After the Big Win

Lottery millionaire resorts to home burglary for a fraction of his fortune

By Kate Northrop

LEXINGTON, Ky. — $167.3 million Powerball jackpot winner Shannon James Farthing was arrested a third time since his lottery win, this time on burglary charges that involved stealing $12,000 from someone's home — a fraction of his fortune.

The Kentucky lottery winner who scooped a $167 million Powerball jackpot last year has been arrested for the third time since his win.

Arrest documents filed by the Lexington Police Department say that the 51-year-old was captured on security cameras allegedly entering a residence through a side door on Kenesaw Drive in Lexington at 7:16 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.

The owner of the home saw Farthing entering the building on her camera feed and heard a "loud noise" that sounded as if the door had been "busted open." She later reported to police that $12,000 had been stolen from where she had stored it in her back bedroom.

The arrest record goes on to say that he left the property in a black Porsche before police were able to find him at the scene. At around 9:00 p.m., they located the suspect vehicle in the Red Mile Gaming parking lot and found him inside the casino, about a 20-minute drive from where the burglary took place.

Authorities arrested Farthing "without incident" and additionally found marijuana and marijuana blunts in the ashtray upon conducting a search of his vehicle. He was charged with one count of Burglary in the 2nd Degree and one charge of Possession of Marijuana.

Court records show that Farthing's mother posted bond for him on Sunday, and he appeared in court on Monday with his attorney, telling reporters on-site that he had "no comment."

Earlier this month, Farthing pleaded guilty to a case involving punching a Florida beach resort customer and kicking an officer in the face in the days following his prize claim. The plea was part of a deal that required him to pay $1,000 in fines to spare him additional jail time, WKYT said.

He also has a court visit scheduled for his second arrest on April 2, which relates to a separate incident in which he allegedly intimidated a woman after pressuring her to take "a gummy." He has other active cases, including a hit-and-run charge.

His next court date for the most recent slew of charges is set for April 27.

i'd like tucker black to calculate the probability that this guy invested any part of his f.u. money to make it last a while, and the probability that he even has $1 million of it left. i believe both numbers are hovering close to zero.

This guy has a death wish.  Incredibly sad!

Maybe they should also investigate the Powerball win.  You know he cheated.

I refuse to believe Eddie Tipton is the only lottery cheat out there.

I knew this redneck was gonna be a constant source of entertainment when he showed up in my backyard (St Pete Beach) 2 days after winning and assaulted a police officer. Kate, maybe you should see if he'll hire you to write his memoirs ala Abraham Shakespeare- he deserves to be under the slab of a house. Gotta get his first name right first though...it's Shannon.

jj, So many times you've told us how easy plot is to win that it's surprising you're saying he cheated.

Didn't watch it. I did however watch a documentary about Chief Red Cloud. He made some famous quotes about criminals.

Well, well, well, it's said that money amplifies character.

The guy is just being who he's always been, only difference is this time he ain't broke 😁

If I win the Wednesday jackpot, cops, media, and drama would be on very different lanes 🤣🤣

I believe that most people with money have no character.

Just look at how the rich are messing up the world today!

Even during the Roman Empire, the rich were throwing people to the lions!

Most people with money never had character in the first place.

If I want to look for character, i'll look among the humble, the ascetics, and the churches.

Rarely will you find wealth and character in the same place.

You  got 🍀 and won $167 Mill in the PB and you're gonna break into someone's house to steal $12,000?

🤦‍♂️  🤦‍♂️

And your getaway car is a black Porsche. Yeah, that shouldn't be too hard to spot. 🚔

Some places, you break into someone's house you get turned into 🧀  🔫

Sounds like you got lucky twice.

And yes, you DID pass the audition for an episode of World's Dumbest Criminals. 👏 👏

ShagE3

Id venture to guess that Shannon Farthing neglected to prepare and consume a liverwurst sandwich on ...... with wxy and z and one side of sweet potato chips and another of three gherkin pickles before his latest stupid criminal escapade.

And surely he wouldn't have done it had he had a creme soda or sasparilla or birch beer  or moxie ...... but he sure had a lot of moxie to act out on his malevolent urges

P.U.: What stinx in here?!

Have a shaggy day!

ShagE3

Megamillions - free until jackpot reaches 350- 500 mil

Powerball-free till jp reaches 250 mil.

G'day

Lotterologist, Odd for you to say that about people with money while posting on a site where people are trying to figure out how to win a lottery and win millions or multi millions. Re: character, some sage said it is the way you treat other people that you know that they can't do a thing for you.

Hope he don't be another lottery statistic. He needs to chill and go enjoy his money

Bleudog101

What is it about Lexington and Ashland KY winners?    The latter being David Edwards.   All those millions wasted and living in squalor in a storage shed?   Oh the local media showed him on the news conference saying he promised to God he has changed his ways.   Sadly he did not.

Haven't come to a conclusion on this joker yet.

Congrats!

I understand why winning an enormous amount of money won't stop you from abusing drugs or getting into fights because simply having money doesn't solve the underlying problems.

Stealing what is now a trivial amount of money, OTOH, makes zero sense. This would be much easier to understand if he and the victim have some kind of past connection and simply getting a few bucks wasn't the actual motive.

It is not it surprising that he felt entitled to money that someone else had, regardless of his own wealth or drug or other issues. Grifters gotta grift. If someone resents you for what you have or own, common sense flies out the window.
