Powerball ticket-buying frenzy this week
By Todd Northrop
This week lottery players across the United States will be pulling out all the stops to try and win Powerball, featuring one of the largest lottery jackpots in history, worth an estimated $1.725 billion.
The Powerball jackpot has been building for 35 consecutive drawings since the last winner on July 22. All those drawings have accumulated a massive pile of cash, ready to provide multi-generational wealth to the lucky lottery player who wins it all.
Monday night when there were no Powerball jackpot winners, the new jackpot for Wednesday's drawing was estimated at $1.725 billion, with a lump-sum cash option of $756.6 million. Three-quarters of a billion dollars in cash!
It is the 2nd-largest lottery jackpot in US history, and the 7th-largest cash option ever offered. (See complete top-25 jackpot rankings for annuity and cash values below.)
Of course, any big winner (or winners) of Wednesday's Powerball jackpot will have to pay taxes on their prize, so the website USA Mega has a handy Powerball Jackpot Analysis page available to calculate the federal and state taxes that would be withheld upon payout. The feature calculates both the initial withholdings and the final tax burden due at the end of the year, and even can show taxes calculated for different IRS filing statuses.
Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, the only app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean.
Some states offer direct online sales, allowing players to bypass the store and purchase tickets from home. Players can see if they can play Powerball online by tapping the link. Depending on the physical location of the person, the link will either provide access via a licensed butler service or the official state lottery itself.
Butler services provide scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, such lottery ticket services were used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.
The winning numbers for Monday, October 9, 2023 were 16, 34, 46, 55, and 67, with Powerball number 14. The Power Play number was 3.
The Monday Double Play drawing results were 1, 20, 33, 49, and 59, with Powerball number 10. Double Play is a game option currently available in 18 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.
Even though nobody won the jackpot Monday, 5 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from California, 1 from Florida, 1 from Indiana, 1 from Oregon, and 1 from Virginia. (The California winner will claim a prize of $1,064,543, due to the state's pari-mutuel payout formula.)
Only the one second-prize ticket sold in Florida was purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their prize to $2 million.
When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.
The official drawing videos can also be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega.
Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
Also in the Monday drawing, 118 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 17 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 22 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $12,387 this drawing.
Following the Monday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $159.8 million from its previous amount of $1.5652 billion and the cash value was raised by $70.1 million from its previous amount of $686.5 million.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.
Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

Really surprised it was not hit thinking those #'s sounded good. Was wrong obviously.
May have to charge up my KLC account and play on-line and will of course look for rescue tickets.
Good luck everyone!!
Yea thinking online but not sure of Jackpocket, jackpot, etc. don't want to go pickup my ticket and they can't print itp
I'm still thinking sat.
I use Jackpocket to purchase my tickets.
I buy from the convenience of my own home. No line. No wait.
Good luck all!
Please GOD, let me win the lottery! Amen
LOL never had to wait in line once in all the years I've been playing
Same hear HT. It also gives me the option of going to different places that could benefit from selling a jackpot winning ticket (especially the mom-n-pop stores).
Only 1 number again . Maybe more numbers next draw.
keep the faith and do what you can to avoid the dreaded lottery hangover
Here in philly, there are many places to get the tickets. The pharmacy near where I work at as well has those automated machines with every game. so I play it then purchase. Most people go to wawa machine, sometimes its down. oh well their loss.
Lol
Exactly
Will the PB Jackpot cross the $2.04 Billion mark and be the top lottery prize, if it is rolled over.
Will it happen ?
<snip> who the lucky winner be !!
Yes, and the guy that won the 2 billion lottery in Cali will win another 2 billion again
Only 1 number on 3 lines. Hope for better next time.
I have always wondered if previous lottery winners do go in full swing when the jackpots are this high to try and hit it again.
I mean they can afford to play even 10K for every drawing when the jackpot is above say 500M.
I hit only one number too

Goodbye 1995 Honda Accord. Hello Porsche 911 GT3
I am feeling good about this Jackpot, Good luck to all.
I'm buying 4 lines this time. Maybe that will help.
Hopefully an LP member.
Gotta correct something:
7. Powerball: $756.6 million cash, Oct. 11, 2023 ($1.725 billion annuity) - Preliminary estimate, not won yet Tennessee
There....All fixed
Lol
Todd?... You posted $1.725 Billion... LOz on the "Results" pg. posted $1.73 Billion... Why the difference?.. Just curious...
Ya wouldn't be gitin a cut of dat JaCkPoT naah wouldja?
thanks 4 jinxing your self
I'd whoop his rear if I see him in line, or any other billionaire lol
ooopsy, you spell Michigan like this, Michigan. Good luck
I looked into this number combination once. Approximately 10k people play these numbers for every draw. It would actually be hilarious to see the jackpot split that many ways with each winner only receiving $70k or so before taxes.
It has this rhythm that the powerball theme does at least $20 million when the draw isn't won. So that is why I see it as not going to where it should be. I still think Sat a winning ticket then back to the $20 million or is it $40 million.
and thanks 4 jinxing yourself
No, I had anti jinxing man....see
Got 2 picked lines and 3 lines of QPs for Wednesday good luck to all
Crazy 12 one million dollar winners on Saturday but only 5 last night. Let's go again for Wednesday!
* My Palantir may not be right, but it's never wrong. Another billionaire will be made in CA, it's heartbreaking to millions but it is what it is, as the saying goes.
it's called rounding. 1.725 is more accurate; hence that is what is in the news story.
Exactly, in my area we have so many places that participate in the lottery there is never a line no matter how big the jackpot is. It seems like the lines are in those border states where one state does not participate in the Powerball and Mega Millions and the border state does
Exactly, most of us would not touch the number 1-2-3-4-5-6 with a 10 foot pole. 10 thousand people play this number daily. I often wonder how many people are still playing Hurley's lottery number from the TV show LOST. Hurley's number was 4-8-15-16-23-42, four of the six numbers came out in the Mega Millions drawing of $355M. The numbers were: 4-8-15-25-42-47 in 2011.
41,763 people played that number and won $150 each
Proving no jack pot is so large that it can't become larger $$$$$$$
ChatGPT says you'd have a chance! indeed! yes, one in 295 millions!
almost hit the jackpot, about 200 million numbers. .:)
$5,518,045 after taxes for the MM.
Mmh, I wil take it, so getting a ticket for today's draw 😁
naturally, Draw Sales are getting higher and higher.
I betcha my last weeks olive loaf on pumpernickel sandwich that the pb 'pot will be $1,726,000,000 or higher.
PU! Who brought the beans and frankfurter casserole over to the house for the potluck supper tonite?
Couldn't someone have thought to make Lobster Mac & Cheese?
And another thing, if you bring beans and hot dogs ..... you should also bring brown bread and maybe codcakes. Just saying.
Todd,
As soon as it was determined that no one had won the jackpot, the Illinois lottery said $1,725,000 on it's 800 mumber.
Now I'm wondering what their source is.
I usually check the PB website, but keep in mind at this point they are all estimates.
The Texas lottery website showed that it would be 1.72 yesterday morning. Sometimes it shows what it will roll to the day before the drawing if it isn't won. I don't think there's a ouija board involved but you never know with Texas.
At this point, does it matter if it's $1.725 or 1.730?
Saying its 1.7 anything billion is a mean joke. If it were serious it would say 476 million because thats the most anyone is gonna get.
Saturdays sales were $230,840,180 and last nights sales were $186,354,714. Thats over 22 million tickets difference. Considering its over a billion jackpot it should be going up, not down, even for a Monday.
Last night when I bought my ticket the manager said only 5 or so people had bought powerball tickets all day and its on the border. People just aren't buying the hype anymore.
12.5 M now...
You're right, just less than 1/3 of the advertised Jack pot.
If you want 1b,the Jack pot must be 4b and that won't happen...
A Rollover, huh, because the RigCheaters plan of where the Jackpot winning numbers (the state & lottery terminal were to be) fell out of sync.
So, $230m in sales.. @ $2 per line, that is just 115 million lines.. There are 292.2 possible combinations...
even if every line was unique, that is less than 40% of possible combinations covered .. In reality, even lower number of unique combinations covred..
I will continue to play each game with my 5 plays plus powerplay. I think that I will get one additional 5 plays plus powerplay in quick picks with my usual favorite numbers played. Best of luck to all that play on tonight's drawing!
The $1.725 billion number is the correct, accurate number. Most in the press — including the official Powerball website and (as it was pointed out) the Lottery Post results pages — have rounded that number off to $1.73 billion. USA Mega, however, always shows the full, accurate amount. And I decided to use the accurate amount in the news story here.
Is that a complete accounting of the jackpot number?
Hopefully the jackpot rolls so more of these ninnies come out of the woodwork and nitpick that you're not showing the jackpot down to the absolute cent.
Ehhh....$1.72B or $1.725B or even $1.73B...Good enough for government work.
Besides.....Whats a few Million between friends........
Ooh yes, the annuity moved from 20M to 48M, wow that's awesome.
I will get my ticket with multiplier incase I land a second tier prize 😁
I'm in that one too.
after reviewing your post history, my advice for you is to avoid church potlucks and crowded elevators for the next 11 years. perhaps try a leafy green salad, one that is not suspended in gelatin.
It's called billion dollar jackpot fatique.... G5
New jackpot is 1.748 for tonight, still showing same amount for cash tho.
If it rolls it will be 1.92
I hear you DDB.....The one thing I thought that was noteworthy:
https://www.texaslottery.com/export/sites/lottery/index.html
Clearly states 1.72 Billion..plain as day,no questions asked....Cool
Then you go further and open up their PB jackpot calculations page:
https://www.texaslottery.com/export/sites/lottery/Documents/jackpotestimates/pb20231009.pdf
$1.725 Billion(in the far right hand column...Okay so it's off 5 million.. No big deal
Then you go to the Powerball homepage:
https://www.powerball.com/
$1.73 Billion..plain as day, no questions asked
https://tnlottery.com/
TN site says $1.72 Billion
https://www.delottery.com/
DE says $1.73 Billion.
I haven't seen a $5 - 10 million dollar variance in the jackpot prize before, on this many sites
Again, these are projections and subject to change. I just haven't seen this variance on the TX lottery website before nor do I recall seeing this kind of difference between the PB site & Tx lottery site either. ... No big deal, just an observation not seen from past experiences.
Which means on Saturday it will be #1
it shld surpass the last one
best of luck to us all
and may one of us enjoy the company of lady fortune this evening
Saturday jackpot will be $1.92 billion if it rolls.
AMEN, HT...amen
About correct unless they pull a fast one.
The one castro won last year was 1.976 with cash of 929M
If it goes til Saturday it will be about 1.922 with cash of 874M. Saturdays projected sales are 323M. When castro won it the sales were 550M
It would have to roll til Monday to maybe beat last years.
The sales numbers aren't even close tho.
How do we know you almost hit the jackpot? You have the number you played whited out except the 55
Very interesting article about Powerball on cnn website today. Forgot all about Lotto America's rules, the interesting part was capped off @ $80 million. Ticket was $1 and no Powerball to deal with and much, much better odds. Thinking about the cap off, if nobody won then it stayed the same????
After being stationed @ Walter Reed in DC and stationed up the road @ Ft. Meade, MD, my old civilian supervisor would mail me Lotto America tickets and one time just before leaving for Germany won $140 or so...most I've ever won, sadly, on any of the big guys. I'd mail her MD tickets BTW.
Just my two cents worth for what that is worth and of course L.A. was only played in a handful of states plus DC. Now if Puerto Rico would just get Mega Millions!
Just checked Powerball website and didn't say that...but I will check California's to see what they say!
I found it on the Texas calculation documents.
Very much so, thanks Todd.
Can I please volunteer myself to win this evening?
I mean, I did not pray, but at least I got some tickets.
I should win and then prove to all that it's not rigged or will they say I won by fluke 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Here's to a great night tonite ... at the tracks for the Kerwin brothers Sherman and Sherwin.
And I hope Jimmie j and Johnny joe the Jones brothers don't eat too much at the buffet in the casino .
Oh yeah, least I forget Esther and Ethel the Evans sisters . .. I hope they kill it at bingo.
As for this board?
Good luck everyone!
PU!
Caviar on Sara Lee pound cake? A little tacky are we not?
This is (usually) because of fluctuations in the interest rates etc when they calculate the annuity payout.
For example, The current cash ratio is ~40% of jackpot. Back in the COVID period (2021-22) it hit 83%.. because interest rates were at an all-time low, so the annuity wasn't worth as much...
You should read the euro millions jackpot cap.
Once the jackpot hits £240M cap, it rolls over five times but every excess money goes to the lower tier prize.
After five roll overs at £240M. The jackpot must be won.
They do a Must Be Won Draw. During the draw if no one matches all the number (Match 5 plus 2 stars), they move to the second tier (Match 5 plus 1), if no one matches the numbers in the second tier they move to the next (Match 5)
By that point there will be a winner(s).
Then it resets at £17M
The amusing thing is people thinking there is some kind of coordination or special thought given to the number published. Most of the time it's just some developer who when the site is first being created asks, "how many decimal places should I round it off to?" And so for the ones showing "1.72 billion", you know their rounding code sucks, because they just dropped the extra decimal place. It's not like some lottery executive is plotting and planning to put "1.72 billion" on their website because they think it's the most accurate.
The reason Lottery Post and USA Mega try to do things a certain way is because there is a great deal of thought as to what is the most accurate vs. friendly, etc. The state lotteries are for the most part just doing their jobs, and the web developer creating the website is not typically an industry person with an insight into what a lottery players thinks.
I'm really not trying to toot our own horn or anything. I'm just trying to reset your expectations, so you don't think there is some special thought processes or accuracy to it. 50 different lotteries will do things 50 different ways, because there is not a coordinated, standard way of doing things like this. And lots of times the person coding the website may not be a avid player, so perhaps not in tune with what you want to see or how you want to see it.
I want to see PB hit 3 billion and a 17 year old win it all lol
I want PB to be huge and for the 93 yr old winner to take the annuity.
PS:
Who let the inmates run asylum in here?
I find a lot of odd ducks on this board!
Long time lurker, first time poster. Good luck to all members playing. Gotta be in it to win it. Got my 3, so I can dream a little.
"Most in the press have rounded that number off to $1.73 billion. "
If it was a normal number 1.725 should get rounded up to 1.73 if that 3rd digit is a problem. In this case it's an advertisement, and even using the annuity that nobody's going to take they aren't planning on giving anybody 1.73 billion. I don't know about actual advertising, but the websites of a few states are calling it 1.72 billion. New Jersey's website lists it as 1.7 billion. Whether any of those lower numbers are the result of the developer's automatic code or not I have to assume that somebody who understands how advertising works in the private sector is involved.
"New jackpot is 1.748 for tonight, still showing same amount for cash tho. "
The worksheet on the TX website always shows sales to the nearest dollar, as if they had a crystal ball to help with the sales forecast. They apparently use that very precise estimate to calculate an Actual jackpot in addition to the advertised one.You might think they'd do a bit of rounding, but the first forecast and the new one are for sales of 106,710,227.5 and then 119,515,455 tickets. Most of the time the sales estimate uses an even dollar amount, but once in a while, as they did with the initial estimate for tonight's drawing they use an odd number even though it's a bit difficult to buy half a ticket.
"Which means on Saturday it will be #1 "
Not even close. It won't set a real record until they advertise an annuity of 2.275 billion, assuming interest rates don't change again. Based on recent sales it a seems wildly unlikely that rolling to Monday night would get us there. That makes next Wednesday the drawing that will set a record, if it rolls another 3 times. The chance of that is (very) roughly 1 in 4.
I am 17 and 7 months - thanks for the good wishes.
then what are you doing on a gambling forum?
Thought u had to be 18
but hey, if someone buys for you
congratulations
I think that this board can be much too serious and at times a little upper crust considering the subject matter.
That's why I try to instill a little humor and lightheartedness into the discussion.
Let's not forget the lottery is a form of entertainment.
PS: When/if I win tonite I'm gonna go all out and celebrate. Out goes the sirloin in comes the spam.
Hey, just stating the obvious but, seriously that stuff is lethal ... everything nowadays is mixed with fentanyl. Don't gamble your life away for a quick fix.
If you need help, I'm sure somebody on this board can point you in the right direction.
Don't be afraid to ask for help!
I see what you did there.
Good even numbers am gonna take a willlld guess n say
game over
Lol I swear you say that after every draw.
On 4 lines, I matched one Powerball. Since I played the Powerplay, I win $8. Better than nothing I guess.
Am 😂

Not to shabby. A win is a win.
I just went to the Dover Lottery site and nothing it's gonna go up to almost 2,000,000,000. I told y'all that it's gonna get hit Saturday
Whats the dover lottery site? Are you sure they don't jump the gun on it?
I'm glad to see the final for tonight was higher than projected.
If you mean dover as in Delaware ... they always do that after that nights drawing .... before it is known whether their is a winner or not.
I'm guessing that there is at least one winning ticket and a good chance two or maybe even three. And I'm guessing 23 second prize winners. How bout you .....what do you envision happened tonite?
They jump the gun
watchin them for long time
they advertise prospective next draw and will chng if won
Well I say every draw is a 🥇 but am no expert
haven't seen all evens in a while
Had the 40 and the 10................Nothing else to write home about....It has been quite the run....
BUT,on a positive note... On the way home tonight I actually saw the price of a gallon of gas @ $2.989 at our local 7-11 First time in several months
Calif again
3rd in a yr
I know they buy more tickets but thats getting old and prob a little why sales are down.
Yeah
People feel they're wasting their time
Ticket sold at Midway Market & Liquor in Frazier Park, California
California again.Edwin Castrol again. My God,I quit playing lotteries....
So now with it being over it will save me a few bucks. Think I'll sit out it out a month or so before playing again.
I don't know the person, personally, I do know someone that claims that they have a friend that knows this person. Strange enough, there is a pattern I am trying to figure it out. This girl has notes, waiting for her to get her tablet back, she wasn't able to load it up. so as soon as I see something i will let others know on this forum. sequence pattern not only the big games but others too.
Congrats to the winner/winners.
I am done with it all now. It's not rigged, but it sure as hell feels like it.
Plus MUSL refuses to raise the starting jackpot back to $40 million. Kind of a slap to the true player. The deal was $2.00 increase. bigger jackpots and bigger starting jackpots.
Time to put my money elsewhere. Done with scratch offs, slot machines, nudge/skill machines, jackpot games, and on line. I am not a young man anymore and I cannot absorb the losses like I used to. You can only work so much before you end up dead. This was my final wakeup call. Fortune does not favor the bold. It favors the residents of California and Florida.
California sells the most tickets and combined with Florida, NY, Georgia, and Texas, one of those states is more likely to sell the jackpot winner.
Well i guess it's sirloin still.
<snip>it, I've saved that spam for decades in hope of the day when I hit the big jackpot.
California again????
talk about rigged!
give me a break
California again wins the jackpot
getting sick of California always winning the jackpot
Wow, I almost purchased a ticket. I guess that makes me a winner. Saved 2 bucks.
not Georgia, it's the top 4 states with the highest populations win the most, especially with a game that has 292 million combinations.
Another Extremely high lottery built up by small states to only be won by one of the large states. WHO SAW THAT ONE COMING? Question is are you tired of funding Champagne wishes and caviar dreams for people in California, Florida, NY or Texas? You could keep putting money in the retirement coffers of big state citizens by playing the Big State Powerball or the Big State Mega Millions games with unattainable odds OR you could start saving and investing that money which overtime will yield more than mere colored paper slips for the shredder. You will actually be closer to real wealth by saving and investing in your own retirement and not for someone in one of the big states like California or Florida.
Well you will forget this message when the next big lottery comes around and continue to do the "you aren't going to win dance again"...cue the shredder. This is the matrix so go ahead and go to sleep and dream; you can't win if you don't blah blah blah!
a big ripoff California again 😡
