SC Lottery pays out more than $3.4 million

We now know that a lot of people in South Carolina have the same strategy for the Pick 4 lottery game — and it just won them a lot of money.

Nearly 1,400 people won the South Carolina Education Lottery's Pick 4 midday drawing Saturday with the same set of numbers: 2-2-2-2. It was a record number of winners for the Pick 4 and a record payout, the Lottery announced in a statement.

Lottery spokeswoman Holli Armstrong said that people started lining up to claim their prizes around 7:30 a.m. Monday, about an hour before the payout office in Columbia opened.

The Lottery handed out fans and water as the winners waited in the Southern heat. Depending on how much players spent on the tickets, and how many they purchased, payouts were anywhere between $2,000 and $5,000.

One winner cashed out with $80,000 after buying 16 tickets with the lucky two's combo.

The drawing cost the Lottery more than $3.4 million, officials said.

Armstrong said the lines got busier around lunchtime as people started arriving from across the state. The office paid out more than $1 million by the end of the day.

She said there was also a line Tuesday but it was a lot smaller in comparison.

The new number crushes the 652 wins the last time quadruple 2s were drawn, on July 8, 2012.

Very nice to see alot of winners. Same thing happened june 4 2019 eve draw in Texas when 4444 hit . the Texas lottery websight said there were over a 2000 winners so please be patent because of the very long lines.

South Carolina has had 11,171 drawings in it's Pick 4 history. This was the eighth quad ever.

That's one every 1,396 drawings.

noise-gate

Since we " Know" that State lotteries hate paying out, SC officials are probably muttering under their breath " darn, how did this happen?" To them, money should only be flowing in one direction- theirs.

Imo the only time the lottery is glad to see a winner, is after the State coffers are overflowing, and the " we fleeced them enough in this round " statement follows.

Here's something interesting about the SC Pick 4.

Based on the Lottery Post's Search Results, you're more likely to hit a Quad in the Midday drawing than the Evening drawing.

Since the start of the Midday Pick 4 on 2003-07-01, as of 2019-10-03, there have been 5078 drawings (Mon-Sat) with 7 Quads.

Story of my life.   Phone call comes in early yesterday stating play 444 that it will come in.   Didn't play it.   Came in last night in Kentucky for the tune of over $1.1 million!

While quads might average once in every 1396 drawings, a quad was drawn in S.C. four times in the last three years. The only thing unique about this drawing was the payoff amount.

Did you get a call to play 8888 in KY today?

Nearly 1,400 people won the South Carolina Education Lottery's Pick 4 midday drawing Saturday and SC Lottery pays out more than $3.4 million

When I read that KY sold 652 winning tickets and paid out $1,533,652 (including "1-Off" tickets), it occurred to me that if S.C. sold 1400 tickets, each ticket had to be worth $2500 selling zero $1 straight tickets. Apparently someone is exaggerating how many winning tickets there actually were sold.

There were exactly 1,393 winners for the 2222 according to the S.C. lottery website.

For the 13 Pick 4 drawings from 10/1 thru 10/7, only 3 drawings had more then 10 straight winners. 20-16-12. No other drawing had more then 9 straight winners. Five of the drawings had 5 winners or less.

Makes 1,393 even more incredible. Thud

And 1393 times $2500 equals $3,482,500. What makes that figure incredible is the fact if it's true, there were no $1 tickets sold.  Lots of people play only triples and quads so there probably are more 50 cent straights sold because players buy all the trips and quads for $5. Bet someone in S.C. simply divided the total payout by $2500.

On 9/28 the midday KY Lottery drawing had 23 pick-4 "winners" collecting $4072 and obviously no $1 straight bets and probably no 50 cent straight bets either. The difference with trips and quads, there are no other types of "winners" unless there is an added bet option.

80,000/16=5K

16 Tickets were sold at $5000.00  totaling $80,000.  16x5,000

16 Tickets if sold at $2500.00  @0.50 bet would be 16x2500= $40,000

16  $1.00 tickets were sold to ONE winner winning whatever the lucky two's combo is

They paid out "over $3.4 million" and that divided by the number of winners (1393) equals less than $2500 per ticket. That actual payout was probably $3,482,500 and somebody at the lottery simply divided that by $2500.

The drawing cost the Lottery more than $3.4 million, officials said.

Like you said, at least one player bought 16 $1 tickets and probably many more $1 tickets were sold. The total payout is obviously under $3.5 million because if it was over that they would have reported that number instead of the "more than $3.4 million".

One thing we do know for sure, there were no box payouts. LOL

On average, a Quad should be drawn once every 1000 draws.

As of 2019-10-07, the Midday drawing is averaging about 725.9 draws & the Evening is averaging 6099 draws.

If the Evening doesn't hit a Quad tonight, that's a average of 6100 draws.

The half life of a Quad hit is 693.1 draws, meaning 50% of all Quads on average should hit before 693.1 draws and 50% of all Quads should hit after 693.1 draws.

Provided, this is a truly random selection, of course.

Tonight's Pick 4 Evening drawing, 2019-10-08, is the 2648th draw since the last Quad was selected back on 2012-07-08.

There's a 92.92% probability a Quad will hit tonight based on the Potential Probability of Occureence.

I think the problem here is most folks get caught up in the math probabilities and do not realize random could care less one way or another on what our math dictates. You can recite any or all the exotic math formulas until blue in the face and yes sir, numbers don't lie.

Hence like you said, there's a 0.1% chance of a quad being drawn. That is fact, by the 9990 other combinations to only, 10 quads ratio.. This will not stop anyone from plucking down their cash on a Potential Probability of, "THIS TIME I WILL win Chance"..

But, but lots of people here believe those numbered ping pong are programmed to remember which of them and in whatever combination with the others were drawn in the past.

Please don't disillusion their beliefs with "actual probabilities.

Does It Ring True?

In all of us, we have this evolved sense of what’s random and what’s not.

Take the simple act of flipping a coin.

Now, we’re not going to get in to the probability mathematical mumbo-jumbo or split hairs on the one sided weightiness of a coin.

Let’s just focus on the simple, is it Heads or is it Tails and you’ll see if this rings true.

Flip of a coin and we get a Tails.

Hmm, nothing too complicated, we got an outcome.

We’ll keep track of our outcomes with an H for Heads and a T for Tails.

In the first flip, T.

Again, flip and we get Tails.

Hmm-hmm, T & T, TT.

Ok, flip again, TTT… alright, interesting.

Let’s go on, TTTT… and a pattern forms.

Fifth flip, TTTTT… wha’?

We can see by this flip, something is flipping out, but it’s not impossible.

Impossible, meaning can never happen; unlike Improbable, meaning can happen, but is very rare.

Let’s carry this out to 16 flips and we get: TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

Again, this is not impossible, however, it is improbable.

But, let’s move even flipping further and we get TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

Once again, it’s not impossible, but very improbable.

At this point, your built-in sense of randomness kicks-in; you know what rings true.

Somewhere in this, we may have asked ourselves, “When is a Heads going to Hit?”

Well, that’s a good question.

How many Tails have to happen before we see a Heads?

This is really the essence of our built-in sense of randomness.

If the flips continued well beyond 32 flips and we are getting nothing but TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT…, our confidence this is not random would be pretty high.

Again, this is not Impossible, but is Extremely Improbable.

Here’s an example of a random flip that continues beyond 10 flips.

We can plot the Head and Tails and see how this looks as a graph.

Or better yet, let’s call Heads a Hit and Tails a Miss.

Then it would look like this:

We can see it’s a Hit some flips and some flips it’s a Miss.

However, there may be flips when the Miss continues for a few flips; like at flip 38 to 43.

But, it does eventually Hit and within a reasonable sense of randomness; the randomness Rings True.

Now, now let’s carry this in to the current topic of Quads as a Hit & Miss.

We can plot the Midday Quad Hit & Miss and see if the randomness Rings True.

Hmm, seems reasonable since on average a Quad should Hit once every 1000 draws.

What is happening in the evening?

Hmm, hmm, hm… what’s going on?

The Midday has had fewer draws than the Evening, but more Quad Hits.

The Evening has had more draws, but way less Quad Hits than the Midday.

In Our Opinion, something doesn’t seem to ring true.

So, would it take more than 1000 draws for a quad to fall or less than 1000 draws with pre and post being taken into consideration or can you just ignore that because all drawings are what we believe to be random

KY Floyd's avatarKY Floyd

It's impossible to know how many drawings it will take. All we know for certain is that there are 1000 possible outcomes, and all of them are (essentially) equally likely.

The "equally likely" part is one of the key points of random probability, but all that means is that no particular outcome is more or less likely than any other. IOW, we can never expect any particular result. All we can expect is that as a long term average things with a 1 in 1000 chance of happening will happen about once in every 1000 times. Because it's a long term average it very definitely doesn't mean that we should expect it to happen once in any particular thousand times, but we can expect about 5 in 5 thousand  times or about 10 in 10 thousand times. The other key point of random probability is that particular events are just probable (or improbable), with none of the possible events being either certain or impossible. That means that about 5 times in 5,000 or about 10 times in 10,000 is reasonably likely, but 0 or 1000 times is also possible.

Looking at the mid-day quads there are 6 occurrences in the first 5000 times, which is fairly close to the 1 in 1000 times average that we can expect as a probable result. Overall, the chance of having 6 occurrences is "only" 14.5%, but the average 5 in 5000 occurrences is only slightly more likely, at 17.5%. It's also worth noting that the distribution of the 6 occurrences is obviously not regular. In fact, it's what might be characterized as random. Imagine that. The chance of going 3450 evening drawings and having just a single quads is significantly lower, at about 3.2%, but not what anyone who plays the lottery should consider highly unlikely. A 3.2% chance is the same as 1 in 31.25, which is slightly more likely than the 1 in 32 chance of flipping a coin and getting 5 heads (or 5 tails) in a row. You can flip 32 virtual coins very easily here: 32 flips of a penny to see how many tries it takes to actually get  run of  5 in a row.

Even if we look at the total of 6100 drawings with just 1 quad we're still not seeing a result that's wildly unlikely. There's only a 0.22% chance of that happening, but that's (exactly) 22 times as likely as the 1 in 10,000 chance of picking the correct pick 4 result. Why somebody posting on a lottery forum thread about a pick 4 result would think that means "something doesn’t seem to ring true"  is beyond me.

The only relevance of the tests is that the actual results of the evening drawing may not really be 1 quad in 6100 drawings. I don't know (and don't care) if SC does any pre-draw testing, but if they do the 6100 official drawings may  mean there have actually been 30,500 or 61,000 drawings with somewhere between 1 and 100 or more quads having been drawn. The random distribution of the quads in the official mid-day drawings makes it clear that we'd only expect the distribution of quads between test drawings and official drawings to be uniform if we don't understand how probability actually works.

I'll also note that the "Evening Quad Potential" we keep hearing about is based on the long-term theoretical results predicted by probability. There have been about 2650 (official) evening drawings since the last quad, and after 2650  1 in 1000 chances (with minor rounding) there's a 93%  probability of getting at least 1 quad.  Of course each drawing is a completely independent event that's not influenced by previous drawings and that doesn't have any influence on future drawings. The actual chances of getting a quad in any particular drawing is, and always will be, 1 in 1000 because there are 10 outcomes out of the 10,000 equally likely possible outcomes that are quads. Which specific drawing, and whether it will be an official drawing or a test drawing is something we can't know until it happens.

JADELottery's avatarJADELottery

No, Quad tonight.

Monday's Evening Potential is now at 93.06%.

Provided it's truly random, of course.

Good Luck.

For a truly random selection, it's still an average of 1000 draws, with or without, pre-draws and post-draws.

This Evening Quad Potential, 93.23%.

Where have they been going???

Hmm, maybe Last Triple.

Looks like First & Middle Double is seeing more action, too.

Good Luck

Hmm, Middle Double for Midday Today, 1422 → 1224 → 0112 → ABBC.

Hey! It's been running above the Theoretical Average, too.

Good Luck.

JADELottery's avatarJADELottery

Huh, First Double for last night: 2326 → 2236 → 0012 → AABC.

Tonight's Quad Potential is 93.24%.

Good Luck.

JADELottery's avatarJADELottery

oo, Last Double, Last Night, 7743 → 3477 → 0122 → ABCC.

Tonight's Evening Quad Potential is 93.25%.

Yep, about 93% of all Quads would have reoccurred from the last quad draw by now.

Since draw inception, about 6 Quads on average should have been drawn.

Since last quad draw, about 3 Quads on average should have reoccurred.

Good Luck.

JADELottery's avatarJADELottery

Tonight's Quad Potential still 93.25%

But, if you need an alternate, try these near quads.

They seem to be a go to choice.
