Lump-sum cash option worth $820.6 million
By Todd Northrop
In a historic run of drawings that produced the second-largest lottery jackpot in world history, two Powerball tickets sold in Missouri and Texas will split a grand prize worth nearly $2 billion.
Last night, after 41 consecutive drawings without a winner, the multi-state Powerball lottery game finally produced a winner on the 42nd try, resulting in two tickets sharing a jackpot worth $1.7874 billion in 30 payments over 29 years, or $820.6 million in cash all at once.
The jackpot run-up was not only historic for its size, but for the number of drawings it took to produce a winner. At 41 rollovers, there has never been a longer string of consecutive Powerball drawings without a winner. The previous record was 40 rollovers, which occurred three times in the past.
After all the proceeds from ticket sales were counted, the final tally landed Saturday's jackpot ranked as the second-largest ever in world history, and the 4th-largest cash value of any jackpot in history. (The full top-25 list of annuity and cash values can be found below.)
It is the 32nd time the Powerball jackpot has been won in Missouri, trailing Indiana's 39 for most wins by a state. It is the 3rd time Texas sold the Powerball jackpot.
The Texas winning ticket was sold at Big's 103 gas station in Fredericksburg, a rural city in central Texas, 75 miles west of Austin.
The Missouri Lottery has not yet revealed the location of the winning ticket in the state. In a release, the Lottery stated, "The selling location of Missouri's jackpot-winning ticket will be announced within 72 hours of the drawing, in accordance with Missouri Lottery procedure."
One of the best things about winning the lottery in Texas is that there is no state tax on lottery prizes, with only federal taxes to pay. The Missouri winner will take home a bit less, as they will pay a state tax of 4.7% on top of the federal taxes due.
Both states allow big lottery winners to remain anonymous, so we will likely never learn the identities of the winners. Lottery Post maintains a state-by-state guide to anonymity laws across the USA and some other nations.
For such a large prize, winners are encouraged to build a solid financial and legal team before claiming the prize. Hopefully they follow Lottery Post's guide for lottery winners for this advice and lots of other helpful tips for big lottery winners.
The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, September 6, 2025, were 11, 23, 44, 61, and 62, with Powerball number 17. The Power Play number was 2.
The Saturday Double Play drawing results were 21, 29, 34, 41, and 65, with Powerball number 17. Double Play is a game option currently available in 22 states plus Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for an extra $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.
Aside from the two big winners, there were hundreds of other significant winners in the drawing.
20 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from California, 1 from Colorado, 1 from Florida, 2 from Illinois, 2 from Kansas, 1 from Massachusetts, 1 from Michigan, 1 from New Jersey, 2 from New York, 2 from Ohio, 1 from Oregon, 3 from Texas, and 1 from West Virginia. (The California winners each will claim a prize of $1,564,348, due to the state's pari-mutuel payout formula.)
Out of all the second-prize tickets, only two tickets sold in Kansas and Texas were purchased with the Power Play option, doubling their prizes to $2 million.
When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multiplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.
The official drawing videos can also be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega.
The Power Play option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.
Also, a total of 322 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize. Of those tickets, 90 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 33 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing is $24,271.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Monday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time with the jackpot amount reset to its starting point of $20 million.
Powerball is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

It was a great run and I am glad I got to participate. Kudos to the 2 jackpot winners and hopefully some of the LP family were involved in the 2nd place prize plethora.
Good luck to all on your next lottery purchase.
That was fun, on to the next.
Congrats Texas and Missouri and all the million dollar winners.
This was fun congrats to the winners 😄
Yea nice to see 2 different states and conspiracy theorist should be satisfied now: it's all abt the number
Texas was not a quick pick
well the great PB frenzy is over
$incere Congrats to the pair of lucky buzzards !!
lets get back on the road again to the next big frenzy
i havent seen a huge jackpot won in ohio yet.
if mega million jump that high, i wont buy a 5 dollar ticket
Powerball has been won in Ohio 5 times. Mega Millions has been won 19 times in the state, including its latest win on April 18, 2025.
A few more rollovers and Megamillions will be in frenzy territory. Buckle up
CONGRATULATIONS to the lucky winner($)!!! The jackpot-winning ticket in Texas was sold at a convenience store off Highway 290 in Fredericksburg.
l won only $8 on Powerball 17 . But am not too worried l believe Mega Millions is the only Voyage that once the frenzy starts can grow to $4,500,000,000 🙏🤠🍕🍕❤️❤️✈️✈️💃🏃♂️😝🍀😎.
This is what makes Mega millions Dangerous it may look slow at moment but once it picks up speed at $1,000,000,000 it will grow twice as fast as powerball and people will be Shocked by the Speed zoom 🏎️
To Buy fifty percent of Powerball possibilities cost $300,000,000 but to buy fifty percent of mega millions possibilities will cost $750,000,000 that is going to be the key to get to $5,000,000,000 Jackpot before 2025 Christmas 🎅 Eve
At $5,000,000,000 My minimum first Annuity payment is $50,000,000 nothing more nothing less after Tax lol 🙏🤠😎
* Here's hoping the winner from TX is RCB. 🤛👊🤜
Congrats! See you when the MM hits 1 billion+. Can anyone work out the math—how many tickets that would be and what percentage of the possible numbers MM would reach with $500,000,000 in sales?
spoke to him earlier and he mentioned that the winning TX was purchased in Fredericksburg Texas
Congratulations
TX Winner
MO Winner
This is interesting....
It will be 30 more draws on MM before Christmas 2025...
(Right now it is at 19 draws with est. $358M)
Now I am curious to see how many draws it will take for a new record.
It's been fun with the frenzy & high PB jackpot. For me i'm just gonna play CA SuperLotto until that gets hit and see where things are after that.
Mega Millions does not command my lottery investing monies simply because of the price point. Have not played since it changed.
Just remember folks ..... It's a lot less expensive to buy prepare and eat an liverwurst or OLIVELOAF sandwich than it is to purchase a megamillion ticket. And at least you have a full stomach as opposed to an empty wallet.
P.S.: ......
P.U.!!!
Who did it?
Was it you?
Or maybe it was you?
Fess up!!!
why does the missouri lottery have to wait 72 hours? is it a privacy law they have? to give the winner 72 hours to get out of dodge before nosy people start sniffing around trying to find out who the winner is?
Right now the $164.5 million cash value of MM is 45.95% of the $358 million annuity. With the annuity at 35.8% of 1 billion the cash value at the same interest rate has to be $164.5 / .358 for a $1 billion annuity. That's $459.5 million.
Flipping it around, it will take a hair under 2.8 times as much money for 1 billion as for 358 million. Total sales through Saturday are forecast to be $609,162,600 and 121,832,520 tickets. 2.8 time that is 340,314,302 tickets (and total revenue of just over $1.7 billion), but we only need the additional 1.8 times to add to sales to this point, or 218,481,782 tickets.
For that many tickets there's a hair over a 47.2% chance of not producing a winner, which would let it roll past $1 billion / $459.5 million. To just get there we only need to get to the previous jackpot without rolling. The PB run went from roughly 850 to 1 billion, but I doubt MM will sell as many tickets at that point, so I'm going to guess we need to reach $925 million, and a roll would reach $1 billion. To get to $925 million requires 192,958,209 tickets. The chance of doing that without a winner is 51.61%.
Bottom line is that we'll probably (by a small margin) see MM advertising a $1 billion annuity. I'll guess that we need perhaps 16 to 18 drawings to do it, which gets us a week or two into November. If it keeps rolling it could potentially get past 2 billion by Thanksgiving. That's a total of about 559 million more tickets. Guessing again at where it would have to roll to reach 2 billion I'll figure it needs to roll to 1.8 billion. That's another 491 million tickets without a winner, so right now the chance of something pretty close to $2 billion is 18.45%.
As for how many combinations are sold at each point, jumps from 925 to 1 billion and 1.8 to 2 billion would require about 25.5 and 68 million tickets. That would use about 8.4 and 20.9% of possible combinations. If it gets there each drawing would have a good chance of rolling again, and if there's a winner it's most likely to be a single winner (about 95 and 88% chance).
IMHO, the best thing about the new MM format is that for any given jackpot ticket volume is likely to be lower than we'd have for PB, so the chance of being the only winner is higher. The higher prize value per ticket also means that the chance of getting well past $2 billion is better than the chance that brought PB almost to $2 billion.
I was in a no tax state today that lets players stay anonymous so I bought a single line for MM for 10 draws which is as far out as they sell them and got the 10x multiplier. I'm marking that in the good luck column.
The people always whining about California always winning are awfully quiet!
Congratulations to the wealthy winners! I hope they will collect anonymously!!
It wasn't won in California so why would anyone be talking about California?
im glad it was won where all the flooding in Texas was, hopefully it's someone local to that area.
That's a good lucky start for your lottery hopes.
Congrats!
If only the powerplay last night was five instead of two I could have recovered two thirds of the $$$ I spent. Oh well , better luck next time???
No MM $5 ticket purchase for me until it reaches $1 billion.
Because I always hear people complaining of "only California winners" when there's jackpot anticipation.
No MM for you, one year! Next!
* l raised this very issue with a member & my post was greeted with venom. Supposedly CA is a sucker State to some. Our only purpose is to pour millions into every jackpot but once the balls start spinning, CA lottery players need to get lost. 🤨
I welcome with open arms all PB loyalist to the MM tent ⛺
Onward we go, I got my one PB ticket for Monday.
Who said 20M is loose change 😁
