playing that particular machine, but they were set up so if anyone anywhere in the state played one ( I think at the time it took five quarters to increase the jackpot 1 cent) the jackpot increased.
Last time I played Megabucks slot machine (not Megamillions) it was $3/pull. You are correct, the jackpots all read the same in Laughlin, Las Vegas, Reno and of course Lake Tahoe NV. Last time I was in McCarran couldn't find one, maybe in the smoking section which I won't frequent.
Yeah, that's right MegaBucks.it's been awhile.
That was really weird to see the jackpot advancing woth no one playing.....one of our Asian dealers thought a ghost was playing the machine!
(There was actually an incident in Vegas where a woman was scattering a 'powdered substance' around some slot machines.when security asked her what she was doing she said her aunt had been cremated and asked that her ashes be scattered in the slot section of a certain casino).
Don't blame you for not going to the smoking section.
And I was wondering how many drawings it takes to get the 5 + 0 prize over $1 million.
Often wonder myself how long it takes with the CA pari-muteul payouts they have for secondary prizes. This time it was just $638,237. A couple of weeks ago it paid over $2 million and the big jackpots weren't as high. Don't remember if it was PB or MM. No rhyme or reason to me, something their statisticians figure out??
Time for Todd et al to upgrade the MM hall of fame as I call it to reflect the new jackpot.
Won $20 last night. Woo hoo is what the machine said.
Did you win it in Iowa? I know that their machine says, Woo Hoo You are the winner".
Be patient with Todd. We do not know his entire workload.
It should depend on how many winners there are for each prize category. Most lotteries in Europe pays out in this way.
No, music*; Kentucky. It just says woo hoo. Oh I get your joke now...and 6 NOV 18 just around the corner!
Remember the 5 + 0 tier is in itself it's own jackpot. If no one wins at the 5 + 0 level the pari mutual amount growns to a million and beyond. Even if the jackpot is at $40M.
I read about David Lee Edwards using the Search box. What I take away from all that is I will definitely talk with a Certified Financial Planner. I will get help making the choice of Annuity or Cash.
I will start with www.financialengines.com Those CFPs are fiduciaries as well.
I am planning on living on the earnings that my prize will get.
I am thinking that when I win on Tuesday I will wait until the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to claim. My story will be buried with Holiday news. Christmas music begins then too. LOL
$167,000,000.00 Cash brings a lot of responsibility with it.
I will need different types of Insurance. Especially Umbrella coverage or also known as Excess Liability Insurance.
The winner will become an Ultra High Net Worth UHNW winner. Security will be needed.
Woo-hoo congrats! 2 + 1 or 3 +0 tier is tough to get alone. You turned $3 to $20.
Does anyone know what state holds the most Mega millions Jackpot wins over all the rest?
In a bit we're going to the winningest Powerball jackpot state of Indiana; have some old tickets to check there.
The California 5 + 0 prize was $1,276,474 last night but was split by two players. The California players playing for the second prize should only play when the jackpot is small. I know, I know that's opposite what lots of players do, but when more people play, it's more likely to have multiple second prize winners.
Bleudog101, I looked at the MM Annuity and Cash rankings. These new amounts will make the rankings for the Annuity $470 million #13 and the Cash Lump Sum $265 million # 17.
I used the chart that is at the top of this Post. When Todd creates the new MM hall of fame we will see if I am correct.
What are your plans for the Cash Lump Sum after all taxes are paid = $167,000,000.00
I hereby dub the The Player Who Cried Jackpot.
You seem to be in a sphere somewhere between "You bet your mind and you lose your mind" and honest to goodness delusional.
Challenge;
Call as many financial planning people as you like, tell them of the things you post here. When they ask when you can come in to see them and set things up, "Well after I win a jackpot."
Let us know what they tell you.
PS,
Every time you do this you reinforce the jinx theory.
Viel gluick, du vonnen auf der cuckoo haus.
"dub thee" I will tell you, "After I win a jackpot". Your theory is still a theory and not fact.
Being here on Lottery Post has taught me a lot. Like recognizing that each person has their own opinion. Their own point of view.
I can use the Search box and go back years.
"Jackpot"!!!
Why would I drive out of my way to play a terrible game?
If I want to win a large amount of money, I play live keno. A top prize of $100,000 that is easier to win is a much better deal. Even if I don't win, I accumulate points very quickly which can be used for free play or food. A convenience store never gives you that even if you throw away $1,000 on lottery tickets.
I'm glad the NV Constitution forbids a state lottery. The state should not be in the business of gambling. The state should just stick to public schools, police, roads, etc.
I am also glad that the taxable threshold was not reduced from $1,200. In my opinion, no gambling winnings should be taxable. But I don't write the law, so I usually stick to games with a top prize of less than $1,200.
Hang in there, music - keep that positive attitude.
music,
Everybody here can use the Search box and go back years.
What I take away from all that is I will definitely talk with a Certified Financial Planner.
I'm pretty sure that Edwards got plenty of good, and competent, advice.
"I am planning on living on the earnings that my prize will get."
I'm not sure if Edwards ever planned on doing that, but if he actually did it he didn't do it for very long.
"The state should not be in the business of gambling."
There's not a single state in the country that's in the gambling business, but all 50 of them are in the business of collecting money from people in order to pay for stuff. Things like public schools, police, roads, etc.
I'm with you Music. Dont give up on your dreams and a lot of us dream right along with you.
Thank You mikeintexas and lejardin! Moral support is always welcome.
The problem with dreaming is that at the time you win you could feel like your dreaming the dream of a lifetime. Pinch yourself and ask, "Am I awake?". Then shed a few tears of thanksgiving.
